Bashful Series [18+]

Project Overview

PLEASE DON'T ALTER THE LINES IN YOUR AUDITION. THIS IS AN AUDIOBOOK -- YOU WILL NEED TO READ THE LINES AS THEY ARE WRITTEN. IF YOU ALTER THE LINES IN ANY WAY WITHOUT AT LEAST FIRST INCLUDING A TAKE WITH THE LINE AS IT IS WRITTEN, I WILL LIKELY NOT LISTEN TO YOUR AUDITION! I'M NOT USUALLY VERY STRICT OR PICKY, BUT THIS IS A POINT THAT I AM BOTH ON.

Note that audition lines/deadline and character descriptions may be subject to abrupt changes.
This call has been merged with the 2nd call in an attempt to maximize audition returns.

Explainer video links to the original version of Knock, which is going to be redone. Just as an example.

I wrote three stories a few months back, starting with a short story, and ending in two ten-chapter novellas. They wound up being pretty popular -- the two novellas are my most popular works to date. I found this funny, because I thought the first novella was boring to write. But, I digress.
I plan to continue the series with a few more short stories and novellas, and thought it would be a fun time-passer to
turn them into dramatized audiobooks.

This project will be kind of slow-going, but I do hope to complete every story in the series. If I change my mind, I will of course post an update and/or change the title to make everyone aware of it. But, for the meantime, here's a casting call to see who's interested in helping me bring these suspense stories to life. ;)

Best start with the current story descriptions and any remarkable details:

Knock (http://archiveofourown.org/works/10570485)
Stacey is 20 years old and lives by herself. Yet, she can't help but
feel like the bumps she hears in the night aren't figments of her
imagination . . .

Words: 1454 (1 chapter)
Rating: Teen

Polarity (http://archiveofourown.org/works/10691658)

Australian artist Max Aleshire doesn't belong in Boston. The
weather's too cold for him, as are the people. With only one friend,
ex-girlfriend Stacey, he's become an introverted, socially paranoid
recluse. He's convinced the loneliness and mundane routine are there to
stay until Stacey dares him to make a friend online. By chance, he meets
a handsome stranger: a writer named Cameron, with whom he has a lot in
common. Inspired by this former introvert, Max attempts to open up and
improve his life. First off, he lets Cameron in, certain that he's a
good guy. After only a few days, he's surprised to discover that he
might be developing feelings for this stranger—for another man!

Little
does Max realize, though, that there's a much darker side to Cameron.
If love is blind, then Max might not see the danger he's in until it's
too late. If he does, will he care?

A fictional suspense novella by Noëlle McHenry about a lonely young man who finds himself trapped in a dangerous love game.
Words: ~25k (10 chapters)
Rating: Explicit (due to sexual content)

Ignore the Camera (http://archiveofourown.org/works/9520076)
Val Kozel wants to people to know him. That's why he started a vlog, and soon began streaming. Through this, he met his best friend, August Lund. Together, they work to reach internet fame as a gaming duo. In early October of 2018, they take a request to play a supposedly-cursed indie game so they can debunk it. What they don't realize is that disproving the game's curse might not be so simple. Soon enough, Val regrets having even downloaded the game at all. Unfortunately, his fans are oblivious to his terror. It's so close to Halloween, that they think it's nothing more than an elaborate, dramatized event...
Words: ~24k (10 chapters)
Rating: Explicit (due to sexual content and violence/gore)

No Worries (https://archiveofourown.org/works/13259775)
Max prepares himself to express his love for Stacey, his girlfriend of
three years, at a New Year's party. Love is difficult for him as an
introvert, but he's finally ready to give her the love she deserves.
Unfortunately, things don't always go as planned.

There are a few more stories to be added, so this call will be added onto occasionally with new roles.

Each audiobook is intended to have full narration, character voices, and (possibly) sound effects when applicable. I'm treating this more as an audio drama sort of deal, I suppose. Each chapter will be posted separately to YouTube and Soundcloud, but in one huge playlist. Actors (and narrator) will be credited in the descriptions. I can plug websites and/or social media links next to names if requested. Either when you first e-mail me or when I request it, please tell me the name you'd like to be credited by, and any links you want included with your credit.

Lastly, I'm not making any profit off of these audiobooks, since I intend for them to be free. I'm not a YouTube partner, either. Not that YouTube would probably even allow me to monetize these anyway, considering their policies on de-monetization based on content and whatnot. Ha ha.
So, unfortunately, no payment here. Actors and narrators get nothing more than experience and possibly recognition if these somehow get big. Hopefully you find it interesting!

Also, if you have any talents (like composing or audio editing), and you're interested in volunteering to help me out somehow, feel free to message and/or e-mail me and we can discuss!

Requirements:
- Good quality audio is preferred for actors. You aren't likely to be cast if your audio is: too quiet, too loud (peaking), noisy/unclear (lots of background noise).
- Dedication. I would prefer for actors not to drop out of the project after I cast them. Do not audition if you are unsure about whether you can stick with it for the long haul.
- Emotion. The characters aren't robots -- be lively and express some feeling!
- This project requires a little bit of crying and screaming.
- This project contains swearing, violence, gore, (homo)sexual content (some characters may need to make some "18+" noises), and rather dark subject matter including stalking, murder, attempted rape, and kidnapping. See the story links above for list of tags. You shouldn't audition if you aren't comfortable with scenes regarding these subjects.
- I send scripts through e-mail. I don't care if you have a Skype or a Discord -- I will only contact you through e-mail. When cast, please e-mail me ASAP so we can get the ball rolling! (E-mail: sticklover4 [at] gmail [dot] com)

MAIN ROLE
Voice type: Any, but preferably serious and, at times, intense. Has to build a sense of tension. No stuttering or mumbling.

The narrator will read all 21 (Knock = 1, Polarity = 10, Ignore The Camera = 10) chapters in full. Clips from actors will be added into the narration, replacing lines read by the narrator. I don't want to do this myself since I feel it would be better go get someone else to do it, but I will if no one who fits the requirements bites.

  • Stacey's eyes flew open once more. She wanted to get up, but found herself petrified. Paranoia flooded her with a barrage of ideas that, albeit foolish, left her terrified. The most prominent was that an intruder had broken into her home, making the loud noise by accident. If she were to stand up, she knew that her floorboards would creak; the second floor was especially prone to this. If her floorboards creaked, the intruder would know that she was awake -- or worse yet: exactly where she was.

  • She was really dead, wasn't she? The pictures from Cameron were true, and not some sort of sick joke. Stacey was gone. He'd only just started to feel friendly with her. Had Cameron killed her? That was what threw him for a real loop: Cameron's involvement. He had pictures, and he seemed calm... if not pleased. Cameron was the nicest, most generous man that Max had ever met, and now he'd killed a woman!

  • When he finished all the wine in his glass, Cameron exhaled and put it down. Then, he leaned back in his chair and gazed at Max. He said nothing. For a long moment, both of them were dead silent and staring at each other. Then, without warning, Cameron uttered, "You know, Val reminds me a lot of you."

**Before auditioning for this role, see "Bashful Bunny" below. I would prefer the two characters to have the same actor, as Max voices Bashful in the story, so please audition for both!
MAIN ROLE (in Polarity), SUPPORTING ROLE (in Ignore The Camera)
Voice type: Medium-ish, but at the moment I'm open to any. Preferrably an Australian accent, but this isn't required.

Max is a digital artist and a mild recluse. He isn't much of a people person, and tends to just stay in his room all day.

  • (quipping) Yeah, well, just because I'm my own best friend doesn't mean that I'm mentally unhinged, Stace.

  • (livid/upset) You never discussed this with me! Do you think I'm okay with this? Didn't you realize that I was right fucking there, watching you? This is fucked up, even for you, Cameron! Even for you!

  • [Max is one of the characters with sexual scenes, so please give me your best orgasm. (Aaaand here's a sentence to add to a list of "things I never thought I would type in a Casting Call line".)]

MAIN ROLE (in Knock), SUPPORTING ROLE (in Polarity), SUPPORTING ROLE (in No Worries)
Voice type: Medium-ish. Either Boston accent or general North American one (former preferred).

Stacey is Max's ex-girlfriend. She's somewhat bossy and whiny. She nags Max about his refusal to get a more reliable job, but only because she worries and cares about him. She wants to mend her strained friendship with him, but isn't sure how to do so. In a way, she's a lot like a worried mother type of character.

Total auditions: 2

  • (nervously laughing, scolding her cat) Bad, Mittens. You scared me half to death!

  • (sarcastic, to Max) [You're p]erfectly healthy? How many
times have you talked to yourself in the past twenty-four hours? I mean,
like, really had a conversation with yourself, aloud? If the answer is
anything higher than zero, then I’d argue that you’re far from healthy,
    bud.

  • (sincere) You know, I've missed you, Max. We don't hang out
as much as we used to. That sucks, because you're my best friend. I know
I'm annoying sometimes, (at this point her voice starts to crack from
emotion) and that I have a tendency to want what's best for my friends a
little bit too aggressively, but . . .

SUPPORTING ROLE (in Polarity and Ignore The Camera)
Voice type: Medium-low-ish. Smooth and suave.

Cameron expresses himself at first as an innocent writer, but as the story progresses, he begins to show his true colors. In truth, Cameron is manipulative, abusive, and enjoys killing for sport. He's good with computers, and uses hacking techniques to stalk his victims from a safe distance before he strikes. All the while playing innocent and kind.

  • (friendly/supportive) Hear me out. You might think that people will think you're weird for [complimenting them], but believe me when I say that people love to be noticed. If you make them feel welcome by starting a small conversation or by complimenting them, I promise you that nothing bad will come of it. You'll feel better, they'll feel better, and who knows -- you might even make someone's day.

  • (scolding/sincere) What's the matter with you? I only want to talk! I didn't come all this way to hurt you, alright? I'd never hurt you.

  • (dark/malicious) When's your birthday, Mr. Lund? [August answers "June 19th", which is a bad answer] Happy Doomsday.

MINOR ROLE (in Polarity)
Voice type: Medium-low-ish. Cheery, but not necessarily fluent in English. Any non-English accent accepted, but something along the lines of Indian would be preferred.

Mr. Diefenbach runs the convenience store that Max frequents. He's a happy, friendly guy. He's still struggling to learn English, but doesn't let the language barrier stop him from being a good clerk.

  • (friendly) For you, I give discount! Chips: free!

  • (happy) My granddaughter, she getting married soon. So proud of her.

  • (concerned) I heard last night, noises from you, above me. Screams, sounded like pain. Creaking, and crying too. Are you okay?

EXTRA ROLE (in Polarity), MAIN ROLE (in Ignore the Camera)
Voice type: Medium-ish. Light Ukrainian (or Russian) accent (mandatory, former preferred). **Note that he speaks in Ukrainian a few times.**

Val is a Ukranian streamer and speed-runner. He streams alongside his best friend, August, who he lives with in Pittsburgh. He's generally witty, but much less of a skeptic than August is. He's sensitive and caring. When he isn't streaming or joking around with August, he tends to be somewhat serious. He likes people, and wants to be popular online.

Total auditions: 2

  • (reasoning) Kas, we owe it to the audience after last night.
If the game pulled itself out of a softlock, then we might as well give
    it one last shot, right?

  • (playful/scolding) [My hair is] auburn, zhopa.

MAIN ROLE (in tba), MAIN ROLE (in Ignore the Camera), SUPPORTING ROLE (in tba)
Voice type: Medium to medium-low. Danish (or Dutch, Swedish, or German) accent (mandatory. Danish preferred). **Note that he speaks in Danish a few times.**

August is a Danish video game streamer. He streams alongside his best friend, Val, who he lives with in America. He's comedic in a wry sort of way. He's hard to scare, and is generally rather skeptical. He cares for Val, and would protect him with his life, but isn't afraid to tease him when he feels he's getting spooked too easily.

Total auditions: 1

  • That would be a nightmare. Being there, even as a kid. If it
were real, you know. I mean, picture it: you're four or five years old,
sitting around minding your own business, when in storms that
    pikhoved.

  • (through hysterical laughter) Oh my God, I can't believe it
let you use that! [Val asks what he named himself (in Danish) that's so
funny] (shrilled, still hysterical) Your name is 'ass-banana'!

Cast to J35T3R.
MINOR ROLE (in tbe), MINOR/SUPPORTING ROLE (in tbe)

Voice: Medium-ish. General North American accent. Sounds sort of flat and/or depressed, maybe.

I wasn't going to add Julian to the call, because I don't have much on him. I mean, I don't even have a surname for him yet. But I'll need his voice sooner than later, so I may as well add him now. His character might change dramatically. The audition lines are just ad-libs of things he might say.

Julian is Cameron's boyfriend in college. He's got some form of chronic depression, and may or may not indulge in marijuana. Because he's always cold, he's typically bundled in a few layers of sweater. He hardly talks to anyone, but has somehow taken a liking to Cameron. He winds up being Cameron's case study in behavioral psychology. He's sort of a deadbeat type, typically skipping his classes. Sometime before the end of his second or third year, he commits suicide somehow.

Total auditions: 1

  • (depressed) I'm not going to complain. I can't complain; I
mean, I'm in college. My parents paid good money to get me here, but . .
    . I just don't know anymore.

  • (slightly depressed/curious) Why are you with me, Cameron? A guy like you, with a loser like me . . . It doesn't make sense.

  • (low/sincere/about to take his own life) Cameron, I'm glad I met you.

EXTRA ROLE (in Ignore The Camera)
Voice type: Medium-high. Bouncy and enthusiastic, like an upbeat kid's cartoon protagonist. Australian accent (preferred).

Bashful is the product of Cameron's imagination, and the main antagonist of one of his novels. In Ignore The Camera, Max and Cameron bring the creepy anthropomorphic rabbit to "life" with a game and voice acting (done by Max himself). Bashful is cheery and optimistic, but he despises lies.

  • (enthusiastic) Hey, kids! Uncle Bashful here! So glad that you could all make it today, because I've got something special planned!

  • (somewhat frustrated, because he was lied to) That’s wrong. I'll let it slide for now, though.

  • (enthusiastic) Alright, everyone, wish Basil and I luck! Our adventure begins now!
