Do Know Harm: Chapter 1
Project Overview
Do Know Harm is an upcoming visual novel crossed with an arcade-style emergency medical simulator. Heavily inspired by Atlus’ Trauma Center series, the game centers on two combat medics as they find themselves at the center of a war inspired by the first and second world wars. Due to its setting and themes, please be aware that the game will involve scenes of violence, discrimination, and profanity.
Do Know Harm was originally conceived in concept by Calvin Nguyen, who led its active development with a team of undergraduates for UCLA ACM Studio’s Students Run Studios program. Chapter 1 of Do Know Harm is estimated to be released in Fall of 2023, with the remaining four chapters to follow over the period of 2023-2024. Because this is a student project primarily developed by volunteers with little budget, with the ultimate intention that all profits are donated to UNICEF, payment cannot be offered and should not be expected coming into this project. This situation may change in future chapters, but promises cannot be made.
Voice artists may audition for as many roles as they would like. Casting a single actor for multiple supporting roles will be generally avoided. However, multicasting for minor roles and patients will be considered.
To audition for a character, please read and record their provided lines. Up to three variations of a single line reading may be submitted at once. Please submit all auditions through CCC. The deadline to submit your auditions is July 5th, 2023 at 11:59 PM PST. If you are offered a role, you will receive a return email within the following week. If you are not offered a role, you will not receive a follow up email from us. You may not be offered the original role you applied for, but may instead receive an alternate role that we believe may fit your voice range better.

TIME COMMITMENTS:
Time commitment will depend heavily on the amount of roles you are offered and choose to accept. Because Do Know Harm is a visual novel, please be aware that there will be a large amount of lines for larger roles.
If you accept roles, you will be coached through your lines through various practice sessions over Discord. These sessions may have other actors in attendance as well.
The bulk of actual voice recording will take place from mid-July to mid-August.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Access to a microphone in an acceptable sound environment is MANDATORY.
Blue Yeti microphones are the minimum quality of microphone that should be used for official recordings.
Recordings must be made in a room with sound absorbent qualities (closet padded with clothes, makeshift studio with blankets, etc.). Auditions with audible reverb will be dismissed.

(Concerned, but somewhat annoyed) Oh my gosh. You would have been finished five hours ago if you just took my notes.
(Half-jokingly, whispering because there’s someone sleeping) …I hope there’s no dirt on that. Mom’ll kill you.
(Teasingly) I know you can, but it’s nice to have your big sister pamper you a bit, isn’t it? You’ve been busy lately.
MINOR ROLE
Grant is a new medtech graduate. He tries his best.

(Extremely awkwardly, stuck in a conversation you don’t want to be in) Haha! I’m a bit nervous honestly. How ‘bout you?
(In shock, disbelief) Holy Christ, there’s a pileup out there!
(Carrying something extremely heavy) …Yes! Sir!

(Delighted, excited to talk to someone) Hannah- oh, what a sweet name! You can call me Edith, dear. Now, what’s this about training? I see your cute little uniform- is this for the DCD?
(Reminiscently) I remember when we would have to use horse carriages to get around. Now look at us now! Streetcars and buses all over the place, skyscrapers and buildings… Oh, how things change.
(Bitterly) Those people… they think they can go across the world stomping on every poor soul as they please. And look at where that got us- a four year war.
MINOR ROLE
A member of the DCD Militia. Although a close “friend” of Ryan Emerson, he’s still very obviously put off by his words and actions. Scared of taking action, he chooses to instead remain silent.

(Genuinely impressed) I heard she was at the pileup last week. Carried the whole group and saved everyone’s ass- pretty damn impressive.

(Scolding) Wai, why didn’t you wait for backup? It’s in the protocol! You know you need to have at least your buddy-
(Taken aback) E-Excuse me? You can’t talk to me like that-

(Roll-calling) Everyone, sound off! Corbett?
(Replying to a heavy question) I don’t think so. At least not from the sea- we have destroyers patrolling all over the ocean now. Their U-boats shouldn’t be getting anywhere near us. Not anymore.
(Gently, but firmly) I don’t want you to overextend yourself. We have more medtechs on scene already. No need to fill the kitchen with cooks. Get some air, okay?
MINOR ROLE
A naval officer coordinating a rescue effort. Constantly stressed but hyper focused, he goes about his work as efficiently and quickly as possible.

(Matter-of-factly) Situation’s FUBAR. There was an ammunition detonation on one of the cargo ships at about 1400 hours. No idea what caused it, but we’re dealing with the biggest mass casualty incident I’ve ever seen.
(Sarcastically) No, I was actually planning on sticking you folks right next to a live ammo dump.
(Matter-of-factly) The wounded are triaged by row. Start with the guys without anyone helping them yet. I’ll have the corpsmen share any medical supplies with you. You’ll need ‘em.
MINOR ROLE

(Speaking over a crowd) We just fished four guys out of the water and they all look like crap. They got stuck in a burning oil slick. Everyone’s overloaded, you’ll have to take ‘em!
(Explaining, somewhat quickly) 1.5 ccs of Alaphine Tartrate. Analgesic and vital stabilizer, courtesy of the Navy. Factories are spitting these out faster than sunflower seeds.
(Instructively, clearly) Hold it in place when you pierce the skin to push the medications in. Make sure you get every last drop in. Go when you’re ready.
MINOR ROLE
One of many midway game attendants at the Alton Bros. Circus. A self-proclaimed natural orator, she has a keen eye (according to her) for strongmen.

(Bombastically) Are you two folks interested in a little test of strength? Only a nickel a shot! One win, one sideshow ticket!
(Mockingly, Smugly) Would you look at that! Someone her size rang the bell? You can’t let your little girlfriend show you up now, can you?

(Mockingly, Non-threatened) We’re not gonna beat down a little girl.
(Panicking, trying to regain control) I-It doesn’t fuckin’ matter! We can still teach ‘em a lesson-
MINOR ROLE
A rioter following Charlie Hendrick’s lead. Minimal story participation, but there are three separate characters bundled into this role.

(Calmly, dismissively) Don’t make a fuss now, girlie. We won’t hurt ya.
(Hit by a flashlight) AGH!
(Terrified) C-Charlie, these kids are fucking insane!
Do Know Harm’s gameplay involves the player performing first-aid on a variety of different patients. These patients are numerous and will often require having to act in severe pain.
(We would very much appreciate it if you could go all out for these voice lines.)
Lines:
Choose 2 of the following 4 to record. (We do encourage you to try all four!) Pretend as if…
You have the worst headache you have ever had in your life.
Your throat is constricted and you are desperately gasping for air.
You’ve been shot by someone with a handgun.
You are on fire.
Choose 2 of the following 3 to record. (Again, we encourage you to try all of them!)
(In severe pain) I… I think something’s wrong with my leg. I-I can’t feel anything!
(Panicking) I- I- I don’t know where I am! Where am I?! Someone help me! SOMEONE HELP ME!
(In pain, crying) No, I can’t… I can’t… oh God… oh God, this is gonna kill Mama…
