The D (Stands for Demon) [Otome/VN Partial Acting]

Project Overview

Note: Anyone who's auditioned via another methodology, you don't have to do it again. I'm sort of trying this to expand the user base.

Pixels and Pins Studio is a small digital atelier focused on the creation of narrative games and audio/visual productions. Previous projects include the audio drama Ollie and Molly and the visual novel Amaranth.

The D (Stands for Demon) is a comedic urban fantasy visual novel/otome about the exploits of Stella, an editor for a romance novel publisher, and Rose, the ancient otherworldly being that shares her body with her. It has an overall upbeat and cheerful tone, but speaks on the topics of sexuality, gender, self identity, xenophobia, and family drama with a light touch.

A free demo of the game is now available. The final game will be released as a "pay what you want" product upon completion.

The game will contain partial voice acting. The characters being cast below will be expected to perform 5 short lines of dialogue and 10-12 vocalizations that will be scattered through the game for mood.

Actors will be live directed via Skype, Discord, Google hangouts etc. when recording to make sure we nail that performance together!

GENERAL AUDITION LINE NOTES

The audition lines provided represent performance sensitive vocal barks for certain scenes in the game.

Line 1- An S-Rank, so to speak. The best possible outcome has been achieved for that scene.

Line 2- An F-rank. Our main character has failed miserably, poor dear.

Vocalizations: may include non-specific vocables (eg, the “I don’t know” sound  or 1-2 word phrases (eg. “Hi!” “huh?” “Oh snap!” What?!”) Requires a little improv for auditioning, but would be worked out between us in final recording.

Faakhir

cast offsite

Mid - late 20’s. Though Faakhir’s a man in both biology and self-identification, the males of his species tend to sound “womanly” to human ears. Tomboyish mid-low female voice, or super high male voice with a feminine edge. Slight growly quality.

Faakhir’s lines will be enhanced with post processing to increase the “dragony” aspect.

You don’t see many drakkaken wandering around. They’re a little hard to read what with the whole...dragon...thing, and Faakhir’s no different. Despite that, though, his kindness and shy nature comes through.

Good-natured and devout.

  • "I'm so glad my Path has crossed with yours."[An almost religious sentiment expressing awe that in the billions of people in existence and the billions of years of existence, he’s fortunate to live in the same time and place as her.]

  • “I'm...sorry...for any confusion on my part."[Embarrassed to think that he’s caused this disaster. Blaming himself for our main character’s failure to perform. ]

  • Provide the following as per your interpretation of the character:

    a greeting, a laugh, happy/amused, angry/upset, confused/surprised, embarrassed

[Faakhir’s non-verbals should sound very growly, animalistic, and in the back of the throat or nose. A crocodile would be a good point of inspiration [Reference] It’ll be dramatically enhanced with post processing, so it’s not important for audition purposes to get the perfect sound.]

Early 30’s. Bright and airy. Pitch and tonality is best described as androgynous or gender non-specific. The kind of voice that you’d hear come through your drive through and not know whether to say sir or ma’am when they get to your window.

Sylvan have the reputation of being capricious, aloof, and light-hearted. It’s not that Tarka isn’t those things, but they’re also industrious and highly intelligent. Despite a degree in biochemistry, no one took them seriously until they gave up on grad school and opened their own holistic medicine practice/store. Well, so be it! Money’s money and humans will eat this sort of thing up.

Flirty and feathery with an edge of sarcasm.

Language notes: The language Tarka uses is spoken with a soft, sing-song feeling. Perfect pronunciation isn’t expected, and please avail yourself of the provided pronunciation guide.

  • ”Sen olmak hava."

    Phonetic as written [reference]

    Translation: “You are air.’

[An extremely sincere and loving sentiment. Comparing the object of affection to something impossible to live without (ie air).]

  • "Some things weren't meant to be."

[Matter-of-fact. It is what it is.]

  • Provide the following as per your interpretation of the character:

    a greeting, a laugh, happy/amused, angry/upset, confused/surprised, embarrassed

Mid 30’s, mid-high pitched, but not effeminate

René’s kind of a jerk, but a lovable jerk...mostly. When it comes to rough romantic backgrounds, though he’s got a bit of a doozy. Beneath his prickliness is a man adrift who thinks he’ll never love or be loved again.

Smarmy, quick to cover real feelings with a thin veneer of sarcasm.

  • "Maybe there’s some hope for us, yet."

    [Excited but cautious.]

  • "Don't know why I thought you'd be different."

[Viscerally disappointed in you, himself, and the situation as a whole.]

  • Provide the following as per your interpretation of the character:

    a greeting, a laugh, happy/amused, angry/upset, confused/surprised, embarrassed

Late 20’s - early 30’s appearance (actual age early 40’s),  low-mid but not particularly bassy, smoker but not heavily

Iambe’s an elf living among humans and he’s annoyed by it on daily basis. Too bad a genetic defect means elven society as a whole hasn’t been very kind to him. A person could probably break through those walls he’s built up around him, but until then he just comes across as a little bit of a stuck up jerk.

Stoic, reserved, but not unkind

Language notes: The particular elven language Iambe uses is spoken with very sharp edges, but the words still tend to flow together. Perfect pronunciation isn’t expected, and please avail yourself of the provided pronunciation guide.

  • "Well, that's certainly interesting."[Huh. Who would’ve thought that humans were actually good for something.]

  • "Oi ánthropoi gínontai cheiróteroi."

Pronunciation: Ee anthropee yeenotee heeOteree [reference]

Rough translation: “Humans are even worse.”

    [Utterly disgusted. See language notes.]

Voice and character description

Mid 20’s, mid-high, painfully average protagonist type.

A programmer by trade, Chris also happens to be a vampire of some sort. Not the blood drinking type, though...probably….Not like he needs to keep it a secret, but it is a rather curious thing. Makes a person wonder whether he’s trying to look like something he’s not.

Convivial if a little awkward sometimes.

  • "I've never felt so..normal...before."[Filled with a general sense of amazement. He can’t believe that he’s so lucky to have found the main character.]

  • "Well this is...uh...awkward."[It’s not that he WANTS to make things weird...but...well...they’ve kinda already gone that way.]

  • Provide the following as per your interpretation of the character:

    a greeting, a laugh, happy/amused, angry/upset, confused/surprised, embarrassed

Chia-hao Woo

cast offsite

Early - Mid 30’s. Low and manly. Bassy. “Chocolaty”

Chia-hao is that guy who explains the different kinds of coffee beans to the barista. Who goes out of his way to (poorly) explain to you the themes and metaphorical elements of the book you did your doctorate dissertation on because he sees you with a copy of it. He’s the Guy in your MFA Twitter account incarnate. He’s also the type of guy, though, that will lend you his entire David Bowie collection because you said you liked the movie Labyrinth. So he’s not malicious. He just needs a little...perspective.

Confident and warm.

  • "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"

[He has no idea how to actually read and recite poetry. He thinks he does, though.]

  • “I..uh...it's not you. It's me.”

[He doesn’t actually believe this, but that’s what you’re supposed to say when things aren’t going great, right?]

  • Provide the following as per your interpretation of the character:

    a greeting, a laugh, happy/amused, angry/upset, confused/surprised, embarrassed
