Rook & Crow: A Fantasy Mystery Podcast

Rook & Crow: A Fantasy Mystery Podcast

Project Overview

Rook & Crow is a fantasy, mystery/thriller set in a strange fantasy world, known as the Fae Realm. Edmund Groves, a student at a prestigious magic university, has uncovered some dark secrets about his school, and intends to discover the truth. He documents his findings using his trusty recording device, "RIDDLE," a magic stone with many remarkable capabilities - and a slight attitude. After he unwittingly finds himself partnering up with Quin, a magical forensics student that he despises, he manages to unravel many unsettling mysteries that threaten to endanger the entire realm.

With the assistance of Edmund's - somewhat reluctant - roommate, Lester, the two must deal with magic cults, cryptid horrors, and the notoriously mischievous fae. Murders, dark rituals, and strange disappearances are only some of many leads they'll follow to achieve this daunting task. But it won't be easy - they will find themselves in mortal peril more often than not. The question is, can they figure out what's happening, before it's too late?

Don't be deceived by the fantastical setting - after all, this is not your average fairy tail. This podcast thriller is a delicious blend of mystery, horror, and fantasy that will have listeners sitting on the edge of their seats.

Here's some more information and requirements:

  • Must be comfortable with some mild language

  • Must be comfortable describing scenes that may be unsettling, disturbing, or graphic

  • Must have a quality microphone and access to discord

  • Must be able to make a more long-term commitment should the project be successful

  • It is recommended that you submit 2-3 takes of each line in AABBCC or ABCABC format (although if you want to give us a headache and think that "this 4th take is too good to leave out", then you're welcome to throw it in. But if you want to do CABBCA or some other randomness, we simply want to know: who hurt you?)

Now, a few final things that are important to mention:

  • This project is Deferred - meaning that it is currently Unpaid. If the podcast is successful and actually makes money, we will discuss payment options

  • Krow And Wolf is a production studio that hopes to make more projects in the future. If this goes well, we may offer you other roles within those projects.

  • Rook and Crow will have more roles added as the series continues, so don't be discouraged if you don't get any lead roles; You may have other opportunities later down the line

  • This podcast has only a few episodes written, but we have many more episodes planned for this first season. If the first episode goes well, we will proceed with production.

  • Will be posted on YouTube, Spotify, and other streaming sites.

Thank you for checking out our project, and we look forward to hearing your auditions!

  • Project Updates!

Hello everyone! The deadline has arrived, and we're working on selecting voice actors! There have been so many incredible submissions, so it's been difficult to choose! But we'll be reaching out to the people we'll be selecting, so be sure to keep an eye on your DMs in the coming days!

We want to congratulate the individuals we've selected to the following roles:

Harper Jay Rook - Juniper Lee Thalia Watkins

    Music Composer - James Donovan

We are still working on selecting people for the other roles, and may still add people for the roles that have multiple openings. We will be making more casting calls for the project in the future, so keep an eye out for that as well!

Thank you to all who submitted an audition for the project! You all did such a wonderful job and we look forward to working with those we've selected thus far!

Lastly, Episode 1 will be airing on YouTube, Spotify, and other streaming platforms on October 18th! More information will be provided in future updates, so stay tuned!

  • Project Update

Hello everyone! We're so grateful for all of you who have submitted your auditions so far! It was significantly more than we were expecting to get so early into the casting call, so thank you!

People have been chosen for the following roles:
    Lester Greenwood - Charlie Griffen

    Audio Engineer - Quinlenn

    Now, a few announcements:

    1. Submissions for Lester Greenwood are now closed! Thank you for all of you who submitted for the role - you all did an excellent job as far as we're concerned. Please remember that if you did not get selected for the role you wanted, there will be more opportunities for other roles in the future.

    1. While we have selected one audio engineer so far, auditions will not be closing. It will remain open as long as we're receiving submissions. However, teamwork and reliability are still a must, so we're taking our time with selecting.

Thanks again to all of you who have auditioned so far! Your auditions have all been exceptional. If you still want a role, you can always audition for an extra - we will need plenty of extras. The other roles are also still open and accepting submissions, so give those a shot too!

If you have any questions about a role, don't be afraid to reach out to us via CCC messages or by leaving a question in the project comments!

Lester is a male dark elf, who is also Edmund's roommate. He's majoring in alchemy at the university, and has a knack for getting into - and causing - trouble. He's Edmund's closest (and only) friend, and a fellow cryptozoology student. The trouble he causes is usually for Edmund's benefit - but if the trouble is not for anyone's benefit, it's Edmund's fault.

Lester's voice can be any type of British accent (but may also be any other UK accent).

  • [Complaining] Why do we have to take this creepy old tunnel anyway? It's old, falling apart, and honestly it doesn't even save that much time!

  • [Deadpan] You’re a real bastard. Did you know that?

  • No, he’s talking about a cryptid – one of the [SPOILER] to be precise. Though, to be fair there’s a few cryptid names that sound like slurs - well, at least the ones that happened to irritate Harper Jay Rook the most.

RIDDLE is a sentient recording stone that does a terrible job at not sounding sentient. While he's meant to sound like an artificial intelligence, he actually has quite the personality. He will be used to do the intros and outros, so this is a very major role for the podcast.

Riddle should speak somewhat like an AI - kind of monotone for the most part. Imagine if Wheatley (from Portal 2) was forced to speak formally, but secretly REALLY wanted to be expressive. American or British accents are preferred.

  • You may call this unit ‘RIDDLE’, Agent Rook.

  • You’ve been in the possession of this unit for two weeks, but failed to read the note included in the box. This unit is under no obligation to speak unless directly addressed. [pause] The ball is in your court, Agent Rook.

  • This unit is more concerned with the fact that this “distraction” is more likely to get Mr. Greenwood an audience with the headmaster, rather than a conversation with the police.

Detective Castor Lucero

Deferred: Agreed Amount

Castor Lucero is inspired by classic noir detectives. But, imagine if a rugged, Irish detective were a chaperone at an American middle school in the English countryside. He's technically retired as a detective to teach at the university, however, the small town police kinda suck at their job. So, while he's supposed to only teach magic forensics, he might as well still be the head detective on the local police force.

His voice should be gruff with an Irish accent. His general tone should sound like a very exasperated dad that has a lot to do (in his defense, he's working two jobs and also dealing with three college students with a penchant for causing trouble).

  • What would be preferred, is students that don’t make my job harder than it has to be.

Role assigned to: Juniper Lee Thalia Watkins

Harper Jay Rook is an intrepid explorer documenting their exploits in the horrifying world called "The Darklands" or "The Cryptid Realm". Harper Jay has an academic personality, but has the energy and enthusiasm of a classic explorer. They're a young scholar who has become the most prominent name in cryptozoology. They are a recurring role, and not directly related to Edmund and Quin's adventures. Their perspective will be like an audio journal and they will often be used to give background information on cryptids that Edmund and Quin will be interacting with. They are also very important for the overall lore.

Harper Jay should sound androgynous, but should trend towards a more masc-leaning voice (He/They pronouns). They are softspoken, intelligent, and fearless. They should also sound youthful, but be unmistakably mature and confident.

  • This is Harper Jay Rook, day 30 of my expedition into the darklands. Still no sign of large wildlife. Though I keep seeing those rat-like creatures like the ones I encountered on my first day in this dreary place. They seem to favor the redwoods and are relatively harmless. My studies have revealed that they only grow hostile when you approach their nest… on a completely unrelated note, SYMPHONY mysteriously deleted all audio from the latter half of day 29. Coincidentally, I may have made the aforementioned discovery regarding the rats within that particular half of the recording. I have also decided to call these creatures - for no specific reason - “Bastard rats.”

  • From my experience in the Fae Realm, swamp creatures usually trend towards hostile. Since very little is known about the darklands, I suspect that I might find much worse.

Have you got range? We are always on the lookout for people with dynamic voices of all genders to fill the roles of characters that only appear for a single episode or two - some of these may even be extras with only have one or two lines. That means that you may be given multiple characters to play - and maybe even land a more permanent role later down the line! However, this does not mean that this will be an easy role - in fact, it may be one of the hardest. This job may mean that you will be taking on multiple roles - but that also means that it has a lot of upside. These roles are not gender specific and may be assigned to multiple people, so don't be afraid to audition! (Keep in mind that most, if not all, of these characters will have some kind of UK accent)

This is a very important role. Sound is the essence of this podcast, so we need someone capable of creating atmospheric sounds that place the audience in the same room as our characters. Characters will be actively interacting with their environment, and we'll need someone who can use sound to help paint a picture for the audience.

We're always on the lookout for talented writers to help with our projects, and Rook and Crow is no different. While the first season of the podcast has already been outlined, we still need people who can help us write and edit our scripts. But that also means that we'll be relying heavily on your communication. We're also looking for people who can help with the formatting of our scripts. So if you're looking for a place to be able to develop your writing talents, don't hesitate to submit your portfolio!
