Johnny Backseed

Project Overview

The Johnny Backseed project (now Dead Air FM) has been one I've been working on for two years now before my junior year of High school. Now, going into my freshman year in college, I won't nearly have the time or resources to continue the series. My objective is to create a huge finale for the series.

The series takes the form of a radio station. In it are several quirky shows with their eccentric and silly hosts. Each segment is separated with several fun commercials. Shows parody genres such as news, music, cooking shows, gardening, advice, etc. The show is over the top and pokes fun at the world around us. A link to the latest episode is posted.

Despite myself covering many of the roles, I rely heavily on supporting characters. Each actor/actress will have several roles due to the sheer amount of characters. The audition process will cover some key elements I look for in an actor/actress that can help me determine if someone is capable of effectively portraying several different characters.

Some other important things to note are that punctuality is a huge factor as well as communication. A director losing contact with even one cast member is detrimental to the project. Replacing an actor/actress is hard and often leads to a drop in quality.  Therefore make sure to meet deadlines, and if a deadline is unattainable, arrangements must be made.

The project will be about 2 hours long and the deadline for completion will be absolutely no later than August 12. Actors usually get about 1-2 weeks for recording lines which has been proven more than enough time to complete everything, if not, alternative arrangements must be made.

More information to come if you are cast about specifics.

I assign characters based on the actor/actress. So through this audition process I want to get a feel for your versatility, acting ability, and creativity in portraying a character. One helpful tip that will help your overall audition is to be over the top, that is the key to the entire series. Don't suppress extreme emotion, rather be cartoony. If you are cast, I will assign you to several different characters that I feel you are fit for. It's important that you demonstrate your range so I can know that you're capable of portraying more than one character.

  • Read this monologue: http://freedrama.net/killfirst.html  do it to the best of your ability and being over the top. If you know of a better monologue or wish to use a different one, feel free to substitute this one for another.

  • Instructions for part two included in link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12B5UxXXQsp2rnhop_oAgcj5_sbNR7NIx6i103QwXmz8/edit?usp=sharing

  • Feel free to post a demo reel if available. If a reel is not available, post anything that shows off your range or versatility. Could be a character from another project (get permission first) or even an improvised piece.
