It’s estimated that asphalt increases the overall temperature in cities by up to 12ºF

This may seem trivial, but those 12 degrees negatively impact our world more than most realize:

•increased energy use for cooling

•higher emissions of air pollutants
•lower water quality

•human health risks and discomfort

The unnatural heat can also cause economic losses due to reduced labour productivity, leading to one sad, hot city.

What if the solution was as simple as going from black to white?

Phillips 66, an international energy company, specializing in oil refining and service stations across America, provided a simple solution to these problems: cool pavement, a white sealer that reflects the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them.

Roads slathered in white sealer can be up to 10 degrees cooler than typical asphalt, cooling cities as a whole.

If a city like Los Angeles covered 35% of its streets in cooler pavement, it could save roughly $100 million in energy costs.

That’s why Phillips 66 created “Inspiration Highway”.

The Iconic Route 66, from Chicago to Los Angeles, has been dramatically madeover with a new white finish.

Phillips 66 is committing 10% of their annual profits to environmental change, starting with coating the iconic Route 66 with cool pavement.

The white roads provided a blank canvas for local artists, inspiring drivers to visit and experience the local flavor of cities along the main street of America.

We invited everyone to join in–signature artists created installations with participation from local artists and volunteers.

Phillips 66 customers collected bonus gas points along the route by participating and donating to the project.

All Phillips 66 stations upgraded with the addition of electric charging stations.

The Inspiration Highway project culminated in a series of events along Route 66, starting at the Art Institute of Chicago with a gallery exhibition of the participating artists and a film about the work that premiered at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Fans followed the projects via social media, hashtagging #GetInspired while participating in local art events and snapping selfies with the art along the Inspiration Highway.

Inspiration Highway gained 5.6 billion media impressions from around the world, 1.2 billion social media impressions, and inspired over a million people to take to the road and find their own inspiration.

With your help, we took part in one of the world’s largest attempts to make the world a more inspired place. Scientists estimate that these stretches of white roads could save billions of dollars per year in reduced carbon dioxide emissions – and we think that’s pretty cool.
