Heathers: The Musical
Project Overview
Veronica is part of the most popular clique at school, made up of Heather Duke, Heather McNamara and led by Heather Chandler. Tired of the way Heather Chandler bullies and controls everyone Veronica wishes she was dead so that she could free to do as she wants instead of what Heather Chandler wants. Veronica then meets J.D, a dark rebel, who says they should teach Heather Chandler a lesson by making her drink drain cleaner. Heather Chandler does and dies from chemical poisoning instantly. To cover up the murder J.D tells Veronica to write suicide note in Heather Chandler's handwriting. The cruelty and bullying doesn't stop however, as Heather Duke merely replaces Heather Chandler as leader, and her suicide is seen as glamorous and cool. J.D then tricks Veronica into shooting two of the football players, Kurt and Ram, who were harassing her, and covering it up with another suicide note that says they were secretly gay. Veronica becomes scared of J.D realizes that he intended to kill them while she just wanted to scare them. His next plan is to kill Heather Duke, but Veronica wants no part of it, so instead he plans to blow up the school, after everyone has sign a "petition" which is actually a group suicide note. Veronica shoots J.D forcing him to leave the bomb in the school and go outside where he then straps the bomb to himself. Veronica watches as he blows himself up, and then returns inside to confront Heather Duke. She tells Heather Duke "there's a new sheriff in town" and walks off talks to the school nerd, suggesting that she will now be leader of the school.

Mezzo-Soprano. 17. Burns to be both cool and kind, but doesn't yet know how to be both at the same time. Fierce sense of right and wrong, keen sense of ironic humor. Thinks she's an old soul, but she's still innocent enough to be blindsided by love or shocked by cruelty. Must have a high belt and have dynamic, stylistic range.

"And then there's the Heathers. They float above it all. Heather McNamara, head cheerleader. Her dad is loaded- he sells engagement rings. Heather Duke, runs the year book. No discernible personality, but her mom did pay for implants. Heather Chandler, the almighty. She is a mythic bitch. They're solid Teflon- never bothered, never harassed. I'd give anything to be like that.
Tenor. 17. Darkly charismatic, compelling, attractive. Charming on the outside, damaged on the inside. Keen smarts, savage wit. Must have strong, confident belt and wide emotional range.

Mezzo-Soprano. The richest, hottest, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it without fear, patience, or mercy. Must have a strong, high belt.

“I’m like oxygen. I’m everywhere. Really, Veronica. Sleeping with psycho trenchcoat kid? I will crucify you for this. Everyone in school ‘s gonna know good little Veronica Sawyer is nothing but a dirty whore .”
Alto. 17. The whipped beta dog of the three Heathers. Deeply insecure. When she finally becomes Queen Bee, she wields power like a bulldozer. Must have a strong belt.

Soprano. 17. Beautiful, innocent, stupid. Can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but is actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Must have a strong belt.

“He passed out. Me and Kurt and Ram and Heather Duke came out to pour a jug of Thunderbird on Heather‘s grave, y’know from her homies, but Kurt and Ram drank it all. Ram and Heather went off together, then Kurt started grabbing me and he wouldn’t stop.”
“My sort-of boyfriend killed himself because he was gay for his linebacker. And my best friend seem to have it all together, but she’s gone too. Now my stomach’s hurting worse and worse, and every morning on the bus I feel my heart beating louder and faster, and I’m like Jesus, I’m on the freakin’ bus again ‘cause on my ride to school are dead.”
Mezzo-Soprano. 17. Nicknamed "Martha Dumptruck," the opposite of confident and popular. Huge and beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Must have a strong belt and wide vocal expression.

Tenor. 17. Quarterback and captain. Chiseled, rude, entitled, cocky. He's the brains in the friendship with Ram. Must have a strong belt and some falsetto.

Soprano. 45 to 50. MS. FLEMING: Aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Resentful of today's entitled youth, protective of the underdogs. Despite a penchant for self-promotion, genuinely cares about the students in her charge. VERONICA'S MUM: Easygoing, distant, yet capable of laying down the law. Must have great belt.

“Our children are dying! What this school needs is a good old fashion rap session. I suggest we get everyone into the cafeteria and just talk. And feel. Together. Go ahead, laugh at the hippy, but I’m telling you we all misjudged Heather Chandler! Myself included!”
“Hello Westerberg! Welcome to our special assembly. I want you to ignore the television cameras and the news crew. They’re just here to document this significant moment: whether to kill yourself or not is one of the most important decisions a teenager can make. So you know what I’m gonna do right now?”
Baritone. 40 to 45. RAM'S DAD: Former football player turned suburban dad, has never outgrown his high school glory days. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. BIG BUD DEAN: JD's single dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. COACH RIPPER: Stalwart, man's man; quick to defend his platers. Must have strong country/gospel belt.

Tenor/Baritone. 30 to 45. KURT'S DAD: Straight-laced, very conservative, also former football player. A simple guy, not book smart, you'd be happy to share a beer with him. VERONICA'S DAD: Easygoing and distant. PRINCIPAL GOWAN: Rumpled, burned out, hates conflict. Must have strong gospel belt.
