Star Wars: Kanan Book I: The Last Padawan

Project Overview

Grand Stag Studios is proud to announce that we will be collaborating with Krayt Dragon Films to bring to life the Star Wars: Kanan: The Last Padawan series! This will be a first time for the GSS staff to produce something that isn't animated but we are excited for the challenge and look forward to working with you all!

This 12 issue series follows Caleb Dume, a.k.a. Kanan Jarrus from Star Wars: Rebels, as he transitions from the Clone Wars, to Order 66, and how he eventually became the rebel we know and love today.

A few ground rules before you audition.

- Please make sure you can commit to the series and reprising you roles.

- Have a better than average microphone. Our sound engineers can only do so much to enhance quality.

- Have a Discord or be able to create one. It allows for us to communicate and upload documents much easier than Skype or any other platform.

- Certain characters, such as those already portrayed in media, will need to be similar if not a dead ringer for your voice to be cast. I am referring to characters such as the Clones, Hera, Zeb, Sabine, etc. However, please do not let this discourage you from auditioning for those roles!

- Lastly, enjoy yourselves!

Thank you again to Krayt Dragon Films for this incredible opportunity! And may the odds, and the Force, forever be in your favor.

Last night we completed the final processes of the series and published it early this morning! This is what the final product looks like! Thank you to everyone who auditioned and please be on the look out for our next casting calls! https://youtu.be/uUQVc-Ijg_I
  • Final Castings

Hello everyone! Just wanted to thank everyone for auditioning for the project! We're calling it a wrap just a bit early which I always enjoy! Special congratulations to those cast and to those of you who auditioned, I cannot thank you all enough for making the casting decisions incredibly difficult! There will be more roles for this series opening up within the next few weeks so be on the look out for those. Thanks again! -William C. , Executive Producer at Grand Stag Studios
  • Third Round of Castings

Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! Just posting this quick update to let you all know we only have three remaining roles to be filled! Caleb Dume, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger. I’ll be making the final calls on these roles on either Sunday or Monday! Keep an eye out on your notifications. If I liked your performance, I may have you audition again with some pointers. Until then I hope everyone gets the chance to see The Last Jedi and looking forward to finishing this casting call on a high note!
  • Second Wave of Castings

Hello once again everyone! Just a quick announcement. We have just made our second wave of castings for the project! A special thanks to everyone who has auditioned so far, there were a lot of tough choices to make with this round! There will be about two more rounds of castings before we close out the casting call so stay tuned! The remaining roles: Caleb Dume, Janus Kasmir, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger. If you have auditioned for any of these roles, this does not mean that your audition won't be cast! It just means that we're either waiting for more auditions or that we're having to decide between two auditions! Next casting wave will happen either Friday or Saturday, with the final one on the 20th.
  • First Round of Castings

Hello everyone. First, I wanted to thank those of you who have auditioned so far! I have made my first wave of castings, but obviously there are more than half of the roles left unfilled. If the role is still opened and you have auditioned already, this does not mean you are no longer in the running for the character. Far from it! It either means that I am having a difficult decision between two or more auditions, or I'm still waiting for more of a variety with the auditions. Congrats to everyone who has been cast so far and may the Force continue to be in your favor!

Not every Jedi perished in Order 66. Kanan Jarrus survived the Emperor's purge, going underground for years and hiding the truth about who he really was. This is his story. Living on thanks to the sacrifice of his master, Depa Billaba. On the planet Kaller he met the smuggler Janus Kasmir, who taught him how to surivive as a fugitive. Going into hiding he forsook the Jedi ways for some time, swapping his blue-bladed lightsaber for a blaster and a pony tail. Most of the Kanan series will revolve around Young Kanan and he will be in all 12 issues in the series. Young Kanan is roughly 8-9 during the timeline of the first issue so try to voice accordingly. He should sound more mature for his age.

  • <NARRATING> "The Clone Wars... three plus years of fighting between the Grand Army of the Republic and the Separatist droids. For a while there, back at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant... I thought I had missed out on all of the action."

  • "Do you know who you are addressing? Master Depa Billaba, a member of the Jedi High Council!"

  • "I asked questions to better understand why a decision was made... I never questioned the decisions themselves! And stop calling me kid!"

Janus Kasmir was a Kalleran male who lived as a scoundrel on the planet Kaller around the time of Order 66. Shortly before Order 66, Kasmir was at the Kalleran Palace when Depa Billaba and Caleb Dume liberated the planet from Separatist control. After Order 66 he harbored and trained the young Caleb in the ways of the smuggler and how to survive by deception and stealing. Kasmir should have a smug and easy-going attitude to him. I can imagine several accents for him, but just not any that are too thick.  He can also be portrayed without an accent.

  • <INTERRUPTING> "The point Gamut Key is trying to make is... we Kallerans don't see much difference between one general and another."

  • <AFTER ORDER 66> "Well look who's here? If it isn't a baby Jedi."

  • "Huh, guess it's tough to suddenly be among the galaxy's most wanted. You look like you haven't eaten in days... *sniffing* and you smell like you haven't bathed in weeks! Can't do much about the latter, but this should help a little with the former."

Years later, he has returned to the Jedi ways to train Ezra Bridger and cause a general pain in the Empire's side. Since he is the lead of the series, I need his voice to be very similar to Freddie Prinze Jr.'s portrayal of the character.

  • "Rodger that Fulcrum. Ghost out."

  • "What's the word Hera?"

A Chalactan Jedi Master, Depa Billaba served on the Jedi High Council in the final years of the Republic. She witnessed the discovery of Anakin Skywalker whom Qui-Gon Jinn believed to be the Chosen One, and tried to determine the Force as the galaxy slid into turmoil and war. During the Clone Wars Billaba would take Caleb Dume on as her Padawan, but was unable to finish his training before the dreaded Order 66.  Billaba has never been voiced in any other media, only portrayed. I would like to try and honor her potential Arabic accent, however I am fine with a North American/European accent instead.

  • "Remember the basics Caleb Dume... assume a defensive pose. Form three."

  • <ORDERS> "Captain Styles, have your men take the left flank! Commander Grey, the right! It is time to end this. All forces attack!"

  • "In defeat, the Separatists have abandoned Kaller and will no longer impose upon your village for supplies and labor. Nor will the Separatist General Kleeve and his staff billet here at your expense."

Named for the war they fought, the Clones were created on Kamino from the DNA of Jango Fett. They were bred to fight a war that was lead by the Jedi Generals who stood in defense of the peacekeeping Galactic Republic. However, once Emperor Palpatine issued Order 66, they turned on their Jedi Generals and all who served in the Jedi Order. Some of the brain washed Clones would try to make sense of Order 66 after it occurred, others only believed that they were good soldiers following orders. I am looking for something similar to the Dee Bradley Baker interpretation of the Clones. There are three main clones with potentially five at the most. If possible, attempt to slightly modify the voice three different times when reading these lines.

  • <SHOUTING> "Welcome to Kaller! How do you like it so far?"

  • "With all due respect General, I must disagree... we'd be lost -- the whole war would be lost -- without Jedi leadership. And believe me, you wouldn't want to see this battalion without your leadership."

  • "...he doesn't know you're teasing him. I've got an incoming transmission, I'll be right back. This is C. C. dash 10 slash 994."<ORDER 66>"Yes, my Lord."

General Kleeve was a male Devaronian general in the Confederacy of Independent Systems. He was in command of the droid forces on Kaller when Depa Billaba and Caleb Dume, along with the Grand Army of the Republic, routed his forces causing him to abandon the planet. For his accent I am looking for something similar to how the Zygerrians sounded in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It needs to be very thick, deep, and intimidating.

  • "The Jedi's leadership was more effective than anticipated. We were told Billaba was unstable... obviously that intelligence is now suspect."

  • "I'm afraid the Separatists must abandon Kaller for now, Gamut Key.  I know you Kallerans did not appreciate our presence here... we'll see if you prefer Republic tyranny."

  • "Prepare my shuttle, we are leaving.

Gamut Key is a male Kalleran who either had extreme wealth or a political office during the time of the Clone Wars. After his planet was freed from Separatist control and transitioned to Republic control, he had his reservations but accepted the shift in power. After Order 66 the Emperor named him the Governor of Kaller and it's planetary system. Gamut is in his middle ages during the time of the Clone War and by the time of the Empire he is roughly in his older years by Kalleran aging. I don't have any set accent in mind for him so it can go either way. However, if the voice for Janus Kasmir is cast with an accent, I may request that you try to emulate it into Gamut Key.

  • "And where will you and your staff billet, General Billaba?"

  • "As you wish General."

  • "I was granted this title by the Emperor himself! Along with a shiny new palace and these luxurious red robes of authority... or something like that."

The captain and heart of the Ghost crew, Hera Syndulla is a gifted pilot and leader. While Hera is a strong commander -- and especially adept at dog-fighting with TIE fighters -- she was also warm and nurturing. That about sums her up.  As I said in the description for this project I am going to be a real stickler about having her sound like Vanessa Marshall's portrayal of the character.

  • "The word Kanan, is "milk run.""

  • "We're picking up supplies for the Tarkin Town refuges on Lothal. Crates are ready and waiting for us on the planet Kaller."

The B1 Battle Droid units made up the bulk of the Confederacy of Independent Systems' arm. They were incredibly stupid on their own, but could overwhelm Republic forces by just the sheer number of them. The B1 Droids should sound similar to Matthew Wood's version of these mechanical comical reliefs. I encourage the use of sound effects to achieve their icon voices.

  • "General Kleeve... Republic Clones are routing our forces."

  • "Your orders, sir?"

  • "Roger, roger."

Gruff, mean, and the muscle of the Ghost team, Garazeb 'Zeb' Orrelios was once a cunning Lasat honor guard who adopted the cause of the rebellion against the Empire after bringing his species to the brink of near extinction. Despite his hulking frame, Zeb is highly-educated and articulate... not to mention a softy at times. Yet another member of the Ghost crew who I'm going to be a stickler for getting as close to Steven Blum's portrayal as possible.

  • <DISMISSING> "Quiet, you."

  • "It's not my fault! Chopper did it!"

  • <GRUMBLING> "I didn't have to put up with this type of bantha fodder a few months ago."

Sabine Wren is a Mandalorian warrior, explosives expert, and graffiti artist -- all of which has come in handy as one of the first rebels in open rebellion against the Empire after her family exiled her. Yet another member of the Ghost crew who I will be a stickler for a near accurate portrayal by her original voice actress, Tiya Sircar.

  • "My name is Sabine, house Vizla, clan Wren of Mandalore."

  • "Hey, not every mission can be about rebels fighting the Empire. What's the gig this time?"

Growing up on his own during the age of the Empire, Ezra Bridger relied on his street smarts -- and subconscious Force abilities -- to survive. He became a con artist and a small-time thief, doing what he needed to get by on his home planet of Lothal. After a mission with the Ghost crew, Ezra realized there was so much more to life than only looking out for himself and joined the crew in their rebellion. During this time he would train under Kanan Jarrus to become a Jedi himself. Another member of the Ghost crew that I'll be a stickler for a similar portrayal by his original voice actor, Taylor Gray.

  • "I don't have any parents. I've been on my own since before I can remember."

  • "Isn't that technically two words, Hera?"

  • "Heyyy Kanan... snap out of it!"

Emperor Palpatine was once the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. Over the course of a decade he manuvered himself to higher and higher positions of power, increasing that power, and then remaining in office longer than any Chancellor in galactic history. After the death of Count Dooku and General Grevious, the time had come to execute Order 66. This effectively eliminated all of the Sith's hated enemies, the Jedi, and allowed him to user in a new Empire. I am fine with any interpretations or mimics of any version of Palpatine so far. Bonus points for adding the holocom sound effect to your audition.

  • "Commander Grey. The time has come..."

  • "Execute Order 66."
