Middle Age
John Winchester was Sam and Dean's father, and son of Henry Winchester. Born in Normal, Illinois, he was four when his father disappeared.
John and Dean's Relationship
John and Dean Winchester shared a complicated father-son relationship, as well as a soldier-commander relationship. He raised Dean in the hunter lifestyle, as well as teaching him essential survival skills. Their relationship almost directly mirrors Michael and God's relationship.
John and Sam's Relationship
Sam and John Winchester have a Father-Son relationship as well as a soldier-commander relationship. Unlike Dean, Sam and John have had a very rocky relationship. This is mostly due to Sam questioning John's orders. Sam and John are also very similar to another. Dean has even told Sam this. Over time, Sam understands why John raised them the way he did. Their relationship almost directly mirrors Lucifer and God's relationship.

Got the call day before last. Guy I thought was dead-- guy I watched take two bullets point blank in '93--ain't.
Don't know how he came back, but I'm not surprised. Guy's named John Dee, and he's big time black magic.
Dee's on a first name basis with all the major players upstairs and down. Which means he might know what killed Mary.

(Sam: Really? Because I don't think she'd want any of this.)
(Sam: We shouldn't have been here.)
John: I know... I got caught up, I thought--
(Sam: You thought this time would be different. You always think this time'll be different.)
John: You gotta understand, Sam, your Mother--
