Ollie and Molly (A Kinetic Comic/Animatic)

Project Overview

IMPORTANT: CASTING IS TECHNICALLY NOW CLOSED, EXCEPT FOR OLIVIA. OLIVIA WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THE POSTED DEADLINE. THANK YOU EVERYONE.

Video Introduction (because something's not working): https://youtu.be/b1axf5Mq8UY

When Molly’s mother died, she learned that her father wasn’t JUST a one night stand. He was nobility, and now he’s called the new orphan home to live with him, his wife, and daughter Olivia. Molly, now, must adjust to not only the noble life, but also make her way in a new community of others afflicted with the same genetic condition. The sort of condition that has Molly wandering around at night feeding on rats for extra sustenance. A story about fitting in and finding a place in a world that you weren’t made for. A story of forging a path. A story of two women learning how to be sisters.

Ollie and Mollie will be presented as a kinetic comic in 6 episodes of around 10 minutes each with it’s voice acting underscored by foley art and background music. Think something like Intergalactic Nemesis or the various comic dubs floating around with moving panels and limited animation. It will be posted to my studio (Pixels and Pins) youtube, and vimeo and promoted through tumblr, twitter, and other social media outlets.

This is basically a passion project that, as I started writing it, realized could be so much bigger if I had more people on board. I’m a voice actor myself, and am always looking for new and interesting projects to get involved with, so I hope this is something you can see yourself being involved with, too!

I would like it if you had Skype for easy communication, but it’s not required.

There are certain scenes where I will want to actually run through a quick rehearsal of the lines before you officially record and submit.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to distribute an episode then give every character in that episode 2 weeks to record. I will be providing a calendar upon casting that we can hopefully all stick to without too many hiccups. As a working adult, as well, though….I get it. I’m just all about having the plan.

Mic quality: I’m a va myself, and yeah, my stuff isn’t best of the best, but I do expect good quality without peaking.

I will not be doing the official casting until after the deadline. I want everyone to have a chance.

I look forward to getting to work with some awesome people.

I plan to try to add more art through the month. So far, what’s included are concept sketches for style and mood of certain characters as I saw necessary and are really rough. Definitely not final.

  • Oh gosh! Casting!

This afternoon I will start downloading files and giving some thourough listens to everyone's audition. I've also been listening to them as they come and I'm so excited to hear so many amazing actors wanting to involve themselves with my little pet project. My intention is to have my final decision by Wednesday. I really want to be able to cogitate on the voices and play them back to back and just put together the best possible cast I can where everyone can shine.

There will be one exception to this. I'm holding off on casting on Molly until auditions for Olivia are done. I really want the voices of the sisters to mesh. I've also had some actors give me really strong auditions for both, so I want to wait until everything for Olivia is in before making that final decision. If you have not done so, and wish to, Olivia will be remaining open for another two weeks.

To more technical things: I'm intending to try to keep all VA's on a leash for as short a time as possible. I want to make you have to wait around for things to happen. I'm finishing up the script as we speak, with the intention of distributing it at the end of the month (after both main girls are cast and it's had time to pass through my editors). With 6 episodes at about 20 minutes a piece, this will likely require a commitment through the summer, at least, for what I consider my five leads (Olivia, Molly, Nathaniel, Ferris, and David). There's a lot of things that can be done to shrink that timeline, and it will be discussed in more detail with whoever is cast. However, if there's going to be a major conflict with this (admitedly vague) schedule that you think might prevent you from participating in the project now would be the time to tell me.

Other than that, thank you everyone! This is going to be great.

  • Character Added and change to deadlines.

Oh look, what's this? A character's been added? After thinking long and hard about it, I've decided to open Olivia for auditions. I'm also going to be pushing the deadline on the audition back for two weeks just for her. Other characters will start casting on the 30th as originally planned. Thank you for all your hard work!

  • A few weeks left!

Hey everyone who's auditioned so far. I've heard some amazing stuff! As I'm finishing up the scripts, some interestings things have started coming to mind.

So that being said....if you're willing to play an extra, I would like to either hear an extra audition or get a little message so that I know you're up for it. I'm going to need at least one teacher, and some high school students.

If you've only auditioned for one role, I highly encourage auditioning for another. I'd really like to wsee what people are capable of.

I'm also opening up the role of Serena to male voices. I had an idea, and I want to see what might happen. I'm curious.

    As before, thanks everyone!

  • New Video Added

You'll notice a video now giving the general mood of the project, some storyboards, and a quick glimpse of some of the writing. I hope this gets you more pumped, because it did for me!

  • Changed Deadline

Please note that the deadline has been pushed out a month. There are a few factors that made this seem like a good idea. I hope it allows time for even MORE awesome auditions.

For various reasons, I've decided to open up Olivia.

19, raised in nobility. Freshman in college. Slightly sheltered in some ways, but also vastly knowledgeable in the

politics of nobility and playing “the game.” Has pretty much had anything she’s ever wanted, so she doesn’t always know how to deal when things don’t go her way. Generally genteel voice that can also be commanding. Tends to pause a lot in her speech, but her syllables are very precise. Also tends to get longwinded.

  • ...well, by then Nate was already someone who I wouldn't want to be without. It sounds, odd, I suppose, from the outside, but I learned to love him. And I do. And it's genuine. And I'm happy.

  • [confused and desperate] So supplements aren't good enough? ...But, the supplements have all the nutrition you would need, right?...[pausing] I don't understand.

  • Everything I've ever done and will ever do is a reflection on this family. I've had to be perfect, and now you do, too. Come to terms with that as soon as you can, but in the meantime, remember that you're not the only one with a whole new set of expectations to live with. I went from being the doted on only child to the oldest child in basically a day. So when you mess up, and you will and it won't be entirely your fault, I'm the one that takes the blame because I'm the older sister and you're my responsibility.

16, grade 10, raised in a single parent home with her mother recently dying. Olivia’s half sister by their noble father. Left home after her mother’s passing to live with her biological father and his family. Generally an average teenager, slightly more mature due to extra responsibilities put upon her growing up. Fairly practical. Has had a lot of life changing stuff in a short amount of time, but is trying to hold it together. Generally feminine tone, but not soft-spoken. Not particularly sharp-tongued, but drifts toward sarcastic on occasion about certain things. Squeaks when she’s angry.

  • [slightly sarcastic] No, it’s fine. I’m glad being a bastard child has made me so utterly popular here. You come to gawk at me on your lunch break, as well?

  • [angry] Embarrass you! You think I’m going to embarrass you!? What do you take me for some kind of country bumpkin who doesn’t know anything? When I found out that I was coming to live here hi on the hill, you know what I did? I went to the library. I looked up etiquette books. I started learning the important heraldry for the duchy....I know what side the damn shrimp fork goes on. I can’t….I can’t do this. I’m going to bed.

  • You know, I just thought about that. I can actually go to college, can’t I? That was never really an option before, but now, if Father’s willing to pay for it….Hmmmm...

upper 40’s-early 50’s. Proper gentleman and a fine man. Let’s his wife handle the homely things so that he can be a busy businessman outside the house. Tries to be fatherly, but generally fails miserably. Won’t ever be seen on-screen fully, so the voice really has to carry the weight of the characterization.

  • You’re as pretty as your mother. I’m glad to have you here, Molly….I want you to know that we welcome you here with open arms. You'll always be a part of this family.

  • That’s my final decision and that’s that. I won't stand for dissent under my roof.

26, Olivia’s betrothed. Also raised in nobility, he and Olivia were arranged to be married to one another when she was 9 and he was 13. They’ve known each other their whole lives. Booksmart (as one ought to be), but can be emotionally and socially dense. Understands that his life has been planned for him, and is pretty much okay with that.

  • How is she doing? I noticed she’s been spending a lot of time with that Oliard [o-lee-ard] fellow. He comes from a good family, but I hope his influence is good for her….Well, she is going to be my sister-in-law after all. Of course I want to see after her well being...By the way, when are you going to start wearing the ring.

  • Ollie, love, why are you getting yourself so worked up over this? As far as I can tell this is between Molly and that little...community she's part of. I don’t think you should get so involved. It could be dangerous.

  • [angry, desperate] What do you want me to do, Olivia? It’s not exactly in our hands anymore. Our parents made a decision, and we have to abide by it. That’s how things are.

20, Ferris’s boyfriend. Middle class. Taking some time off school to work. Not really into the game of social politics but has been dragged into it against his will for various reasons. More interested in just minding his own business and doing what he needs to do. Soft spoken, but not shy, more academic. Tends to get flustered when angry, until he just goes quiet.

  • Uh, no, the straight to university route is for the wealthy. I took a gap year to save money for school, and well, the one gap year turned to two, but I like my job, so we’ll see.

  • Oh, no I can’t do this. I’ve never faced the tribunal before. I mean, I know I didn’t do anything wrong, but...oh nooo. Beryl's gonna have my head on a platter.

  • Look, I...I did what I thought I was supposed to! It’s not my fault that someone higher up than me in the chain of command didn’t do their job. I’m….I’m just low man on the totem pole. I’m not anything...

mid-upper 30’s. Friend of Molly’s deceased mother. Very “cool aunt,” the one that brings you booze underage, but you’re only allowed to drink it in their house. Boisterous. Sometimes comes across as uneducated, and will be the first to set you straight in that regard.

  • I miss her, too love. But, you know, I believe in the afterlife. And I know she’s lookin’ down on you and she’s watchin' and she’s smilin’ at the proper young thing you’re becomin’. And she loves you just as much as she ever did.

  • [slightly drunk] and then….snrk…and then I look out the window and I see this little bit up at the top of the hill, in her bloomers and undershirt, and she just takes off down the hill on her bicycle. And I turns to Lena and I say “Lena, when’d Molly learn to ride a bicycle.” And Lena goes stark white looks at me dead in the face and says “Molly DOESN’T know how to ride a bicycle.” Then she goes racin’ outside and and I go runnin’ after, and what do we both see, flyin’ off the edge of the gulley, but the bike but no Molly. So that was the first time she broke her arm.

  • Didn’t think I’d ever actually see you again. It’s been awhile…..You gonna say something or do I get the silent treatment, as well?

There’s going to be a few instance of throwaway characters. Olivia’s friends, kids at school, that sort of general thing. You only have to do the lines you want. Or just come up with stuff. A lot of that hasn't been quite written, yet. I'll probably snag at least 2 female voices and a male voice for this.

  • [young woman] Oh no I really like her! She’s cute. I wish I had a little sister like her.

  • [man] Um, ma’am, you can’t go in there. They’re having a meeting of the tribunal, and non-participants can’t go in. Ma’am. Ma’am, stop hitting me. That hurts.

  • [teenager] I heard she’s from some town out in the Nowheres….She’s a “surprise baby” isn’t she? You can totally see it written all over her face.

18, grade 12, half-elf, friend and schoolmates with Molly. Raised as nobility, but was allowed a lot more freedom than his older siblings (second youngest of 5) due to his own illegitimacy. Extremely outgoing. Friendly, but also earnest, needs to work on his filter sometimes. Goes from nothing to angry and back again very quickly.

  • Hmph, like I’d waste my time gawking at a dull little thing like you. No, I just wanted to come by and meet my replacement….oh, because I’m an illegitimate, too, but since I’m graduating this year, you get to be the new focal point of their awe and disgust.

  • [angry] Father, I’m not having this conversation with you again. You don’t get to just decide that I’m actually part of “the family line” when it’s convenient for you. I’m going out. [immediately fine] Oh hey, buttercup! What are you doing on this side of town.

  • David, hey, you listen to me. You get in there, and you give that cranky asshole what for. You hear me? Alright? You’ve got this! Okay. I love you. Go in there and make it happen.

upper 40’s. Prim and proper socialite. Stereotypical noble wife. Micromanages the house. Breeds show dogs as her part-time work. Won’t ever be seen on-screen fully, so the voice really has to carry the weight of the characterization.

  • Make sure she goes to greet her father this afternoon, please, Olivia, dear.

  • Oh yes, we met with them, and we decided that we would just handle that sort of thing for you. No need to get involved with those...riff raff. We’re all you need.

middle-aged, 40’s-50’s. Their gender’s still to be determined in that, it wasn’t imperative to the story, so it could be whatever. There’s no art for them yet, so it’ll get matched to the voice. I think it’ll be interesting to see what people come up with.

Commanding, is at the almost top of a complex hierarchy, and, therefore, is accustomed to managing a large group of people. Is generally, just, tired of your shit. Not mean, necessarily, but has to be the “bad guy” sometimes to get stuff done. Only appears in one episode.

  • I don’t know who fouled up, and, at this point, I don’t care. I just want to know who’s planning on fixing it and how. We can’t run a system like ours if people aren’t doing their job the way they’re supposed to. We have a hierarchy for a reason, damnit!

  • You live in my region. I’m responsible for you. If you’re not willing to play by the rules, then you’re out. I’m not saying that to be mean. It’s just the way it has to be.
