The Glass Scientists Podcast - Chapter One

The Glass Scientists Podcast - Chapter One

Project Overview

Hello! I'm making an audio adaptation of Sabrina Cotugno's webcomic, The Glass Scientists. Before reading further, I suggest you read at least the first chapter to get the gist. There is profanity in this webcomic, reader discretion is advised.

The Glass Scientists an ongoing "Gaslamp Fantasy" webcomic about mad science, magical secrets, and monsters both within and without. It has a short stand-alone prequel, Bleeding Heart. The writer and artist is Sabrina Cotugno AKA Arythusa, who previously worked on Gravity Falls and currently works as a storyboard artist for Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

Synopsis:

The city of London is not the best place to be a mad scientist. Thirty years after the death of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein, its citizens have gotten awfully good at killing creatures, destroying laboratories, and generally wrecking anything new or strange-looking. Soon, every scientist within city limits will find themselves behind bars, unless someone can turn their luck around, and fast.
This someone, it turns out, is a respected gentleman, an illustrious socialite– who also happens to be a scientist himself. He believes that rogue science can survive — and thrive! — as he has, if only they could improve their reputation in the public eye – and he plans to give them one hell of an image makeover. Together with his Society for Arcane Science, he can end the reign of fear and superstition that has held London captive for decades so long as no one discovers his one little secret, a secret that could ruin him and unravel the lives of everyone he knows.
This man’s name is Dr. Henry Jekyll.

I'm currently calling for characters in Chapter One, so please don't audition for characters such as Lanyon and Rachael yet! I've already made the script for Chapter One, with help from Sabrina. Bear in mind some lines have been changed for each character; adaptation and whatnot. She's also helped me with character personality, etc. Also, since there aren't any female characters in this Chapter, all characters are available to audition regardless of your gender! And if you don't get any of the roles, never fear! You'll be asked to be a voice in the London Mob that chases Jasper into the alleyway, so you can still be part of the chapter!

This casting call isn't just for this website, and I'm not going to be posting the selected actors here. Selected voice actors will be posted on MAY 27TH on https://disqus.com/home/channel/theroleplayingscientists/ . Selected voice actors on this website will recieve the script and a deadline to send the voice lines.

Chapter One will be released on Souncloud hopefully later this year, which will be linked to on the Disqus forum. If you have any other questions, go this link: https://disqus.com/home/discussion/channel-theroleplayingscientists/the_glass_scientists_podcast_chapter_1_auditions/ and see if your question has already been answered. If not then you can message me. If you have been chosen for a main role, you must remain in contact. If you've been cast a minor role, such as Jenkins and Wipple, that role will not be used again, but can voice a minor or main character in later Chapters.

MINOR ROLE:

A loyal yet impartial constable underling of Brokenshire, Wipple is a competent officer but is practically lighthearted.

Voice Range: Lighthearted cockney accent.

(ONLY APPEARS IN THIS CHAPTER)

  • "Did you take a wrong turn at Buckingham Palace?"

  • "Watch yourself, sir! Don’t come any closer!"

  • "My god, another monster!"

Role assigned to: mimicker

MINOR ROLE

The no-nonsense Police Sergeant who attempts to arrest Jasper in Chapter One. Brokenshire is brooding and confident, yet has a soft spot for small puppies. He holds high regard for Dr. Jekyll, but almost no regard for what he calls "mad-scientist types".

Voice Range: Typical gruff cockney accent.

(REAPPEARS IN CHAPTER FIVE)

  • "Let me guess: lofty schemes, grand experiments, the best intentions gone awry? Hmph! There’s only one place for you mad scientist types: bedlam!"

  • "W- Well that may be! But our precinct hasn’t got the time, nor the funding, to give special treatment to any man or beast. It’s got to be locked up, or it’s a menace to the general public."

  • "Don’t thank us just yet! I’ll be back for an inspection soon enough! Right, everyone, clear off!"

MAIN ROLE:

Dr. Jekyll's alter ego, caused by a mysterious green potion. Almost everything Jekyll isn't: rude, assertive, mischievous, sinister and prominently in the darker side of ambition; though he still has a passion for "rogue science". He narrates the first couple of minutes of the Chapter, observing the rampant werewolf Jasper running amok the London streets.  "The Spirit of London at Night" pretty much sums him up.

Voice Range: Has the same accent as Jekyll but often adopts a kind of East London accent in order to blend in with his surroundings - he wants to be perceived as a native of the London underworld, not some rich boy slumming his way through Whitechapel. He doesn’t have nearly as much practice with his new accent as Jekyll with his Received Pronunciation, and he slips up from time to time.

  • "I am The Spirit of London at Night. I flicker with the will-o-wisp gas lamps, I float like a specter through the autumn fog. I whisper with a voice full of secrets and sharp tiny things, glinting silver, spilling red, winding through the cobblestone alleys of Shoreditch and Whitechapel and Providence Row."

  • "Take this beauty of a brute, for example. A werewolf, and a young, little one at that! Tonight, he will join the dreadful beasts who make up London’s midnight menagerie... "

  • "Ooh, look, that one’s wielding knitting needles! Innovation at its finest!"

MINOR ROLE:

A loyal and stern constable underling of Brokenshire, Jenkins is often susceptible to be ordered about by his superiors.

Voice Range: Typical gruff cockney accent.

(ONLY APPEARS IN THIS CHAPTER)

  • "You ‘eard the man! Move along!"

  • "Oi, you! What in hell do you think you’re doing? This is strictly police business!"

  • "Dreadful sorry about the shouting earlier, sir, we didn’t know it was you! What brings you this way of the world?"

Jasper Kaylock

MAIN ROLE:

A West-Country former farmhand turned "cryptozoologist", who has recently moved to London to meet with fellow people who practice rogue science. Jasper is a werewolf, after a botched wolfs-bane potion causes him to sporadically shift between wolf and man. He is taken in by Jekyll during the end of Chapter One. He is very keen with rogue science, but can often be overwhelmed with certain things (see Chapter Two for evidence).
Voice Range:
Speaks with a fairly heavy West Country accent, like a British farmer. He is audibly panicky when confronted with a dangerous situation, especially when it concerns the police.

  • "Stop! You don’t understand! The formula- Something went wrong when I tried to repeat my results! It made me unstable! You’ve got to stay away from me! I-"

  • "That’s strange... Suddenly the air smells like... peppermint?"

  • "It’s just... I don’t normally get into carriages with strange people. Not that you're strange! You’ve been fantastic, swooping in and saving me like that. But I mean... I don’t even know your name."

MAIN ROLE:

A prominent member of London's high-class society, but is preferably a "rogue scientist", a sort of toned-down mad scientist sort. He is the co-founder of the Society for Arcane Sciences, which houses fellow rogue scientists, along with his friend Robert Lanyon. He takes Jasper in after managing to convince Brokenshire to not arrest him.  Respectable to high-class people, but quaint and less eloquent to more casual people.
Voice Range: Native Glasgow accent but taught himself to speak standard Received Pronunciation (a.k.a. the most generic British accent). He can alter his accent to match his conversation partner (that is to say, he would speak more casually with Jasper than with a wealthy patron or impoverished Londoners).

  • "No, no, I would never dream to interfere with the work of the Metropolitan Police! I only thought to provide... consultation, where it was needed."

  • "Perhaps in fairy stories, Sergeant! But in truth, the werewolf is a most noble and intelligent creature who would never attack a human unless we threatened them first."

  • "That’s fine. We can stop by on the way. I hate to insist, but I doubt those officers will be too keen to find you loose on the streets. There’s also a reasonable chance the locals will try to burn you alive. After you, Mr. Kaylock."
