Middle - Old Age Male w/Jewish/Yiddish Accent Needed ASAP for Radio Show

Project Overview

Brief Intro:

My name is Crystal Genduso and I am the producer of a children's public access program, called Bedtime Story, which was recently approved to air on RadioFairfax. One of the upcoming stories which will be featured in our winter holiday themed episode (#4), is "The Forgotten Hanukiyah" (see: http://www.ourjewishcommunity.org/learn/holidays/hanukkah/a-hanukkah-childrens-story/). I thought it would be fun to have a character actor perform the lines of the more mature, male, menorah. There is no time to waste, as the show is scheduled to air on December 3rd.

Requirements:

You must have a reasonably good microphone, a pop filter, and a suitable place to record. You can find tutorials online on how to use household materials to make a pop filter and a sound-proof room/or box (I use my closet - clothes make for inexpensive insulation). This is a one-time role.

About the Show:

Bedtime Story Broadcast was originally conceived of to provide children, particularly ones who are blind, dyslexic, or whose parents are likewise disabled or illiterate, w/a bedtime story, but we believe everyone of all ages will enjoy the show. It features unadulterated fairy/folktales that bear little resemblance to the sanitized Disney versions of today. A narrator reads them aloud to listeners, like an audiobook.

About the Project:

This show is a co-operative effort; each aspect is crowd sourced. The level of involvement is up to the individual. We offer opportunities, which are open to all ages, for: actors, animators, composers, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, singers, and writers to obtain exposure, in exchange for contributing content. Everything else is in exchange for experience. Note that volunteers need not live anywhere near Virginia. This is a very valuable investment, which will pay off when people see it on your college application or on your resume. If you are interested in participating in the project, as a content contributor or a constant collaborator, I can be contacted at [redacted]. Thank you for your time.

The part must be played by a middle-to-old age sounding male w/a Jewish accent. Imagine you are a Rabbi explaining the significance of a menorah to preadolescent. Do not read between the brackets; those are your direction on how to deliver the line.

  • [thoughtfully] A long time ago, in a land far from here, there lived a people whose nation was under foreign rule. In time, the foreign rulers became crueler and they forced the people to adopt a new religion. But the people would not have it. They believed in freedom and that no once could force another how to think or believe. They tried everything to convince the foreign rulers that freedom was important to them. But nothing worked. • Finally, from among the people a small army arose who were willing to fight for freedom. (Though fighting is not the best way to solve a problem, in this situation it was the only way.) Because of their courage, dedication, and belief that what they were fighting for was right, they eventually won. After winning the war, these people rededicated their temple – and held a celebration which lasted eight days. [Pause]

  • [pause] You are very observant little one [pause] The extra candle holder – which is taller than the rest is for a special candle called the shamash – which is lit first and used to light the other candles. [pause] Gesuntichgt ! [pronounced gay-shoon-tight]Remember [pause for narration] always keep your head high and your arms outstretched, because we are very important – we help Jews to celebrate their holiday of freedom and courage.
