  • Knife (m) - ~100 lines for ~$30, at 30 cents a line.

  • Preston (m) ~30 lines at $9

This is a commercial visual novel that will be available on PC/Mac/Linux.

You will be required to sign an NDA and give us permission to use your voice in a commercial game.

General rule of thumb for line payment is 30 cents a line + a bit extra base.

Payment:

Payment for the lines will be sent via paypal once all of the lines are completed. (Or half before, half after for larger payments/line counts.)

Pale Spectrum is a visual novel and a sequel to Brilliant Shadows.  Both are chapters/games from the Book of Gray Magic.

Before you decide to audition, please make sure you understand the rules.

  • Please use a quality mic! (no background noises, puffs, peaking, etc).

  • Please read the lines twice before delivery, and listen to your takes before sending them in. Making a mistake in a single line out of four makes for a bad example when we’re asking for hundreds.

  • There is a possibility that you will be asked to voice the same character in future games containing the character. Please be aware before auditioning for the role.

Deadline for auditions: February 25th, 2017

Deadline for readings: If you are chosen for the role, all lines must be completed within 1 month of being given the script.

Note: If you have more than 100 lines, you’ll receive extra time to voice them.

Make sure you save and send your files properly.

  • Record in 44100hz 16-bit Mono wav format

  • Save files as: Username_Character Name [ex: JohnDoe_Knife]

  • Do NOT say your name in the audio clip. Say only the lines. Thank you!

  • Save each line separately [ex: JohnDoe_Mox_Line1, JohnDoe_Mox_Line2]. You are welcome to record them all in one take, however please use audacity or similar to chop up the lines before sending them in.

  • No more than 4 takes.  Please keep all takes of the same line in one file.

  • Zip files and label as: Username_Pale Spec Audition [ex: JohnDoe_Pale Spec Audition]

  • Send auditions to [redacted]

  • Subject Title: Pale Spec - [name] Auditions

Project Roles: Knife Nik Preston Vasco Felicia
Voice Actor
Voice Actor
Knife
open
Unpaid

Alias: “Knife”

Age: Unknown, even by himself. (He lost track)

Biography: Knife was found by the Weapon organization alone on a planet apparently devastated by the advent of magic on its populace. Though the specifics of the event are known only to Knife, he was now the Core to a magic unlike any the Weapons had encountered prior or sense. Theft magic.

After the event which scattered the weapons, Knife was left alone, scribing magical letters to a leader which very well might have been dead, giving him the method to summon the ‘Knife’ in question. When the summon finally came, it was all Knife could do to maintain his nonchalant demeanor.

Personality: To Knife, the world is a game. He treats battles and wars like they were matches and tournaments, though like any professional gamer, he can be serious when the need arises.

Despite all his appearances to the contrary however, Knife is the product of an atrocity, and the wounds that left him the sole survivor of an entire planet left deep scars.  Scars that he tries to ignore, but still suffer exposure on the occasion when his defenses fail him.

Voice: There are only a few specifics we ask for to Knife’s voice. We want him to be relaxed, cocky but not arrogant, and to have the ability to switch to deadly serious mid sentence and back again.

  • Scene: Knife is gonna stab a guy to steal his memories temporarily so he can know if the individual is trustworthy.

Line 1: “No it’s totally fine, I’m just gonna stab him.”

  • Scene: Knife is hanging out with an ex villainous character before threatening him and switching back to normal.

Line 2: “Haha, man, I think we’re gonna get along great! <serious>And if you cause problems I’ll end you faster than you can blink.</serious> Do you like Pizza? Do they have Pizza on this planet?”

  • Scene: Knife is talking with Sword, uses an ‘off world’ curse before correcting himself, and gets emotional for a second there.

Line 3: “Shit, man- I mean- ‘Light and Shadows’, man… I thought you were dead. It’s good to see you again. Real good. Yeah, I can help you out.”

Scene: Knife stabbed an ally who snuck up on him and feels bad about it. But not that bad.

Line 4: “Oh my b, yo. You’re okay, you’re fine! Here, have my muffin.”

Nik

Unpaid
cast offsite

Name: Nik

Age: 287 years 11 months, 3 days. Hours, minutes, and seconds can be provided if required.

Biography: Nik is a creature of few words.

Nik is a member of the kobold race.

Nik is from the second generation of alchemical kobolds.

Nik is among the best, if not THE best warrior among the alchemical kobolds.

Nik lost an arm in battle recently, and is doing non combat work until the limb regrows.

Personality: Nik is kind, quiet, and thoughtful.

Nik doesn’t really like to talk about herself much.

Nik promises to develop a personality when the war is over.

Nik accepts being identified as female despite kobolds being genderless because her voice sounds feminine.

Voice: Feminine. Ability/desire to do wild chittering noises as she IS a kobold is a bonus.

Estimated Lines: 60ish, though Nik has a major role in the next game, so please realize we would potentially like you to come back for the sequel.

Note: On the tone of Nik’s lines: Nik is not an inflectional drab like Raven from teen titans, it’s more that she applies the incorrect tone to everything, and that incorrect tone being one of absolute normalcy regardless of how horrible, extraordinary, or emotional the line might be to another person, she speaks it as though everything were as weighty her as a shopping list.

  • Scene: Nik runs into her best friend, Krok. She is nervous after not seeing him for a while. Were kobolds romantically inclined, the scene might almost be such. Instead, Nik, like many kobolds, doesn’t show any particular emotion.

Line 1: “Krok, it’s nice to see you well.”

  • Scene: Nik explains to Krok what she has been up to. Despite the horrors of what she’s been through, not that they were either horrors or ordeals, not really, not to her.

Line 2: “I have kept busy. I killed twenty-three of the Warlock’s men and women. I also lost an arm.”

  • Scene: Nik is facing down a creature she has fought before, and beaten at enormous cost with powerful allies. She faces it alone. She is terrified, she is reasonably sure she will die. Instead, Nik speaks in a tone reminiscent of discussing the weather.

Line 3: “It is suggested that you run away. I will not likely win this fight. We are likely to all die.”

Scene: Nik is victorious, relatively unscathed from a fight that should have cost her life. She is overjoyed. She informs the others with the same tone you might tell someone what is on the lunch menu.

Line 4: “I am eternally grateful for your aid. My survival and that victory, mean more than you could know.”

Preston

Unpaid
cast offsite

Name: Preston

Age: 19, though just barely

Biography: Preston was born in Ryuusia, near the palace. Despite a less than violent disposition, his uncle told him he had the body of a warrior, so he got a job as a guard.

Up until the assassination, Preston really hadn’t had to do much more than shoo away the occasional gawker. Now that he has to actually do his job, he finds himself surprisingly well suited to it.

What he handles less well is when he gets caught up in the games of mages. He deeply dislikes the undead, being weightless, and more than anything else, he HATES being teleported.

Personality: Preston is a good natured, small town boy.

Were this a different world and this a different story, he’d have all the hallmarks of being the main character, a young boy of small means who stumbled upon some fantastic destiny.

Preston’s destiny is to be an above average if not particularly great guard whose amicable nature leaves him at the whimsy of way too many mages who are way to willing to mess with him.

Voice: Despite his large frame, Preston’s voice should seem more comfortable coming out of a man half his size and a third his build. Not squeaky, but certainly it should be such that it may seem inappropriate when you first hear it. High to medium range.

Accents are great, but not required, and it is recommended that if you submit with an accent other than your natural one, please submit a take with your natural voice as well.

Estimated Lines: ~30. Most of which will involve Preston being messed with, so expect a lot of yelping and startled noises in general.

  • Scene: Preston is currently stuck, hovering, and can’t get back to his post. Rather annoyed, a little sick, and a little bit scared.

Line 1: “Ooookay, you can let me down now!”

  • Scene: Preston just got teleported by Sword. The experience is not unlike being dragged through hell in order to get somewhere else.

Line 2: “It was so cold… and there was so much screaming… I think I’m going to just walk home.”

  • Scene: Preston is actually doing his job and not being harassed, so he’s eager to be useful.

Line 3: “Never you worry, your Majesty, we’re here, and we’ll keep you safe.”

Vasco
closed
Unpaid
cast offsite

Name: Vasco Dismas

Age: 41 (but he looks a good bit younger)

Biography: Vasco is a career soldier and mercenary. He started in a militia at 14, lying about his age (though he looked twelve at the time) and has since been part of armies, navies, and mercenary companies his entire life. He’s lost his fair share of battles, but won far more, eventually gaining a reputation as a battlefield mage hunter. That was until an unfortunate encounter with a particular necromancer and changeling pair thrashed him and he realized it might be time to retire.

Knowing familiarity with mages (even if it was as a mage hunter) was a highly desirable skill, he applied for the best paying guard job he could find. A guard at the magical training ground of Necromancers and Paladins, the Mountain. Little did he know of the trouble he was walking into.

Personality: Vasco is an old soldier who at this point thinks he’s pretty much seen everything. Even when he hasn’t seen a thing, he’s more the type to cock an eyebrow and give a wry grin than get excited.

He knows the things that make him happy and he’s easy to please.

What is perhaps his most revealing personality traits is the fact that Vasco is typically of the mindset that he gives no fucks. Were there fucks to be had to give, he would opt instead to abstain from having any at all. He’s too old for that shit, and he has better things to do.

Gay. Finds Aelfnod to be a sexy silver fox.

Voice: Older male, something like Admiral Norrington from Pirates of the Caribbean would be particularly appealing but not required.

  • Scene: Vasco is interviewing for the position of Guard Captain at the Mountain.

Line 1: "I happen to have a lot of experience with mages. Admittedly, most of my experience with them involved the business-end of my sword, but I’m more than comfortable around them."

  • Scene: Later in the interview, Vasco asked a question that made Aelfnod choke on his tea. Vasco finds the reaction endearing and funny.

Line 2: "Woah, you okay there?"

  • Scene: After the interview and being offered the position, Vasco is incredulous that no one thought to actually test his abilities.

Line 3: "You’re not even going to take me down to the training yard near the entrance and test my swordsmanship?"

Scene: Vasco has been flirting with Aelfnod who isn’t sure he’s comfortable with dating someone who works for him. Vasco finds this humorous, and teases Aelfnod about it.

Lines 4: “I mean, even if you aren’t sure about it, it’s not like there are other eligible bachelors.”

Felicia

Unpaid
cast offsite

Name: Felicia Mark

Age: 22

Biography: Felicia is a fifth generation mage. Her grandfather was a necromancer, and her mother was a paladin. She is about to graduate and become a full paladin mage. Her two best friends are both Necromancers so she’s sure to find a pair, and she has all sorts of ideas for new healing magics.

Everything was simple until the murders.

The moment students started dying, Felicia knew she had to act. Her best friends worked with her and they have been working to hunt and capture the reported ‘Gray Mage’, whoever they may be, even if it turns out to be Felicia’s favorite Teacher, Lady Aku.

Personality: Felicia is both a realist and a boundless optimist. She always looks for a way to achieve the best outcome, even while accepting that ‘acceptable’ may be the best she gets.

She probably should be wondering if either of her male friends are interested in her romantically, but between studying and now the adventure of hunting a REAL gray mage, she doesn’t even have the time to consider it!

Voice: Serious.  Enthusiastic almost all the time. Any asian accent preferred, but not required. As always, if you do a voice in an accent other than your own, it’s recommended to submit a take without an accent as well.

Estimated Lines: 30ish, possibly more. (Any extra lines will be paid for.)

  • Scene: Felicia is trying to talk to Aku to see if she can get information about the attacks, is considering telling about her group’s attempts to capture the killer. Is very nervous.

Line 1: “Aku, ma’am, do you have a moment, please, I think this is important...”

  • commanding despite herself.

Line 2: “Igor! Quick! Bind them with the bone puppet!

  • Scene: Felicia is terrified as the killer finally has a chance to corner her

Line 3: “I- I’m not scared of YOUAAAAAAAH!”

Scene: Felicia explains something she’s familiar with.

Line 4: “Now I haven’t had a lot of time to examine the sword, but I think it’s some sort of VERY advanced necromantic animation. Possible something taboo and theoretical, like binding a soul!”
