Inferiority Complex

Inferiority Complex

Project Overview

Greetings, fellow actors and actresses. :)

I'm working on a type of conversation with my self for a Personality Training Module at the acting school I attend. I've been struggling with perfectionism and an inferiority complex for quite some time when it comes to acting, and to be more free in my emotional expression and physical awareness I need to accept these thoughts and use them to my advantage instead of trying to fight them, breaking myself in the process.

As part of this project I decided to actually showcase for the class and the personality coach how these conversations in my head often go. (I sound quite psychologically broken here, trust me, it's not extremely bad.)

I'd like to see this state of mind appear as a different character, which is why I'm searching for someone to voice said character. And who knows, maybe it might actually help me out a bit.

The Inferiority Complex should not sound as menacing as it actually is. It should be a "normal" sounding voice. Paired with perfectionsim it is the part of the mind that tells you things like "You're not good enough." or "You made a mistake, therefore you are a failure". Otherwise, feel free to play around with how you think it would sound. The lines in brackets [ ] are the lines I will act live in front of the class, they are what the Inferiority Complex is reacting to, which is why I included them.

  • You can't take this job, you're not good enough. I mean, do you remember the last time you played a scene? I do. I remember you were terrible. And you have to be as good as Jake Gyllenhaal or Daniel Day-Lewis to be a good actor.

[It's a process, okay? I'm learning, and I'm getting better every day.]

No, there's no learning. There is no such thing as getting better. You're either great or terrible. You either do everything perfectly, or you're a failure.

[Do you realize how irrational you sound right now?]

Irrational? Ha. I'm the most rational person you will ever find. I'm perfect, unlike you. You see, I'm good at everything. I am what YOU should be.

[How can you say that about yourself? Why won't you ever let me say I'm good at something?]

Because you're not good enough to say that. Because you don't play piano as well as Peter Bence. Because you don't compose like Hans Zimmer. And most importantly, because you don't act as well as Jake Gyllenhaal.

  • Why would they even write to you? Actually, on that thought, why would any casting director ever write to you? You're a failure. You stay at home all day, every weekend, because you're too scared to go out make mistakes, you're not good enough at socializing, and you're awkward as hell.

[I'm not too scared to make mistakes, mistakes are great! They help me learn! If I made more mistakes I might not be as awkward. But you keep judging me for every single little thing I do wrong, and I don't like that!]

*confused, then angry* I judge you? No, I don't. I push you. I am what will make you excellent. I drink your milkshake. See that? That was Daniel Day-Lewis' line from There Will Be Blood, and I said it perfectly. Better than you could ever do it if you fought me off and sent me to some sort of mental jail of yours.

  • You're really trying to get rid of me, aren't you?

[No, I'm not trying to get rid of you. I like you, alright. You help me strive for excellence, and through all the things you've said, I see that. You just take it a bit too far.]

I do? I mean, I thought I was pushing you to great things.

[It was a too forceful though. Here, let me give you a hug.]

Hey, what are you...? Oh... Oh this is nice. I'm... I'm sorry. I think I'm going to tone all this down a bit, amigo.

Passion has a short appearance, before it is quickly shut down by the Perfectionism. Should be very enthusiastic and excited.

  • I think you should definitely take that job. It'll surely be fun.

  • Hey, what are you doing? You can't... (a hand is put over his/her mouth as she continues unintelligibly mumbling before he/she is pulled away)
