Funland - Short Narrative Radio Play requires three actresses (one young adult, two children)
Project Overview
Funland is a short, character-driven, drama based radio play originally intended to be a short film.
Funland is a project about gambling addiction. It revolves around a single mother struggling to get by because of her addiction and how this affects her young daughter. The film is a snapshot of a day in their life, but particularly the young girl – and how she perceives everything around her.
Imagine these experiences from the child’s point of view, Every day her mother drags her from one pub to the next, then into the local arcade. Her mother finds her regular spot at the fruit machines and the child is parked next to them. The arcade is incredibly noisy, sounds flowing from all directions creating a sensory overload. In an attempt to get her mums attention, she playfully knocks into her, but her mum’s too fixated on the machines. The child becomes upset and frustrated, crying and screaming as she doesn’t have a choice in any of this.
Her mother hands her a few coins and tells her to find something to do. When she’s walking around everything seems big and scary, the constant flashing lights and loud music are almost in slow motion and out of synch with each other until she sees another child playing by themselves. The young girl creates an instant bond with the other child, and they set out on a small adventure throughout the day.
This a student project being created for a module at university, so, unfortunately, there is no budget. You will be fully credited, and when the project is completed, you will be given a copy. Thanks!

The character, Mum, is struggling with a gambling addiction which is shattering her relationship with her young child but also the way she reacts to simple questions. She's almost robotic and drone-like, but when asked the questions becomes easily angered and annoyed. She has a very harsh tone to her voice. She obviously cares about her daughter, but love nothing more than to be just left in peace to keep gambling.
The lines listed were taken from the opening scene where mum is becoming more and more annoyed at Jody being around. Her tone is as mentioned, very annoyed and harsh.
Get lost. You’ve already had something.
Will you shut up for five minutes? You're giving me a bloody headache.
Now, get lost.
Jody is the lead role. She's a young girl, around the age of 9 or 10. She's quite shy, especially when meeting new people and this is reflected in her quiet tone. When she's with her mum she tries to be playful and inquisitive. She's had a tough upbringing and struggled to bond with her mother during the time of addiction.
The lines listed are taken from a scene where Jody loses her mum, and so acts quite shy when she's talking to Sammy. She's also a little fed up and tired because she's worried.
I’m waiting for my mum.
She’ll be done soon. She takes forever though, and never wants to leave.
I guess--but I should go to my mum soon. She’s probably forgotten about me, whenever we’re here she forgets the time.
Sammy is the friend that Jody finds when wondering throughout the arcade. Jody is a few years older, around 11 or 12. She's an extremely confident child for her age and very independent.
The lines listed were taken from a scene where Sammy is shaking a coin machine to get her money back. As mentioned Sammy acts a lot older than she is. So she does use a few swear words throughout the script.
Piss off.
It’s a stupid game, my mum says the coins are glued down.
I can help you look for your mum if you want? I used to get lost in here all the time.
