Spider-Man and Batman: Disordered Minds (SFM Animated Adaptation)

Spider-Man and Batman: Disordered Minds (SFM Animated Adaptation)

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION
Hey there! This is a casting call for an animated fanfilm that is a direct adaptation of the 1995 Marvel/DC crossover comic Spider-Man and Batman: Disordered Minds. If you're familiar with my channel (Immortal Dream Entertainment) and it's non-profit fanmade series (Arby 'n' the Chief: Next Gen), you may notice that this project in particular isn't exactly like my previous ones. This project is going to be a lot more serious, so unlike Next Gen, I'll be a lot stricter about how casting goes here.

For those of you unfamiliar with my channel, I primarily did a Halo fanmade machinima (movies made with video game footage) based off of another machinima called Arby 'n' the Chief. It was a very crude and irreverent comedy show where a lot of logic was thrown out the window.

This project will not be like that. I'm aiming for this to be a lot more serious in a tone similar to the live action Spider-Man movies (namely the Raimi ones) and the Batman the Animated Series cartoon, as well as some parts of the Arkhamverse Batman games and the Insomniac's Spider-Man games.

What is this project?
As you can obviously tell from the title, this is an animated fanfilm about Spider-Man and Batman meeting for the first time while going after The Joker and Carnage. Now, you are probably assuming that this is going to be a short fanmade animation, similar to that of what Death Battle does or the animations that MightyRaccoon puts out often. This is a fanFILM, and will likely be feature length.

This fanfilm will give more motivations to why the characters are acting the way they are, adding more context for some scenes, and improving the storytelling in some areas so that it doesn't feel extremely rushed like some parts of the comic did. But for the most part, this will follow the basic plot of the comic's story.

The film will be animated in SFM (Source Filmmaker), using assets from different games (such as Batman from Injustice 2), and some assets may be characters from other games but are a different character in this story (for example, a modified Joker model from MK11 is being used for Cletus Kasady due to similar appearances). Just to clear up any confusion. I am doing everything except voice acting and soundtrack.

All character portraits next to the auditions represent the characters as they will look in the animation, and all of the thumbnails were done by me in SFM.

The Casting Process
Unlike Arby 'n' the Chief: Next Gen, where a majority of the characters speak through Xbox Live microphones, this does not take place in a virtual world, so good audio quality is a must here. That means turn off any fans and air conditioners, and make sure that nobody is home who'll talk in the background. I can edit small things like slight background noise and pitch if need be, but make sure that there isn't a lot of reverb (or no reverb at all if you can). For those of you unaware of what reverb is, it's the echoes in the background of your recording when you speak. Also, keep an eye on your audio levels so they aren't peaking. If you aren't sure what peaking is, its when that audio level on your recording software gets too high, and it makes the audio sound worse as a result. If you need to yell in your audition, consider turning your microphone input down in your audio device settings (if you aren't sure, you can probably figure it out on Google).

In terms of the casting process and what I want and don't want to hear, paying attention to the descriptions is key here. Some characters I may be looking for a good impression, while others I am looking for a good interpretation. That means for characters like Batman, I'm not expecting you to do a perfect imitation of Kevin Conroy's Batman. If you want to, you can, but I don't want you to feel pressured to do so. I'm looking for people who can get the personality, attitude, and tone of the character down and sound like they aren't reading off of a script. Also, while it isn't required, I'd like it if you told me what your inspiration was for a voice so I get an idea of what you're going for.

In terms of submitting your audition, send in as many takes/variations as you'd like. More variations and takes on a character's voice always helps your chances. Also recommend exporting the file as a mono channel, 16-bit depth, 44100 Hz sample rate .wav file. This is so I don't have to edit it to work in SFM later. Most audio programs on the PC should let you pick the sample rate and bit depth before you record. If you NEED to send your audition in as an MP3 because of the file size, that's fine, I'm just making a recommendation.

Things to Know if You Land a Role

  • If you want to do live directing sessions to make sure you get the lines right, then feel free to ask and we can discuss a time to do it on Discord or another app. Discord would be preferred as I will be making a server to keep everyone updated on the project and keep track of everyone.
  • If you prefer not to do a live directing session with me, that's fine too, but in that case I'd like you to do at least 3 takes or more with your lines so that I have more to choose from.
  • If you don't have discord and/or don't want to use it, email is perfectly fine, but I'll be checking up more often to make sure you're still on track.
  • I am very lenient about deadlines here. While it helps to get the lines sent in as soon as possible, I understand some people have busy lives and need more time to get things done or need to work on paid projects first. That being said, please don't take half of a year to send in your lines. This project will already be long enough to work on, and I don't want any unnecessary holds on scenes because one person didn't send in lines.
  • Some people prefer to be credited by their real names, and some people prefer nicknames. Let me know what you want to be credited as and if you want me to put any handles/links in the description of the video when it is released.
  • If this does well, it is possible I may bring you back for future projects with said character if I have any in mind. Keep this in mind when auditioning.

If you have any lingering questions, do feel free to send me a message on here and I will answer what I can!

  • Deadline is Over

Hey all, thanks a ton for all the auditions for this project! There's a ton of talent here, and it's going to be really hard to decide on some of the roles, but I should be getting all of it done some time within the next few weeks. For some of you, even if you didn't get any of the main roles, I may come to you offering you one of the extra roles if I think you could do one of them well. Once all of the roles have been casted, I'll be setting up a Discord server and sending you all an invite (unless you don't have Discord and/or don't want to join it). If you don't want to join or don't have Discord, I will need an alternate method to contact you. Also, one other thing. Even if you don't get a certain role, there is always the chance you could get it if the original choice decides to back out or is unable to complete their lines. In that event, I'll be contacting you through this website, assuming you are still interested. Thanks again for all the great auditions, I will be making updates as the casting happens. Hope you are all having a great day! If there are any questions, feel free to message me on here.
  • Pushing Back Deadline

Hey all, got a bit of bad news. Came down with a case of COVID. So, I’m going to extend the casting call for another week while I get over it. Feel free to spread this casting call around, still need someone to audition for Renee Montoya if anyone knows anybody who’d be interested!
  • Halfway to Deadline Update

Hey all, just wanted to say a few things and keep all of you who are interested updated. First, I am stunned and thrilled by the amount of people who showed interest and how almost all of you have sent in great auditions. Honestly, I was worried I was going to have a hard time finding people, now I’m worried I’m going to have a hard time choosing, haha. Thank you guys so much. Second, I wanted to take the time to urge some of you guys to try out or send in demo reels for the extra roles (Joker Goons, Police, Civilians, SCU). Obviously I’m going to have to pick one of each for the main list, but I’d like to showcase as many voices as possible because there’s a ton of talent here. If you don’t want to try out for the extra roles, that’s fine, but I think some of you could nail some of the Joker goons in particular (each goon has a unique name and personality believe it or not, I just didn’t want to crowd the list). Or audition for as many roles as possible. Even if you don’t think you can do it, it never hurts to try. You never know, I might actually like your audition the most even if you don’t. Lastly, if you guys wouldn’t mind, I could use some help finding female Latin American VAs (bonus points if they are LGBTQ) for Renee Montoya, since so far she’s the only named character on the list without any auditions. If you happen to know someone who fits those prerequisites and think this might be something they’d be interested in, I’d appreciate it if you’d send then a link to this casting call and suggest trying out. Thanks again for showing interest guys. It really means a lot to me that this casting call blew up. I’m really looking forward to making this idea a reality! If there are any questions, feel free to reach out and message me and I’ll answer what I can.
  • CCC Error

Hey all, thanks so much for all the auditions! So, I noticed when I looked up the project on CCC that Spider-Man is listed as being a $25 paying gig when viewing it in the Open Projects search. I did NOT set it as being $25, and it should reflect that on the character's audition info. This is some kind of error from CCC (and not the first from this project, I had to list it twice since it told me it wouldn't show up on Open Projects because it was already up for 30+ days despite the fact I had only just published it), and I'm going to try and get ahold of them to figure it out. Anyway, I am very sorry if anyone saw that and was hoping to get paid. I have no idea why it did that, but it should be correct now. Also feel free to audition for as many roles as possible and share the project around if you know someone who might be a good fit for a character!

Arguably DC's most popular character (sorry Superman), Batman is Gotham City's dark knight, striking fear into the hearts of criminals at night. As a young boy, Bruce Wayne was traumatized by the death of his parents, and to this day still questions if there was anything he could have done. While he may have the appearance of a billionaire playboy philanthropist, it is an act he puts on to keep his identity as Batman a secret. It can even be inferred that Batman is not the mask, but rather Bruce Wayne is.

This Batman has gone through several tragedies during his career as Batman, which has impacted his mental state and made him more brutal as a result.

Batman's voice is... an interesting topic. Obviously the fan favorite is Kevin Conroy, and while I love Kevin, trying to imitate him is harder than trying to imitate Mark Hamill's Joker. I don't just want some deep voice either, I want something intimidating, something with vibrato, bass. If you listen to Conroy, he doesn't have a super deep voice, he has a lot of bass and vibrato in his voice. If you can do a REALLY good Conroy, go for it. Otherwise, I'm looking for something along the lines of Roger Craig Smith from Arkham Origins, Troy Baker from the Telltale Series, or Jason O'Mara from the DCAMU.

Note: Please no Christian Bale impressions, he sounds too much like a drunk Yoda. This is a serious take, not a comedy.

  • [Recalling everyone he has lost] How many times have I heard the cracking bones… my partner’s helpless cry… the blast of thunder… and the crackling of the fire? And why am I always too late to save him? Just a madman, someone who wants to prove that everyone is just as insane as he is. The kind of two-bit hoodlum I chew up and spit out without working up a sweat. But I can never stop him… Time and time again, I find myself on this street corner, rage and hate boiling in my veins… and he just laughs! The madman laughs as he takes everything away from me. Everyone I hold dear. He let me go that night… left me there, terrified, caked in my parent’s blood… But he’s been stalking me ever since. Waiting for the day when I let my guard down, and he can finish what he began on that dark and awful night. Not just a madman… but death itself!

  • [Interrogating a thug] What is the Joker planning with the H-8 virus?

[Responding to the notion he won't kill the thug] You're right. [Pause, getting into a more threatening and angry tone of voice] But you'll wish you were if I have to repeat myself...

  • I am vengeance. I am the NIGHT. I am BATMAN!

Role assigned to: Kieran Lattery

Peter Parker was a nerdy, shy, and socially awkward teenager who obtained spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider. He used these powers for himself at first, but when his uncle was killed by a burglar he could have stopped, Peter became the Amazing Spider-Man, as well as a photographer for the Daily Bugle.

This Peter Parker has been Spider-Man for some time (he's in his early to mid twenties), and has experienced the event known as Maximum Carnage. He can still be quippy here and there, but he has matured with experience. I'm looking for something similar to Josh Keaton, Chris Edgerly (from The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man Ride), or Yuri Lowenthal's Spider-Man.

Note: I will NOT be taking impressions of Tom Holland's Spider-Man for this as his Spider-Man, even in No Way Home, still sounds too much like a teenager.

Update: I just noticed this on the open casting calls page, and I dunno why its listed like this, but this is NOT a paying role. If you're seeing Spider-Man listed as being a role paid for $25, it is an error on CCC's part.

  • [Recalling the night Uncle Ben died] He’s not some super-villain. He’s just a common burglar, and ordinary man… isn’t he? But how can an ordinary man do what he’s done? How can an ordinary man pull a trigger… and destroy a world? Look at him, laughing at me… always laughing! He knows I can’t do anything to stop him. He knows that. No matter how many times I revisit this place, this terrible night… my world will keep dying. And everything I hold dear, everything that has meaning… will dissolve into chaos.

  • [Landing on a criminal's vehicle] Hey, you got something on your windshield! I got it!

  • [Attacking Carnage] Maybe not, Kasady! But let’s see what happens when I apply my fist to your smirking face!

Arguably the most famous supervillain of all time, the Joker is the clown prince of crime in Gotham City, and Batman's greatest foe. Trying to pin down what kind of person he is can be difficult, but what is usually agreed on is that he is an insane maniac with no regard for human life. He wants nothing more than to make Batman snap, and will keep pushing and pushing until he does it.

Obviously, Mark Hamill/Troy Baker Joker impressions are more likely to get this one, but I am open to other interpretations as long as they get that crazed homicidal maniac vibe that Joker is known for. Some other good inspirations for voices are Richard Epcar and John DiMaggio.

Note: Some may be considering to do Heath Ledger's Joker, and as iconic as Heath was as Joker, his Joker voice does not fit this project. So I will not be choosing anyone who attempts to do a Ledger impression.

  • [Introduction Line] Y’know that old saying… comedy is subjective? One man’s lament is another man’s laughter! And trust me, we haven’t even gotten to the punchline yet… (Laughs)

  • [Responding to Batman asking him if he thought he would win this time] Well… actually… yes! Though… I was aiming for at least seven billion. (Chuckles) I mean, you’ve been on my tail for WEEKS now, and I’ve been outwitting you… outrunning you… Another couple of seconds, and my madness plague would have begun! Just think of it: every man, woman, and child in the WORLD as looney as I am!

  • Oh, Batsy… so predictable. It’s getting trite at this point. How long has it been since we started our little consociation? At least one or two decades, right? And no matter what I do, no matter who I kill... we always find ourselves back at square one. Maybe we’re destined to do this over and over till we’re old men. Till we DIE! What do you think, Bats? Will we still be doing this in our eighties, throwing punches at each other every 2 hours? (Laughs) And the best part is… nothing will have changed.

Carnage/Cletus Kasady

Role assigned to: DanEss

Carnage is one of if not the most violent character in Marvel's history. Cletus Kasady was a serial killer who shared a cell with Eddie Brock (AKA Venom), and when the Venom symbiote broke Eddie out of prison, it left behind a spawn that would attach itself to Kasady, making him even more dangerous as Carnage. Carnage was so bloodthirsty and destructive, it forced Spider-Man and Venom to team up to stop him. This would happen a second time when Carnage escaped Ravencroft and put together a band of other villains to tear apart New York City in the infamous "Maximum Carnage" incident. Carnage believes that life is meaningless and chaotic, and that there is no real plan. He acts on impulse and bloodlust, killing mercilessly for no reason other than because he can.

Carnage's voice is... a tricky thing. Obviously the first thing many people are going to do is go straight for Woody Harrelson's Carnage voice from Let There Be Carnage or the one from the 90's cartoon. I want NEITHER of those. Woody Harrelson's Kasady and Carnage are too different from this version to work, and the 90's one is too over the top. If you can do the 90s voice but slow it down by 50% (because the 90s show's pacing is way too fast), that works, but I want something similar to Cameron Monaghan's Jerome Valeska from Season 1 of Gotham (reference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gROKtojleQg), maybe mixed with a bit of a redneck accent. That sort of creepy serial killer vibe, the kind that prefers to just destroy and cause chaos without much thought put into it. Someone that can go from calm to insane in a microsecond. Woody Harrelson's Kasady can also work, but keep in mind that this is Kasady's mind as Carnage, not Kasady and Carnage being two separate entities like the movie.

Note: Carnage's voice will have two variations: One with the symbiote, and one without it. I urge people to send in their normal voices without effects if possible, as I'll be adding in the effects, which I will likely use for Venom later if I do something with him in another production. For this reason, I posted what Kasady will most likely look like in the thumbnail for his audition profile here, because Carnage's mind is Kasady's mind as well. Getting Kasady down is the key to doing Carnage right. Anyone who tries to do a deep monster voice for Carnage will not be picked.

  • [Introduction Line] I have to say, Doctor Kafka (pronounced Kahf-kuh)... that I LOOOOVE all this attention! You know... when I was a little boy, mommy and daddy ignored me. THAT'S why I grew up to be so bad. I'm just a poor kiddie who wants someone to pay attention to him. And now that you got me to admit that... I guess I'm cured! So why don't you let me out of here?

  • [Threatening Special Crimes Unit officers] I don’t care if they’ve got microwave ovens! YOU IDIOTS TAKE SO MUCH AS ONE STEP CLOSER… and I’ll be performing some ON-THE-SPOT SURGERY on the good doctor! This’ll no longer be a street, it’ll be an operating table! Snip… snip… SNIP! Time of death? (Cackles) Luckily for you losers, I’m feeling rather benevolent tonight! Y’see, I’m in somewhat of a hurry… so I’ll make ya a deal! Back off… and I’ll let you live! Now ain’t that generous of me? You can go home to your wife and children, tell them you met death face-to-face… and he gave you a SECOND CHANCE!

  • You’ve spoiled my fun once too often, Spider-Man! And tonight, I’m going to rip your vocal chords out right through your mouth!

Doctor Cassandra Briar

Role assigned to: kj2travel

Cassandra Briar is a psychiatrist who was brought in by a congressional committee to deal with lunatics that can't be cured through traditional means, such as Kasady and Joker. She strongly believes that continuing to let these villains thrive as they are in an attempt to cure their lunacy is a fool's errand and will only put others in harm's way, and that drastic measures are needed to stop them permanently. She strongly believes what she is doing is the right thing, and is typically more abrasive towards those who question her ideals and methods. However, unlike the comic version, I am giving her more of a reason for being this way.

Cassandra is a very uptight woman, and as I said above, usually abrasive. Because she believes her methods are foolproof, it has made her cocky and, in a few cases, foolhardy. I want a performance that shows a woman who means well, but has questionable methods, and thinks that she is always right.

  • [Adding onto a line of dialogue by Ashley Kafka] But these high intensity heat waves only temporarily neutralize Kasady’s symbiote. The only way to truly neutralize his threat for good is through his mind. And forgive me for being so blunt, doctor… but this animal is beyond therapy. It’s sheer delusion, if not megalomania, on your part to think that you can rehabilitate him.

  • [Annoyed at Spider-Man] First, don’t touch me! Secondly, I didn’t invite debate on this subject! And I especially didn’t invite you! In fact, I want you off the premises before I call security and have you arrested for trespassing on private property!

  • [Speaking to Jeremiah Arkham about Joker] If I may be blunt, Doctor Arkham… your asylum has failed MISERABLY where the Joker is concerned... and that’s not even counting the countless other inmates you’re quote/unquote “treating” that come in and out of here like a revolving door. But I digress. I’ve read all your files on the Joker, and it’s clear that no therapy can crack the walls around that psyche.

Ashley Kafka is a psychologist who works at Ravencroft Penitentiary to help cure inmates such as Carnage, and is a close ally and friend of Spider-Man. Unlike Cassandra, she is a firm believer that there is at least some good in everyone, even someone like Kasady (even though she is reluctant about it). She is extremely opposed to Cassandra's methods, and she makes her opinions very clear to Cassandra, albeit unable to sway her colleague's opinion. She is considered to be one of if not the best criminal psychologist in her field.

For this character, I'm looking to give a similar feel to her from the old 90's show. Where she actually cares about the well-being of her patients, even the ones she dislikes (AKA Carnage). She is the foil to Cassandra, and as such, she should have more emotion and heart compared to Briar's more cold and unfeeling nature. This voice is up to your own interpretation though.

  • [Responding to Spider-Man's use of the word lunatic] You know I don’t like to use that word for my patients. And you know this is the only one I do use it for.

  • [Surprised and terrified] How did you… that cage was built to contain you! We made it specifically for you! It should’ve been impossible to break out of!

  • [Angry at Briar] So, what’s next Cassandra? Are you going to take him on a tour around the country? Maybe get him on some talk shows? Why not a circus freak show, right next to the two-headed lady and the dog-faced boy?

For Harley's voice, I'm looking for something that sounds like Arleen Sorkin, Tara Strong, or Hynden Walch voices for Harley.

  • [Responding to a hostage] Well, if I explained it to ya, the joke wouldn’t be very funny, right?

  • [Angry at Batman] You’re RUINING THE JOKE, B-MAN!

  • [Being Interrogated] I ain’t gonna rat out Mistah J, copper! Do whatevah ya want ta me, ya have a better chance of getting Two-Face Head as mah lawyah than me talkin’! Oh! And speakin’ of which… I WANT MY LAWYAH!

GCPD Commissioner Jim Gordon is one of Batman's oldest and most trusted allies, and is one of a few honest policemen in a corrupt city. While he bends the law in order to work with Batman against Gotham's criminal underworld, he will always hold a strong belief that doing things by the book is always the right choice.

For Gordon, I am looking for something similar to Gary Oldman in The Dark Knight, Bob Hastings in Batman The Animated Series, or Michael J. Gough in Arkham Origins.

  • If we go charging in guns blazing, we’re just putting the hostages in more danger, detective. We need to wait for him first.

  • This is Commissioner Gordon, keep an eye on the building, but do not engage until I give the order. I repeat, do not engage, over.

  • Stand down, Bullock. There was no way of telling whether that gun was loaded or not. Joker is unpredictable that way. At least we have the rest of the H-8 Virus he stole from Stagg Enterprises. It’s a win, but I wish the cost wasn’t so heavy.

Harvey Bullock is a veteran detective in the GCPD. Though he is not corrupt as other police officers, he is very rough around the edges and often shows a reluctance in relying on Batman. He has some dubious methods here and there, but that is because he believes you need to have them in a crime infested city like Gotham.

For Bullock, I'm looking for a performance similar to Robert Costanzo from Batman The Animated Series.

  • He’s taken around fifteen workers hostage, Commish. We counted eleven, maybe twelve goons plus Quinn and Joker, which makes fourteen of ‘em. All heavily armed. I have snipers covering the roof, but it’s hard to get a read on the other five floors.

  • Who? The Bat? Look, Commish, I know he’s done a lot for us, but we’re getting too reliant on the guy. Every second we spend waiting for his ass to magically kick the crap out of these knuckleheads is another second one of those maniacs gets closer and closer to offing a hostage!

However, he understands why he does it, and helps him on his crusade to stop crime in Gotham.

Alfred typically speaks in a proper manner, which also makes it a bit humorous when he makes a sarcastic remark towards Bruce. I'm looking for something similar to the performances from Batman The Animated Series and the Arkham games.

I'm not looking for anything in particular with Jeremiah's voice, but I want him to sound logical and collected. Like he is the director of an institute.

  • The only rehabilitation for the Joker is to keep him locked away here until we can find a suitable method for his insanity. And before you suggest that your bio-technic chip is a suitable method, I’ve read your reports and your outrageous claims. And frankly, Doctor Briar, we don’t go in for psychological fads here at Arkham. Until something has been tested proven, I see no reason to continue to entertain your delusions of fame and grandeur.

There are a number of named male and female gang members for Joker throughout the story who serve as basic enemies for Batman/Spider-Man. Try to make them sound tough and rough. • Hey, Batman! Try this on for size!

  • Well, look at it this way… we don’t have to worry about the car because we’re in the basement, and we got the entrances covered with steel doors! If he does show up, ain’t no way he’s getting in through here.
