Stripes - A Native American Folktale
Project Overview
Hello, I'm Jess, and I'm trying to create a visual short story based on a Native American Folklore tale for a final exam for my senior project! The deadline is tight so instead of sample lines, I'm putting the entire script here in the description. It's very short but I'd really appreciate it if I could get some voices for my final project!
Characters:
Narrator: Can be male or female, any type of voice, as long as you can enunciate and speak clearly. Must be able to exaggerate some parts and be able to really portray the story for what it is!
Bear: A deep, gruff, broad, bold, male voice! Must be able to be intimidating and angry as well as proud and loud!
Chipmunk: A cutesy, female voice. Preferably of a higher pitch or younger sounding. Must be able to chant, or "sing" (not any actual musical talent is required, as long as you can "sing" happy birthday then you're fine for this part) Can be a nasally voice.

Scene 1
Narrator
Long ago, Chipmunks had soft, earth-coloured fur, but no stripes. One morning a Chipmunk was storing food in her burrow for winter. She was collecting berries when suddenly, a bear started coming her way, flipping over fallen logs to find food.
Bear
I’m the strongest animal in the woods! No one can mess with me! (various grunting noises) Look at me! I can do anything!
Chipmunk
Is that so? Are you really the strongest animal in the woods?
Bear
Yes, it’s true! All you other animals are afraid of me!
Chipmunk
Well, if it really is true, then can you stop the sun from rising in the morning?
Narrator
Bear was curious of this challenge, and looked at Chipmunk with determined eyes, quickly, he replied.
Bear
I haven’t tried to stop the sun from rising in the morning yet, but I’m sure I can do it. Tomorrow morning, the sun will not rise. [boasting] Not against my strength!
Narrator
He lay down facing east and made himself comfortable in the grass and leaves.
Chipmunk scurried back into her burrow, laughing to herself about how wrong Bear was.
Scene 2
Narrator
Bear sat there all night without sleeping. Then birds began to sing and light glowed in the east.
Bear stood on his hind legs and raised his front paws towards the light.
Bear
The sun will not rise today.
Narrator
Chipmunk came out of her burrow to watch as Bear raised his hands as high as he could. As the sun raised over him, Chipmunk started to laugh.
Chipmunk
Bear said he was the strongest, but the sun is stronger than Bear! (singing, gleefully) The sun came up, the sun came up! Bear is angry, the sun came up!
Narrator
Bear was not pleased with chipmunk’s taunting, and got so furious, that started to chase after her. Not before long, Bear had chipmunk trapped under his massive paw.
Chipmunk
(scared, could be stuttering) Bear, I’m sorry I made fun of you, please let me go!
Bear
(Intimidating, angry) Tell me I’m the strongest animal in the woods and I’ll let you go.
Chipmunk
Bear you are the strongest, now please lift your paw, it’s so heavy it’s crushing me!
Narrator
Bear lifted his paw ever so slightly to allow Chipmunk to escape. Chipmunk wriggled free in order to escape. Upon this, Bear swung his paw at her and missed, but his long claws scratched her head and along her back, as she ran off. These scratches eventually transformed into white scars. They remind us what can happen if one animal makes fun of another. And that is how Chipmunk got her stripes.
IMPROV IS GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE EMAIL ME!
(I'm also very picky about mic quality please have a good mic!)
