Project Overview

This Project is a short/Animatic for my masters degree in animation. so a student film pretty much.

the final product I'm aiming for a 1 minute- 1:30 film, as its not going to be a fully animated film.

its a standalone short.

the project deadline is early next year, but there is a lot of written work to go woth this film, and so i need the film done by after Xmass-ish (vage i know but i don't have an exsact date ATM)

with this in mind, time is a factor and soon speed is important.

the short is a "fantasie/Sci-fi" with one main character, one two secondary characters, one off screen the other cant talk.
its a basic point A to B narrative.

Maria (main character) is the captain of a company of rangers that are set out in the untamed wilderness of the new world, far from the safety of the city walls the call home. there job, to keep the lands out side of the city safe and clear of all threats, men, animal, machine or worse. and to guide any refugees they find to the safety of the city of "Bastion".  

Maria while out on patrol alone and far from Ranger camp Alpha, comes across a small child 7-8 and is forced to take respancablity for her new found ward, stepping up and  takeing action rather then putting her responsibility on others and indulging her need for adventure.  Maria is the only hope this lost child (mute) has of staying alive this far out in the wilderness, and the only defence against the dark forces and monsters that inhabit these lands.  Marias journey to get this child back to the safety of Bastion and to keep her alive and safe from the creatures that stalk her,will push Maria into a new and uncomfortable role.
changing her for the better.

Maria is the unwilling learder of band of rangers set to protect the borders of the city of bastion. 
shes a young adult, adventures and curies, she often dumps her role and responsablity on others inorder to indulgue her self intrests. shes sarcastic and little stand off-ish to thoughs she dosent know. and has no idea how to interact with younger people (her closeist freind often saying she'd make a terrible mother) but at heart shes a good person, if alittle selfindulgent.
but due to the actions of the story shes eventuly forced into a new more responsible role and becomes more human, and warm, being forced to look after a young child that cant speek, forces her to grow and addapt as the story gose on.

  • (peace and quite broken by maria's radio, with a voice calling her)  (Maria) “sigh”
    “what is it?"  

  • (Maria) (playfully but slighty irrotated)        “I wanted a walk!. Besides that sector has been clear for weeks now, fort I’d
    do more good potroling somewhere more active”.

    (really irroated now, being lectured) (Maria)       “Don’t start this agin please Sargent”.


  • (Relieved)  (Maria)       “Good call on that one”   

    (Maria)         “on my way, I’ll be back before nightfall”

Adam is Maria's best friend and second in command, hes older around 27-29ish and is always the one to cover her is boss, playing the role of "acting ranger lead" due to Maria's tendency to explore and go off on her own with out warning.

Adam is more serious, but is kind natured, lecturing one moment, then joking the next. although he tends the lecture Maria more and more of late.

    by raido static followed by a male voice.)

    (Adam) “Boss?
    Hey Boss!...I know your there, you’re the only one who uses this frequance”.

  • (Adam)
    “where are you? You were supposed to be back here hours ago, your patrol's
    ended awhile back. Your relief team radioed in saying they couldn’t find you at
    your post!


    (Adam)
    “why am I not surprised.” “Maria! You can’t keep doing this, If you disobey and
    don’t follow rules, what’s stopping the others from doing the same!” “your
    Ranger lead, your supposed to set an example to the others, not going about
    doing whatever you please, you have responsibility’s”



  • (Adam)
    “you never answered my question Maria, where are you?”. “on second thought,
    don’t bother, I’m not going to like your answer I can already tell”

    (Adam) “just get back here, we got more work to do out here.
