Outlands

Outlands

Project Overview

Outlands is going to be an audio novel, produced as a gift for the writer on the one year anniversary of the book being completed. It follows the story of our two narrators: Eikko and Noah, whom don't exactly get along. However, they're forced to, as the underground base they've lived in for the past seventeen years blows up before their eyes, leaving them as the last two survivors. They make their way across the deserted wasteland they must now call home, meeting a few people along the way to find the only remaining safe haven, named only 'North'.

We'll need quite a few characters. Some actually have quite a few lines, but the characters aren't prominent enough to have their own audition.

  • "(The Leader of the Nomadics) This is the greater good of all the people, the children and the men and the women here. Get that into your thick skulls, or you’ll be at the bottom of the feeding chain here from now on out."

  • "(North General) There are around twenty known surviving factions around the city. When ABOLI left it, some people managed to avoid escape and hide out. ABOLI doesn’t see them as much of a threat, we supposed. Until now."

  • "(Teenager) Yeah, like rules even matter. The only rule you follow is Rule Number One. And, obviously, no murder. Duh."

Casey is one of the people that work for North. She's the one who picks them up, after receiving their distress call. She's one of the youngest people in the base, but acts very mature. She's very smart, especially technologically, and has a quick wit. Casey doesn't have too many lines, but she's quite prominent in the second story (which may or may not be voiced acted, depending on when it's finished by.)

High voice. Slightly bored sounding, and quite matter-of-fact.

  • "Hold on, I'm just scanning you. It won't hurt. Much."

  • "Well, it's going to be quite a few hours, so you might as well just sit tight. Get some rest, if you can't."

  • "This is Casey Locklear, reporting for Sector Seven. We've got them."

Levi Amiot

Levi, like Casey, works for North - but he's more in charge of diplomatic issues. He's not super prominent in Outlands either, but will play a VERY big role later. He's not very font of formalities, and kind of awkward around people. Slightly dorky, and has a super dry sense of humour. Very intuitive, and good at reading people - even if he's not good at talking to them. He used to be best friends with Micah, until they were split apart. Haven't seen each other for seven years.

Mid to high voice. British accent. Perhaps a slightly awkward tone, but fairly friendly. Tends to trail off at the end of sentences. Swears a lot.

  • "I think I’ll just freak you out if I act like you’re guilty of something, but I’m not gonna go easy on you. No, wait, that sounds like I’m mean – sorry! I’m not actually very good at this, it’s my first time actually doing it - uh"

  • "You’re supposed to call me General Amiot, but nobody knows how to pronounce it. I’d prefer it if you called me Levi."

  • "I think it’s better if you rest. The medics will be happy to help you, I’m sure. Much happier than our last case. That person was… hysterical…"

Noah is one of the two narrators of Outlands. He's someone who usually follows the rules, and you could argue that he's a bit stuck up. He's lived his life in comfort, and has grown up with all the privileges that come from being a future leader in-training. He has quite a bit of a weight on his shoulders, because now not only does he have to lead the future generation of Haven Point, but he has to keep all of the secrets that come with it. Secrets he's not sure he can keep, given his strong moral code. Noah is really introverted, and a bit passive-aggressive at times. If he has his head set on something, there's no turning back. He's also in the middle of Denial City. He has the tendency to lose his temper, at times.

Noah should have quite a proper voice, perhaps with his neutral sounding slightly bored- but still being able to convey a range of emotions. It should be about mid-tone. British or American accent is fine.

  • "No way am I going to break Rule Number One, and no way am I going to do anything with you. I have a future here, remember? I have responsibilities."

  • "Urgh, I forgot about the food. How the hell am I supposed to eat anything in a place as disgusting as this"

  • "(Narrating) I need my alone time, and it’s easier to say I’m annoyed than explain that I need time to recharge. Even if it’s one person, social interaction exhausts me and I know Eikko wouldn’t understand, he’d just get hurt more by that because he's blame myself. At least I can just pass this off as a moment of irrationality and annoyance and apologise later. Lying is easier. Confrontation is harder."

Amelia (or Ame) is one of the people Eikko and Noah meet on their way to North. She's living with a group of nomadic travellers who they come across, but dreams of visiting North and helping in improving their world. Amelia is quite loud and outgoing, not really caring what people think of her. She's fiercely loyal, however. She likes to play practical jokes, and takes no rubbish from anyone.

Amelia should have a mid to low voice, with a joking tone to it. She should have a loud boisterous laugh and be quite loud in general.

  • "Glad to know you’re concerned about your friend. I’m Amelia Vance, by the way"

  • "He’s awful, I swear. Don’t worry, we’re on your side. We’ve been looking for survivors ever since the first bombing started, I’ve been on a few missions myself. We don’t like ABOLI either, don’t worry."

  • "Most guys here are so tall. They're like skyscrapers. GUYscrapers. Eyyyy."

(Note: His name is pronounced Ay-ko)

Eikko is the other narrator of the story. Unlike Noah, Eikko's much more of a people's person. He's very much a chatterbox, and he'll talk your ear of if you let him. He has quite a snarky sense of humour, but there isn't a mean bone in his body. Eikko is very imaginative and creative, and could be described akin to an excitable puppy. However, he's much less responsible and is more impulsive. Has quite strong self-preservation instincts, and is determined to make Noah like him.

Eikko has a slightly higher voice, and it should be quite scratchy. Needs to be able to keep a constant energy, and display a range of high-sprung emotions. If you can sound just a tad irritating, that's a plus.

  • "Fine. If you have such high standards, why don't you just talk to me. Get to know me. Promise, I'm worth it."

  • "Woah there, Casanova. First you say you DON'T hate me, and now you're saying you can tolerate me? Wow. I'm not sure I'm ready to take our relationship to the next level."

  • "(Narrating) I pause, watching him as he walks ahead. The light is still glaringly bright, so he looks like a striking shadow making its way through the ruined pavements of the city. I’ve never imagined Noah like this before. Sure, I knew he had to have something other than dorky introvertedness to his personality, but I didn’t expect him to be so willingly open with me."

Along with Amelia, Micah is one of the nomadic travellers that live outside of the underground bases. However, he hasn't always been there. This is what fuels his need to leave, he needs to find the people he left behind seven years ago.

Micah has an endless supply of sarcasm, and he's very outgoing. He doesn't exactly have a filter with what he says, and basically does what he wants. He's very good at what he does, though, being proficient with weaponry. He's easy to get along with, and has a strict moral code. And he makes really bad puns.

Micah should have a mid to deep-ish voice, with an American accent. Should be able to pull of both terrible jokes and a serious authoritative tone.

  • "You guys must be close, huh? Y'know. What kind of relationship is it. Friends, or friends with benefits?"

  • "Wow. Poor Amelia. If you were there, you’d still be a virgin!"

  • "I’ll let you two settle in. Be good, kiddos. I’ll come get you when it’s meal time. You can go outside, but it's probably not a good idea."
