Octopath Traveler Episode 1 (Primrose's Path)

Octopath Traveler Episode 1 (Primrose's Path)

Project Overview

Ever since I got the game from XBox Game Pass library, I've fallen in love to this game and for some reason I started from Primrose's path. Probably because my main job on FFXIV is Dancer among some other jobs, and when I saw Primrose is a Dancer as a base job, I just had to start on her path. So I though, why not make a fandub project out of it! Now I won't include ALL the minor/extra roles, just the main and supportive ones for this episode. I will however provide the script for the rest of the roles, that might be minor ones for now, but will play bigger part later in the game. Also to clarify, Octopath Traveler is owned by Square-Enix. I do not own anything in the game, I just wanted to do a FANDUB project of this marvelous game!

The other roles not mentioned here can be found at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/142W-iDpQEbNjFaetat4N_huACrDxQhHYEGWcm0kL7-c/edit?usp=sharing

    As much as it pains me, I have to let this project go for now. Due the fact I had to install Windows 11 on my PC, I no longer have proper video editor. Until I find proper editor that's as easy to understand as my Vegas Pro editor, this project will be on hiatus for now. I don't know when I will re-open this role with more roles but we have to see about that when I get myself proper, working video editor. I'm terribly sorry about this, but it was beyond my power to prevent this happening. I should have backup my files, but due the excitement of new Windows OS, I forgot to do that. ^^;

With the death of her father, the loss of her home, and the persistent disgrace Helgenish brought upon her while she worked at Sunshade, Primrose was forced to mature quickly. She takes it upon herself to enact revenge on the people who took her father's life. The only thing on her mind is vengeance, and she is willing to endure anything just to get leads on the men that ruined her life—from the jeers of the other dancers, the cat-calling of her customers, and the abuse and the dishonor Helgenish gives her on a daily basis.

Yusufa had described Primrose as a woman of few words, one that never discloses anything about herself. She acts aloof and distant from other people by locking up her true desires and feelings, for the sake of keeping up the act that pleased her previous master. However, Yusufa finds her likable either way. Primrose is also mentioned to be courageous and righteous, always standing up for Yusufa when no one else did. She was even bold enough to anger Helgenish by nearly escaping the tavern in pursuit of the man who bore the mark of the crow on his left arm.

Primrose is also noted to be a good actor. She would constantly put up the façade of an ignorant and obedient woman, when in truth she despised every moment she spent under the watchful eye of her employer. She has very good control over her emotions, rarely raising her voice even when she's feeling intense rage, although her emotional control still has its limits such as when Helgenish stabs Yusufa, her only friend during her days working for him. As Yusufa is dying, she tells Primrose that until then, she had never heard her (Primrose) shout. Above all else, Primrose is cunning and ruthless for the sake of searching for the men that killed her father but still has a kind enough heart to put the well-being of others before her own and to not willingly endanger innocent lives for the sake of her revenge.

Behind her aloof, seductive demeanour, Primrose is a very sad and lonely woman. The murder of her loving father left her with an empty feeling in her heart, and she notes to herself that the pain of the abuse she endures while working for Helgenish is nothing compared to the pain of losing him. Simeon, the man marked by the crow on his neck, eventually deduces (accurately) that Primrose's quest for vengeance against him and his two associates for killing her father, is really desperation to find peace from the loss she feels and the loneliness that comes with it. Simeon's chilling question as to whether Primrose felt any contentment when she killed his associates temporarily breaks her, as she realises that Simeon is right and avenging her father's death will do nothing to ease her suffering.

On the other hand, the suffering Primrose has endured in her life allows her to be more empathetic to the plights of others, as she is very kind and gentle to those who aren't targets of her anger despite being slow to socialize. She shows a more relaxed and playful side during much of her Travel Banter with the party, flirting with them in jest. As such, she seems to open up much more easily around those she considers friends. Over the course of her journey with the other travelers, she comes to the realization that she is not alone anymore, and that having companions gives her strength and courage.

  • [through narration] "Watch over me, Father... That day, I swore revenge against the men who took you from me. The three marked by the crow. My once-proud house fallen, I left home far behind, following their trail. ...That trail has led me here. I heard one of them often passes through here on his travels. It was the smalled scrap of hope--but it was all I had. Until I find him, there is no disgrace I will not endure. Losing my honor is nothing compared to the pain of losing you. Father...I will not stop until I find the three and see justice served. And until I avenge you... I will dance."

  • "Thank you, Yusufa. But there's no need for you to make foes on my behalf."

  • [seductively/flirty to Well-heeled Gentleman] "Admit it, now. Wouldn't you care to spend a little more time with me?"

Helgenish is an utter brute who enslaves the dancers and regularly abuses, brutalizes, and demeans them with every opportunity he can, insisting they call him "master". All those who displease him are viciously beaten to near-death by him and tossed into the gutter to die. He also often refers to them, especially Primrose, as cats. Despite this, he is shown to speak very nervously in the presence of Rufus.

  • [shouting angrily] "Do I keep you women to titter here in the shadows? My customers are waiting for their entertainment! The opening act should be on that stage already. Now, get out there and earn your keep!"

  • [slaps Primrose into her face, making Primrose staggering backwards in pain, to her coldly.] "What happened to your sweet little smile? Who puts a roof over your head, and food on your plate? Who bought the jewels that adorn your pretty neck? Who made you the most sought-after dancer in this dusty old town? It was me--all me. You owe me, kitten. And I'll see that debt repaid."

  • [taken by surprise while talking with Rufus (the hooded Left-hand Man with the crow insignia on his left arm)] "I-I can assure you, m'lord, I am doing all that I can--"

Yusufa is normally kind, but when seeing an injustice she is shown to stand up to people. She is also shown to be friendly, as she managed to befriend Primrose, a cold and closed-off girl who was constantly ostracized by the other dancers.

  • [angrily to the other dancers.] "Don't you think that's enough already? Do you take such pleasure in others' pain? We're nothing but the master's playthings--all of us! And we all know what happens to the girls who displease him. Or have you forgotten? Beaten half to death and tossed in the gutter. Left for dead, sick and starving."

  • [to Primrose, clapping, in awe] "Bravo, Prim. That was a performance for the ages." [disgusted] "How do you do it? I want to vomit every time I have to call him "Master".

  • [after Primrose got stopped by Helgenish when she tried to chase after "Left-handed Man" (Rufus), but got told to get back to work and seeing Primrose flustered/disappointed] "Look, Prim. Maybe you don't tell me what you're thinking. But that doesn't matter to me. I'm on your side and always will be. When the other girls would pick on me, and tell me to know my place... You were always the only one who stood by me. You never say much... You're always so distant. Aloof, even. But I know you just don't want to burden others with your troubles. I know you better than you think, Prim. And I know that, deep down, you have a good heart."

Rufus (Left-handed Man)

In contrast with the brutish Helgenish, Rufus is a fairly polite man and is capable of respecting the prowess of others. He acknowledges that Geoffrey Azelhart was a skilled and intelligent man who wasn't easy to bring down, and offers his respect to Primrose after she defeats him in battle. Nevertheless, his manner of speaking is subtly patronizing, betraying a haughty personality beneath his polite exterior. His respect for others' prowess is balanced by his confidence in his own abilities, telling Primrose that she is not the first person to stand up to him, nor will she be the last. Ironically, he is eventually defeated and killed by Primrose.

Rufus is a practical man, and is the only one of the Crow Men to tell Primrose that there was a practical motive to murder her father, beyond Albus' ambition to make more money from joining a criminal organization or Simeon's sadistic delight in ruining others' lives — namely, that her father had discovered classified information about the Obsidians that was strictly forbidden to outsiders. In the post-game, it is eventually revealed that the classified information Geoffrey had discovered and was murdered for discovering, was the Gate of Finis and the Obsidians' ultimate goal to resurrect Galdera.

  • [in the flashback where Primrose was just a young child that witnessed her Father Geoffrey Azelhart's death, Rufus talking to Geoffrey] ""Funny how it works, isn't it? Everything that happens in this world falls into one of two neat little categories. Things one's better off knowing, and things one's better off...not. Geoffrey Azelhart, I'm afraid you've been poking your nose into the latter."

  • [before leaving from the Sunshade Tavern] "...And if that's all, I'll be taking my leave."

  • [while talking to Helgenish] "You will bring the women I need--won't you, now? Competent help is so hard to come by these days. Whatever is a man to do?"
