Star Wars: Mistress Red (Audiobook)

Star Wars: Mistress Red (Audiobook)

Project Overview

Mistress Red is an audiobook novella project that follows the adventures of the intrepid, Imperial historian Arthur Prowse, as he journeys to the dead and dusty world of Moraband in search of the tomb of an ancient Sith Lord, hoping the secrets within could save his Empire from certain death. Eager on his quest to see the Empire renewed to its former glory, little does Prowse know that a renegade archaeologist from the illusive Chiss Ascendancy is eyeing the same prize - an encounter that could change Arthur's destiny in unthinkable ways....

I. Introduction to the Mistress Red Project

This is a casting call for the project entitled Star Wars: Mistress Red, an audiobook that will be freely available on YouTube and Spotify. The estimated runtime for this audiobook is 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Mistress Red is an audiobook and novella set in the Star Wars universe, and an adaptation of the visual novel series Legends of the Galaxy, produced by my dearest friend, Matthew Fletcher. The first book of a trilogy to come, Mistress Red follows the adventures of daring archaeologist Arthur Prowse, as he embarks on a perilous journey to the dead and dusty world of Moraband in a bid to save the Empire he serves from certain death. Seldom does he contemplate the tragic implications of his loyalty to an empty throne.

When news of the Emperor’s death rocks the Imperial capital of Coruscant, Arthur Prowse and his faithful compatriot William I’Oner are dispatched by the Emperor’s sinister agents to the depths of Moraband, ancient birthplace of the Sith, in a desperate bid to recover an artefact destined to change the fate of the Empire forever - the blood of a Sith Lord long dead. Under the shadow of the Emperor’s starship Eclipse, Prowse teams up with a contemptuous rival to discover the secrets of the dead Sith Lord, blissfully unaware of the consequences for the galaxy, and themselves.

Initially conceived as a one-shot, sci-fi action adventure novella akin to the Indiana Jones films, plans for a trilogy grew exponentially with Gothic, tragic implications for the characters. Mistress Red, therefore, is the first act of a cautionary tale about misplaced loyalty, betrayal and forgiveness, and the consequences of unearthing the past to change the future, riddled with drama, action, adventure, emotional intensity, and that lingering sense of sickening dread old Gothic stories have which I love so dearly. Should a trilogy prove infeasible, however, Mistress Red is capable of standing alone as a gripping tale from start to finish.

It is my pleasure, thus, to welcome you to the project. Your consideration and time is greatly appreciated beyond that which words can express.

II. Auditions

Mistress Red is an audiobook requiring a full cast of voice actors and a narrator to breathe vividity into both dialogue and prose.

As is the case with all productions, a high standard of audio quality is expected. Clean recordings to the best of your ability, (devoid of peaking, popping, wind and ambient noise, for example) of a suitable volume and in mono are encouraged. All recordings should be in a .wav format.

Auditionees are free to submit their favourite takes, or multiple takes for each character they audition for - as many as they wish. Flexibility in vision and direction for the characters is more than welcome. While I do have a general understanding for what it is I am looking for in each character, artistic liberties and open interpretation are respected and incredibly desirable.

The deadline for all auditions is March 11th, 2021, at 1300 hours, after which no further auditions will be considered, roles will be cast, and relevant documentation disseminated.

In the event that you submit an audition, in the interests of maintaining reflexivity, I will not be able to contact you regarding your audition, nor comment on it on the basis of quality, casting, etc., until after the aforementioned deadline. Any other enquiries regarding auditions, should you need it, are best directed to me via private message.

III. Notices of Convenience

The primary method of communication for this project will be through Discord. Should you be selected for the role, you will be provided the link required to join the production team’s server. While not required to join, it is recommended for the easy sharing of files and communication in real-time.

All audition scripts below have appended to them stage directions, in italics and parentheses above each line of dialogue or narration. The characters listed on this casting call for auditioning are the sole characters of the novella, and may be cast to offsite actors. Do not let this discourage you from auditioning, however. Note also that all scripts included for auditions in this casting call contain light spoilers, and should you be selected for a role, it is likely the story entirely will be spoiled for you. The deadline for all auditions is March 11th, 2021, at 1300 hours.

Should any amenities need to be made to ensure a safe and convenient experience within the production of Mistress Red, do not hesitate to contact me. In compliance with the Equality Act 2010, Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, all auditions will be equally and fairly considered with the greatest degree of reflexivity in mind, and not dismissed on the basis of disability, impairment, gender, race, mental health or other factors of the individual unrelated to the immediate requirements of each role listed on the casting call.

The audiobook project Mistress Red, while directly inspired by the works of my friend, Matthew Fletcher, is unassociated with the production of his flagship visual novel, Legends of the Galaxy, Season 2. Mr. Fletcher’s assistance in this project has been, for the betterment of his own project, limited to informal (but incredibly helpful) provision for which I am eternally grateful.

It would be greatly appreciated by myself if those of whom have taken the time to consider this project share it with others who may also be interested. The more auditions, the merrier!

IV. Author’s Guarantee

Many projects on the Casting Call Club fall short in transparency with its production team, oftentimes failing to release. It is my personal guarantee that the Mistress Red project does not fall victim to the same pitfalls. The pre-production for the project has been completed in advance of this casting call. Consequently, I vow to ensure the project becomes a finished production, freely available on the aforementioned platforms, by Summer 2021 at the earliest. A more specific release date will be announced closer to the time. The project’s seven chapters will be released once all seven chapters are complete, on a weekly schedule, chapter by chapter. On the eighth week of release, a full audiobook will follow.

All members of the production team will be updated regularly through the project’s Discord server, via email, this casting call and/or any other convenient method of communication about the status of the Mistress Red project with the aims of fostering a cooperative, transparent environment.

It should be noted that Mistress Red is listed as a non-budget, just-for-fun passion project, and so financial compensation is impossible. Instead, what I can offer is an audiobook of the highest possible standards with your talent and diligence responsible for a wonderful, entertaining experience. At the end of each chapter, your name will be accredited in an end credits scene, regardless of whether your voice is present or not, and pinned comments will also feature your names and provided social media or other links (YouTube release only). Further, in the description box of each chapter, your names, social media and any other relevant links you wish to provide will be included.

Thank you, dearly, for your consideration. Best of luck,

Myrtille

Latest Updates

  • Long Awaited Update

Heya! It's been a long while since our last update. During this time, we've been doing table reads, and are now halfway through recording the audiobook! If by some miracle you've stuck around to see this update, your continued patience and support is much aprpeciated. We've got a few hurdles left ahead of us before we're home free, so the release date proposed in the casting call will, unfortunately, have to be pushed back a little bit. I was very much underestimating the challenges that lay ahead in the production. But rest assured, this project will be finished - it just may take a little bit more time to get it done right. Until then, hang in there! More updates may come in the future. Feel free to drop me a line if you'd like to keep in touch. See ya then!
  • Casting

As of posting this, it is now 1300 hours, March 11th, 2021. Which means no further auditions for this project will be accepted. Casting will commence shortly. Keep an eye on your inboxes, folks!
  • Weekly Roundup 5

As the final week of auditions almost draws to a close, let's talk about casting. You will be notified if you are being cast for a role to which you have auditioned for, and if this happens to you, congratulations! You're everything I want. But, if you aren't notified, you may still get a DM from me, as I may feel your voice is best suited to another role. In which case, congratulations to you, as well! Irrespective of how you are cast, if you are, you can expect a message from me soon giving you access to the project's Discord server, and in it, every little bit of documentation necessary for the production! It'll be a busy weekend, but I hope the transition from auditioning to casting will be as smooth as my brain for you. Very smooth.
  • Deadline Pushed Back

As anticipated, it is required to push the deadline for auditions back until March 11th, at 1300 hours. Casting of some roles will continue as planned on March 4th through March 11th. Thank you all for your patience!
  • Weekly Roundup 4

It's almost time. Last month, the casting call for this project was uploaded in the (perhaps vain) hopes it would garner a significant response. And it has. Having listened to over fifty auditions so far, I'm both excited and grateful for your time and consideration! But our work is just beginning. There are still two days remaining, and roles with less auditions than initially projected, and so it may be likely that this casting call's deadline will be extended a week so that these roles may be filled, while others are cast. Nothing is concrete yet, though. An additional, non-weekly update will be posted should that decision be made. Until then, stay tuned, share this project with your buds, and let's hope more auditions come on through before the deadline!

Arthur Prowse / Narrator

Protagonist and narrator in the first-person, Arthur Prowse is a daring, Imperial archaeologist and stalwart defender of the throne. A middle-aged, human male with a prissy, received pronunciation of the English language, Arthur is initially a ruthless cog in the well-oiled machine of galactic fascism, until he undergoes a crisis of faith in the Empire, growing both a spine and a moral compass throughout the duration of his latest, heart-racing expedition to save what he loves - if he only knew what. As such, he’s the idyllic, Gothic protagonist yet to witness his first of many tragedies.

The role of Arthur Prowse as a first-person narrator is exceptionally demanding, with over 19,000 words in both prose and dialogue. Aspiring audiobook narrators are encouraged to audition. Though Arthur is conceived to speak with a British RP accent, as most Imperials often do, other interpretations are more than welcome. Bonus points if you like Batman. Good luck.

  • (Narration: In this excerpt, Arthur Prowse has just discovered the tomb of the Sith Lord Iesea iv Katedij [prn. Ee-ye-SAY-ah iv Cah-TEH-deej], and is filled with awe and wonder. He recounts his feelings upon seeing Iesea’s golden sarcophagus up close, longing to seize it. But he is fearful and wary.)

I felt the whispers of a god crawl throughout my body, gnawing at my spirit, leaving only the empty vacuum of fear. It was that numinous feeling again, far greater, far stronger than that which I was lured by the mask above the well. But my yearning, my lust to caress my fingers upon the golden likeness of Iesea iv Katedij herself, buried underneath the marble slab I gawked at, was offset by immense terror. A great unquiet that held me back, made my very soul tremor.

  • (Narration: In this fight scene excerpt, Arthur is battling with our antagonist at a critical moment of the story. Each action is fast-paced, emotionally-charged and heart-racing. It’s do or die for Arthur, and he’s getting hurt.)

Al’assa’s boot rocketed into my jaw, I heard a terrible snap as I tumbled to the sand. Feeling teeth wedge themselves in the back of my throat. I hoisted myself upright, feeling the burning resolve of Imperial duty spur me on as Al’assa kicked me down again. My vision blurred again in stretches. I felt queasy. Spat out my teeth, my lips trickled with hot blood and dusty saliva. But still, I resisted.

  • (Dialogue: In his negotiations, Prowse recounts memories of old regarding the Chiss. He tries to flirt with Al’assa, a member of the species, but his conduct is filled with Imperial, standard-issue racial prejudice.)

“Your people... I’ve only heard stories about them, in old legends from the Outer Rim. You call yourselves the Chiss, right? Never thought I’d see one up close. You clean up pretty good… for an alien, anyway.”

Al'assa

Role assigned to: Thea Solone

The antagonist of Mistress Red, but by no means a villain, Al’assa is a rival archaeologist from the Chiss Ascendancy with a furious temper. Emotional, over-the-top and contemptuous of Imperials, she is both the rock and the hard place between which Arthur Prowse is stuck. Al’assa undergoes a cycle of betrayal on her journey, before learning to manage her distresses and trust in the people she loves again.

The role of Al’assa is a challenging one, as she is frequently angry or upset. She is a tragic character, much of her distresses are derived from old, Gothic literature. She is a lone spirit - anxious and paranoid, quick to temper and inconsolable when sad. But she is strong-willed, strong-bodied, and a cunning archaeologist in her element. As she is a non-native English speaker, English Second Language (ESL) auditionees are more than welcome. Native English speakers are encouraged to apply, also.

  • (Dialogue: Al’assa tries to flirt, with limited success. Her mockery is still ever-present, and her voice is pained and croaky. She’s hurt, but deep down, she’s imparting upon Arthur Prowse the worldly wisdom of what he needs to do to grow as a character.)

“I almost died, you idiot. Least you could do is pretend you aren’t just another heartless Imperial, every once in a while. Who knows, maybe you’ll care about something other than your mighty Emperor. Something worth keeping.”

  • (Dialogue: Appalled and disgusted, Al’assa chastises Prowse for being ignorant to the lesson she taught him. Very soon, she’ll blow her top.)

“Have you learned nothing, Prowse? I told you, back in the tomb, that you’d be a better man if you stopped licking your dead Emperor’s boots. That you might walk away from Moraband with something more than a weapon or a gift for your superiors to abuse. But you haven’t listened to a single word I’ve said, have you?!”

  • (Dialogue: Recalling her scar’s origins, Al’assa traces it back to the accident long ago. The one that deep down, she blames herself for. She’s internalised her guilt into an amalgamation of abandonment issues, anxiety and a depraved, wrathful anger. She tries her utmost to suppress it. She fails.)

“Yes, that’s how I got it! I never wanted to talk about it. I hate it. I hate that I choose to keep it. But I must. It’s always reminded me of my father, of-”

    (Pause.)

    “-It’s all my fault.”

Iesea of Korriban

The titular character of Mistress Red, Iesea iv Katedij, known also as Iesea of Korriban and Lord Iccrea, was once a Sith Lord during the reign of the old Sith Empire. Unlike most Sith Lords, Iesea was a scientist, researching cloning Force users - especially herself. Her experiments did not end well, and as the Old Republic began to close in, she feigned her death and froze herself in carbonite to return when her work was needed. It is she who Arthur Prowse and Al’assa alike seek, for their own ends.

Technically over three-thousand years old by the time of Mistress Red, Iesea is a sinister, scientific genius - a master of the dark ways of the Sith. Like Al’assa, Iesea is a non-native English speaker, so English Second Language (ESL) auditionees are encouraged to try for the role. Nevertheless, English First Language speakers are welcome to audition, also.

  • (Dialogue: Knowingly. A hint of curiosity in amongst the maliciousness of her voice.)

“Did you find what you were looking for, amongst the dead?”

  • (Dialogue: Reassuringly, but no less intimidating.)

“Tsk tsk. You may not be a soldier of the Empire I once knew, but you serve a Sith master, Imperial. Dead or otherwise. You can’t hide that from me. Nor can you hide the desire for my help.”

  • (Dialogue: Chastising Arthur, nonchalantly discarding the possibility that she could’ve killed his companion in the most terrifying fashion.)

“Killed her? I know. I was going to. She had it coming. You keep terrible company, for an officer of the Sith Empire.”

William I’Oner is an Ensign under Arthur’s command, but he is also the archaeologist’s best friend. Clever, witty and full of jollity, I’Oner’s presence at Arthur’s side breathes some much needed fresh, cool air to ease the tensions of the story, and give Arthur the clarity he needs to solve the many puzzles of his adventure. Of the two, however, William is the more staunch Imperial, doing better to hide his racial prejudices against Al’assa and Iesea than Arthur could ever harbour for them.

William I’Oner is a youthful male, whose accent I have not given much thought to. Feel free to go nuts with him. Most anything would fit.

  • (Dialogue: Yelling. Fear, confusion, and anger. A cocktail for disaster.)

“Why do we have a target painted on our backs, Prowse?”

  • (Dialogue: Incredibly smug satisfaction, having done something productive to escape a very sticky situation. It’s a good day to be Ensign William I’Oner. Note also he is talking to two people at once.)

“Director Prowse, sir. Miss. There’s a room on the other side of this pit.”

  • (Dialogue: Irritated. Only I’Oner has the balls to stand up to a full-fledged Sith Lord. Though to Iesea, he is a subject to be teased.)

“Don’t be ridiculous. Once you’re gone, you’re gone. No one's ever come back from the dead.”

Sentinel is an Imperial messenger droid, and gives the deceased Emperor Palpatine his voice from beyond the grave. He thinks you’re not verified, but can’t solve Captcha puzzles. Although an ageless robot through and through, each of his monotonous and disturbingly clear sentences comes with a modicum of menacing. The Sentinel is precise and ruthless to his very computer core. Many voices would fit this character. Go ham.

  • (Dialogue: Stern, and very firm. Almost menacing.)

    “You are not authorised.”

  • (Dialogue: The droid’s interest is piqued upon seeing the Sith Lord, Iesea. It is pleased. Insidiously so.)

“But you, I would certainly like. The Emperor will be most pleased to see you, Lord Iccrea.”

  • (Dialogue: Artificial satisfaction and civility. The Sentinel droid is monotonous nevertheless.)

“Your service to the Empire will be most invaluable, Lord Iccrea. As has yours been, Director Prowse. So much so that my master wishes to relay unto you another message from beyond the grave.”

Role assigned to: Zarek

Once the Emperor of the galaxy, now a dead man and a hologram. He relays his last commands through the Sentinel droid with every inch of hellish, Shakespearean evil emanating from his voice. As this character exists in Star Wars Canon continuity, this role requires an impersonation, although liberties and unique interpretations of the character are always welcome.

  • (Dialogue: Insidious and depraved, the Emperor of the Galaxy, Sheev Palpatine, bestows unto Arthur Prowse his speech for the commencement of Operation Cinder. He reels with anger.)

“Director Arthur Prowse. Operation Cinder is to begin at once. The Imperial Navy shall burn away at the rebel’s misplaced ideals of resistance and defiance. You too are but one of many instruments through which this shall be achieved, though your services shall be... different. Heed my messenger. He shall relay you to your target.”

  • (Dialogue: Palpatine expresses a disgusting pleasure at Prowse’s success. He retains, nevertheless, both his holographic imprecision and the menace a Dark Lord of the Sith possesses in the remnants of his ashen soul. Note the pronunciation of Iesea as Ee-yeh-SAY-ah.)

“Iesea of Korriban, as she is known to you, is a scientist. Her weapon is her mind. Respect it. For with it, the Empire will rise again. You will live to witness that rise in the final order to come.”

  • (Dialogue: Menacingly.)

“The Imperial Reclamation Service, as it once stood, is no longer necessary to my plans. You are relieved.”
