About [English Fandub] My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong, as I Expected (Episode 1)

~My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Episode 1 English Fandub~

Greetings, aspiring voice actors and hobbyists alike!

You have just clicked on a casting call for what is essentially the "pilot" for a full-length fandub of the wildly popular anime adaptation of My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong, as I Expected, also known as My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Yahari Ore No Seishun, or just simply Oregairu. If you already knew that, you're probably here because you're either a fan of the show or the franchise as a whole, but here's a brief synopsis of the original Light Novel nevertheless, courtesy of Wikipedia:

"Created by Wataru Watari, the story follows two loners: the pragmatic Hachiman Hikigaya and beautiful Yukino Yukinoshita, who, despite their varying personalities and ideals, offer help and advice to others as part of their school's Service Club, assisted by the cheerful and friendly Yui Yuigahama. It largely depicts various social situations faced by teens in a high school setting and the psychology driving their interactions."

This has all come about primarily because this is one of my favourite franchises. Recently, I was slightly surprised to discover that there is still no official English dub for the anime, which led me to start visualising what such a production may look like. I'm no longer surprised at its lack of an official English release, because much of the dialogue is very nuanced and often enriched by the contextual subtleties of the Japanese language, but I fully believe that it can become an engaging English-language production that stays true to the meaning of the original. I am alone however, so although I am a confident video editor and believe I can mix together some appropriate audio, doing an entire season would take quite a while, never mind TWO seasons.

So, I figured that if I could put together and direct a relatively successful dub of the first episode, I would be able to use it to attract some sweet, sweet human resources for a proper production. (Although, mostly I'm just testing the waters to see if a foreign dub of this show could actually work. Not that I'm not fully committed to producing this first episode though, because I am!)

Almost immediately I began working on a script. Thus far, progress has been decent, so I figured it's about time I created the casting call for it!

The Rules, or guidelines of these auditions, are fairly straightforward. Just the usual ones you'd expect, like having a decent quality microphone, and having little to no background noise, distortion or reverb in your auditions.

Since there's a good chance the rambling wall of text will have caused your interest to wane a little, here's what you could probably describe as answers to FAQ's some of you might have:

    1. The finished episode will be uploaded to YouTube, possibly mirrored elsewhere,  definitely if the series is prone to copyright removal.
    • As already stated, WE WILL ONLY BE DUBBING THE FIRST EPISODE for now. That means this isn't a long-term project per se, but a couple of the characters have a proportionally large amount of lines, so commitment is still a fitting positive trait for this.

    • The deadline says a month from now (to finish on the 3rd of January 2018) but if I had a gold account I would have been able to set it to the original date planned, which was early February, as the Christmas period will probably hinder both my progress on the script and you guys finding time to record and submit auditions that you're happy with. So you can expect that, unless I find some absolutely perfect voices beforehand, the deadline is very liable to extend. Still, get them in as soon as you can, if you please!
    1. I'm not going to be a strict taskmaster for this (although I'm very picky with direction, sorry) so deadlines once you've been cast will be relatively flexible, as I'll potentially still be touching up the script or getting everything technical done by the time all final lines are submitted. No flakes though please, as hypocritical as that may or may not be coming from me.

If you're still here and still interested in the project, then I recommend you confirm with yourself that you are a person who is fine with receiving constructive feedback for their work and fine with being asked to resubmit with changes. I'll work with all of you with great enthusiasm however, so don't worry about the possibility of negative vibes!

In fact, to help with the whole process, I've created a Discord for the project:

Anyone interested can join right now, but it's mainly for the cast members to have smooth communication with me and other members. So yes, if you are cast, it is a MUST that you join. (IIRC, creating a Discord account isn't necessarily required to use Discord, but it certainly helps and only takes about two seconds anyways) Also I will be giving unlimited feedback upon request, on the server.

Right, I think that about covers everything. All that's left for you is to see which characters might suit your talents!

(As the script is not yet finished, lines are not yet finalised. But they are all my own translations. *proud*)

    Quick Auditions Key
"Quoted text" = The actual line you perform
[Italics in square brackets] = direction for the line, to help with context
(Normal text in brackets/parentheses) = Extra info, pronunciations etc.

Any upper case words or italics riddled amongst the actual lines are there to signal intonation i.e. words to emphasise. I'm not particularly strict about this though, so you can change it up however you want as long as there's at least one take that is performed as written.
