Teal - An Audio Play

Teal - An Audio Play

Project Overview

Teal

[This is an audio-play about a man and an AI. After a company develops a new home device intended to assist in day-to-day living, Steve finds himself in possession of one through a friend gifting him it for his 35th birthday. Reserved at first, Steve eventually finds himself opening up to the device; going so far as to name it "Teal".

However, Steve has a dark past. And with every waking moment, Steve's days become an even darker shade of grey. As Teal continues to learn and grow, she soon is able to understand the gravity of Steve's inner-turmoil.]

Teal is intended to be an episodic audio-play with three planned episodes so far. It is still up for debate whether or not there will be a fourth. In terms of payment, I intend to pay the hired actors $10 each at the end of each episode made. The method of payment is up for discussion and I am very open to negotiate the way an actor wishes to be paid.

This is a project that requires two "main" voices. In future, there will be the potential of including guest voices but throughout the series there will mainly be two voices.

Planning for the episodes and sharing of scripts will be done through a Discord server that I will have setup for all cast and crew members to join, so please have the app and an account ready if you're hired.

I look forward to hearing your submissions :)

Trigger warning: this series will have themes that may be confronting such as death, depression, self-harm and suicide.

  • And that's the auditions!

Thank you very much for your participation everyone! I look forward to working with the two awesome voice actors I've chosen. I hope you who are interested stick with us and follow along for the journey. The first episode should be out in a few months. Give it a listen when you can :)
  • Male Role Cast!

After very careful consideration and countless hours of stressful decision making, I've finally found who I believe to be the best voice for Steve. Everyone was seriously wonderful and it was truly a difficult task to pick the right voice. But I'm confident that my choice was the right one. Thank you to all the awesome male voices that offered up their services for this project. I'm forever grateful for your efforts. I now look towards the female talent as I face the next close-to-impossible task of choosing the perfect voice for Teal. Wish me luck. - Jon
  • Nearing the deadline - A few notes.

It's been a fantastic casting call run and I've got to admit that I wasn't expecting the response that I've gotten. I cannot thank you all enough for the effort you've put in to auditioning. That being said, I've managed to narrow it all down (PHEW!) to a select few. Despite the arduous task of picking out the perfect two, I just wanted to point out a few things that I hope everyone understands. Just so everyone is clear on what exactly this whole thing is. It's my intention, with this project, to highlight the dangers of self isolation and portray what mental illness can actually look like. At least, what it *can* look like. The themes in this script are - what I believe to be - extremely confronting. If you're experiencing any sort of depression or anxiety, please be warned that this project will be exploring these afflictions to their core. Beyond the two main protagonists in this particular run, there may be space for a few other individuals to join the team. I know that I'll be looking for a few extra hands to help on the production side. If so, I hope you can come along on this particular journey as we attempt to shed light on an issue that so many of us experience on a day-to-day basis and create something that we can relate to. Much love, - Jon (Cosiere)
  • Thank you all!

Thank you everyone for your wonderful submissions! Know that I am listening to every single one of them and giving them each careful thought and consideration. As the deadline nears, I'm working diligently on my end to provide a worthy script and storyline that'll be ready when you start :)

A 32 year old man who is gentle-spoken and extremely calm more often than not. When referring to "Her" he is speaking about his daughter who passed away a year ago. He battles with a lot of inner turmoil and hatred poised towards himself. For his performance, I require an aged voice with a certain natural rasp. A voice that sounds as if it has the potential to be mean and brash but instead chooses to be collected and paced.

Steve is the protagonist in our story. The plot revolves around him and therefore he'll be the most prominent voice in the episodes.

This means that he'll be driving the story forward and carrying the emotion in whatever way the script demands. He'll have to have a voice full of depth and will require a diverse range of acting. You must be able to convey such things as sadness and joy effortlessly and even be able to handle the hints and subtleties that are sprinkled throughout the plot. It is absolutely imperative that the quality of your voice and equipment are at the best that you can handle.

  • "I'm not too sure... everything I've ever done was for her. I breathed for her. I don't feel like... like I could ever be anything except what I was for her. I don't know what I am without her."

  • "Hi... It's nice to meet you. I... -chuckle- I'm sorry, this is all just... I don't really know what I'm doing right now. I guess I should start by introducing myself. I'm... I'm... - sigh - forget it."

  • - choking back on tears -" I just can't do it anymore. I hate it. I hate everything I've become. I don't want to be this... this... pathetic, good for nothing, hopeless waste of space. I'm... I'm just done with it all."

Teal is an android. A voice in a computer. Designed to learn and interact with humans. Not unlike the google pixel. However, this AI learns from the ground up. Instead of having a readily available understanding of language and communication, Teal must learn through whomever teaches her.  This design was intended to truly personalize the AI's way of "thinking" and communicating. Thus the performance would require a voice that can convey her initial monotone way of speaking. However there'll be areas in the script where she'll have a random spark of emotion, albeit subtle. Eventually she'll reach a point where she is able to accurately mimic the "human" way of speaking.

Teal - although listed as a support character - is just as important to the plot as Steve. She is the one who guides him. Leads him to certain places in the story. Her inquisitive nature is what drives Steve to explore different emotions and attempts at self exploration.

This means that Teal is held at just as high of a standard as Steve. She will need a strong performance by an individual able to meet the demands of the story. It is imperative that the quality of your voice and equipment are at the best they can be.

  • "I do not understand. What does it mean to be broken? You are not an object."

  • "A belief is an ideology that one has no wavering certainty of. One will not doubt something that they truly 'believe' in."

  • "I have learned a lot in your care. I've even learned a few lame jokes. But, for the life of me, I could never understand why you - the person teaching me - have never been capable of forgiving yourself."
