G Gundam Abridged [OPEN] More Roles!

G Gundam Abridged [OPEN] More Roles!

Project Overview

An abridged series for G Gundam, though this is largely just an outlet for a hobby of video editing/creative writing on my end. This is not a journey to become famous on Youtube; it is intended to be a celebration of an anime I watched when I was younger and grew to admire for its cheesiness as an adult. So between you and I, potential voice artists, I hope this project can help you refine your talents as much as mine! And perhaps I can find other folks that share in what may loosely be called my sense of humor.

-This is going to be as clean-humored of an abridged series as I can make it. No sex jokes, no foul language--it's not my style. However, there will definitely be stereotyping rampant throughout, as the anime itself poked a lot of fun at different nationalities (Neo-Mexico's Tequila Gundam, for example). It is not out of hatred for any ethnicity that this type of humor will be included, but merely because it honors the spirit and source material of G Gundam. Please consider this if the thought of making jokes about ethnic stereotypes makes you uncomfortable.
-I plan on updating this post regularly, so be sure to check back every few days.
-If you want to contact me for other purposes other than auditioning, the preferred method is via email.

Recording and Contact information:
-Record as either .mp3 or .wav files preferably in 16-bit or 24-bit 44.1 kHz Stereo
-If for some reason you are unable to record in such a format, I'll accept the highest quality audition you can submit (basically if it sounds clean and crisp with minimal interference I'll be willing to consider it as an audition).
-Save the lines as "charactername_yourname_linenumber.mp3" (ex: domon_blackjoker_01.mp3)

The original forum post this casting call was derived from can be found here.

In the anime, Argo's voice isn't gruff or gnarly so I'l be biased towards that, but if someone does a spectacular job with a gravelly version I'll definitely consider it. I don't want his voice to be monotone. It should sound serious almost all of the time, even if what he's saying is funny or kind. Take, for example, this gem. His voice should definitely sound older than Domon, Chibodee, and George. Also, it should carry well--have a bit of a boom or loudness to it (at least when he's intense).

  • "I had a toothache, but you fixed it. As thanks I'm busting us outta here."

  • "I'll do whatever it takes to free my crew! I'll break their chains by breaking your arms! Haaaaaaa!"

George de Sand's butler and Gundam crew. A stately elder. Should sound like a butler--sophisticated and courteous--and like an old man.

  • (George: "You're not leaving me, Raymond?") "Wouldn't dream of it, sir." (George: "Of course not, Raymond. You're not paid to dream.") "I'm not paid at all, sir." (George: "And that is why you are my favorite butler.") "Quite."

The two monks that watch over Sai Saici. Mostly just authority figures for Sai Saici to disobey. Stick in the mud older guys. Same voice is fine, maybe make one higher than the other.

  • [Zuizen speaking] "We are sincerely reluctant to have to do this..." [Keiun speaking] "...but you've given us no alternative!" [in unison] "We are holding your female friend hostage!" (Domon: "Rain, initiate Plan Stockholm!" Rain: "Roger!") "What? You're just okay being held captive by us?" (Rain: "Oh, no no no. You're the ones being held captive by me."

Princess of Neo France. She is infatuated with George. She's also 14. So, young, bright, and bubbly female voice preferred. Should also be slightly bratty and annoying.

  • "You know what'd be a great idea? Kidnapping me! If I've learned anything in my life as a princess, it's that one surefire way to get a hero's attention is to be kidnapped. It usually has no negative consequences when I do it."

Argo's prison warden. She's mean, ruthless, and controlling. She likes to boss Argo around. Her voice should be somewhat nasally delivered. A more mature voice is preferred.

  • [Annoyed] "Argo! Restrain your eyebrows or you'll only be allowed 2 meals a week. That's an order!"

The target voice is a gravelly, young voice. Similar sound to Naruto's American voice actor, but with different pitch and tone. Perhaps it's closer to one of Frieza's voice actors. Anyway, here is a reference. The rough voice is not a requirement, however. He ultimately needs to sound like a young imp of a boy.

  • "I've got a job for you, Domon. But you may not like it. There's going to be this party later tonight. You'll be working for hundreds of people. You'll be on your feet and working up a sweat. And by the end of it you'll feel the need to clean yourself in a shower. You in?" (Domon: "I guess if I have to.") "See? Washing dishes isn't so bad, but you get what I mean about the shower, right?"

  • [taunting his opponent] "Listen, bro! I've played far too many matches of League of Legends to screw up with these swag flags. You gotta do better than that!"

The Chibodee Gals. They're all kind of similar. Just young women with not a ton that distinguishes them. They will all have the same voice for this series.

  • [Bunny speaking] "Hey. I'm one of Chibodee's crew members. He sent me to apologize for having those security guards chase you down. Here's one ticket to a show on broadway. He said whatever you go see, he's sure it'll be a smash." [menacing, veiled pun threat on smash]

He should sound like a young man. His tone should be cocky when he's talking about fighting, his strength, or his country. It should be normal when talking about most other things. I would not prefer any sort of American accent. It just doesn't jive with the vision I have for him. However, I'm open to interpretation with everything else about his voice. For reference, this is one of his first scenes. Listen to his voice, give his character model a good looking over. What do you hear him as?

  • [punching through a table] "Hyaaa! Nothing like punching through pure Giant redwood. Bunny! Bring me another one!" (Bunny: But you've already broken six of them! Do you really need to break more?") "The last of the redwood forest isn't going to break itself. Besides, punching tables is my regular pre-match ritual. Calms the nerves, gets me in the zone, helps me repress haunting childhood memories." [(Bunny: "What?") Chibodee responds immediately] "What?"

  • "I'm not worried about some guy from Neo Japan. His Gundam doesn't even look like a football player, isn't that against the rules?" (Douglas: "First, no. Second, that's irrelevant. What matters is that he could be trying to make an attempt on your life at this very moment.") "I highly doubt that." [Chibodee, along with the others in the room, hear a man getting violently attacked in the next room over, to which Chibodee responds as it gets quiet] "Ok fine. Send the guards."

I'm not terribly picky with Rain's voice beyond that she's not shrill and childish, nor old and sultry. She should sound like an ordinary 20-something woman. In the anime, her voice sounds a bit older in my opinion, but that's not necessarily preferred.

  • [plainly, and matter-of-fact] "I had to pump your stomach because you got food poisoning. I ran a test on the contents and--" (Domon interrupts: I'll never trust sweet, old ladies in shady bars again--") [Rain interrupts back] "People, Domon. You ate people."

  • [reflecting on her day] "You know, the Italian police gave me quite the runaround. They wouldn't take money for your bail; just... pizzas... for some odd reason."

Mark Gatha has a unique voice. I don't know if I've heard anything comparable to his Domon Kasshu, but a voice similar to his is preferred, though not expected. When acting as Domon, his voice should have the tenor of an average 20-something male. It's silvery, pleasant to listen to, and should communicate youthfulness more than manliness, while still being noticeably male. Basically he doesn't sound like this. It should sound like this. His voice is lighter, not terribly deep or gravelly. He is loud, but when he yells there is still a softness to it. He's very matter-of-fact. He sounds sure of what he's saying, even if he really isn't sure.

  • [After promising to not be rude to the hosts of his dinner] "I promise, I won't do anything to get on Chapman's nerves. Besides, he seems like a pretty chill guy. i'm sure he wouldn't have guns pulled out on me again," [the next cut immediately has Domon knocking over a teacup, and aggressively saying] "The John Bull Gundam's hat just isn't fashionable!" [(hard emphasis on fashionable) the next cut has Chapman pulling out a gun on Domon, to which he responds surprised] "Annnnd, I guess I was wrong."

  • [kneeling to the ground in pain, holding his stomach] "Ah jeez. I knew it was a mistake eating that 8th slice of pie before committing a crime. Now I'm going to get shot. How the heck am I supposed to get out of this? It's not like I can catch bull--oh wait."

Previous winner of the 12th Gundam Fight, Domon Kasshu's teacher, and former King of Hearts. He is an expert of martial arts, but mainly prefers a style involving lengths of cloths. He is incredibly strong, incredibly wise, and incredibly hard to beat. He's earned the name 'Undefeated of the East". Similar to Schwarz, Master is loud and over-the-top, both in action and words. For the series, he'll be quite similar but a bit more of a jerk/antagonistic. He'll insult people more, too. However, I'm thinking of having him be nonchalant about his abilities--in the same vain as Chuck Norris jokes or the Dos Equis guy.

Wily, deeper, and potentially gravely old man voice. His voice isn't brittle, either. No quavering. It's robust.

  • "Look, Domon. These abs of mine--" (Domon: "You've never been touched by DG Cells!") "No, not that. These abs of mine have been used to cut diamonds." (Domon: But Master what does that have to do wi-- Wait, diamonds? Really? That's, that's impressive.") "Yes. Yes it is."

  • "You fool! Do you still not understand why the environment matters? Even after forcing you to watch Birdemic as my pupil? You've always been too full of yourself to be inconvenienced by the truth. But now, now I'll just have to teach you to be inconvenienced by a new truth! And by truth I mean my fists! HYAAAAA!"

Another young, male voice. Not deep, not coarse. With George the big focus is how he speaks as opposed to what he sounds like. He ought to be very well-spoken. He's very clear in what he says, never uses any slang, and generally sounds noble when speaking. However, he can sometimes come off as a high and mighty.

  • "You see, the rose bits are just another example of Neo France's brilliant engineering." [a slight pause] "What is it? Why have you fallen silent?" (Domon: "Honestly, I was expecting them to just blow up. Y'know. The comedic timing is begging for it.") "Well, I'm not sorry to disappoint you. Neo France is far too sophisticated for both poor engineering and being the object of poor jokes." (Domon: "But if that's true why is the Eiffel Tower exploding?") "What?! Inconceivable!"

  • My defeat was certain, but, just before he fired his last round, he seemed to go mad. He kept muttering about substance abuse, 360 degree no scopes, and making montages. I was relieved and horrified at the same time."

Kyoji Kasshu/Schwarz Bruder

If you hadn't already pieced it together, these two are essentially the same person. I had to group them as a pair for two reasons. First, I want them to be consistent with the same voice actor. Second, for the most part, the role will mainly be Schwarz talking. Kyoji doesn't really have a ton of speaking scenes as himself, except for a few flashbacks. Kyoji is often portrayed as dark and brooding. He sometimes has a maniacal laugh here or there, but that's it. Otherwise, he is calm, nurturing, and protective. He's really a kind, gentle man. Schwarz, contrarily, is intense. He first shows up and is constantly yelling about everything. Well, maybe not yelling. He's loud and bombastic--over-the-top, if you will.

Kyoji has a gentle, pleasant voice, yet it is quite distinct as a more mature man's voice. Schwarz, as mentioned above, is intense. He likes to be loud and obnoxious, but also sneaky and cool. He is, after all, a German ninja. It's like a paradox. Odd the world hasn't imploded because of it. He's not afraid to be a jerk, but his attempts more often seem silly rather than serious.

  •  "The Devil Gundam! It's been here the whole time. And it's been discovered by me, Schwarz Bruder!" (Master Asia: "What? Who said that?") [in response] "No one, especially not Schwarz Bruder!" (Master Asia: "Hmm. Must've been my imagination.")

  • "Come on, Domon! You've never truly been a man until you've fought a Gundam with just a sword! Now! Stop trying to hit and hit me!"
