- Hard to explain without going in-depth. The series takes place in the fictional land of Nosgoth—a dark, Gothic fantasy setting—and revolves around Kain's quest to defy his fate and restore balance to the world. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver introduced another antihero protagonist, Raziel; the adventures of both characters culminate in Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Themes of destiny, free will, morality, redemption and the hero's journey recur in the storyline, which was inspired by ancient literature, horror fiction, Shakespeare's plays and Gnosticism. The Legacy of Kain games have enjoyed critical success, particularly receiving praise for high-quality voice acting, narrative, and visuals, and, as a whole, had sold over 3.5 million copies as of 2007. In 2015, a sequel has been confirmed as "50/50"

"The Pillars choose their guardians from birth, Raziel – and vampires are no longer born.
This is the crux of our dilemma.
And this is the terrible irony – with their vampire purge, the members of the Circle have assaulted the very architects of the Pillars they are sworn to protect.
They have embarked on a treacherous path. With every vampire they kill, the humans are slitting their own throats."―Janos Audron — LISTEN
In the Legacy of Kain series, The Pillar Guardians also known as the Circle of Nine are the order of sorcerers whose duty it is to guard the Pillars of Nosgoth, a Tenth Guardian existed; Janos Audron who wasn't tasked with serving a pillar but rather the key that would restore the pillars, the Soul Reaver. The Circle of Nine were a group of individuals, chosen from birth to wield the powers of the Pillars of Nosgoth. Each Pillar had a single 'Guardian', and that person was symbiotically bound to it, as the living embodiment of the force it represented. That individual was also bound to the other eight Guardians. Together, the Circle functioned as a single entity, with the Balance Guardian as "the hub, the still point around which all the other Pillars principles turn". It seems the role of the Balance Guardian was to regulate the energies of the Pillars to keep Nosgoth stable and healthy. When the Pillars were raised, the original nine Guardians along with the tenth secret Guardian were Vampires. Since vampires could no longer reproduce, a result of the Hylden curse, they would turn any new Human guardians that were called to serve into vampires. This tradition continued until Moebius and Mortanius, who had been called to serve as Guardians of Time and Death, revolted against them and claimed the Pillars for humankind.

Vampires were, alongside the humans and the Hylden, one of the three sapient races dominant in Nosgoth. Though the original, Ancient Vampires were a species in their own right, the term "vampire" eventually came to refer to any individual afflicted with the blood curse, irrespective of birth. Vampirism comprised an extremely eclectic heritage which spanned many generations and sub-races across history, but with common traits: usually, vampires needed to consume blood regularly to survive, were immortal and sterile, were vulnerable to water and sunlight, developed individual abilities and dark gifts, and would drastically evolve over time.

The Vampire Hunters were the warrior class of Nosgoth's remaining humans during the Soul Reaver era, and distant successors to the Sarafan and Moebius's mercenary army. Dedicated to eliminating the land's now-dominant vampire population, they were headquartered in the northerly Human Citadel.

But no – I do not hate them."―Janos Audron — LISTEN
