Character Portrait Artist Needed for Literary Cast (Semi-Realistic, Emotion-Focused) (Commercial/Merch Use)

Character Portrait Artist Needed for Literary Cast (Semi-Realistic, Emotion-Focused) (Commercial/Merch Use)

Project Overview

I’m going to be honest about this upfront.

I’m not a visual artist. I’m a novelist, and these characters have been living in my head for years—some of them for over a decade. I know how they move, how they hold themselves, what they feel like to be around. Translating that into something visual isn’t my skillset, so I’m looking for an artist who can meet me there.

This isn’t about getting “nice-looking” portraits. It’s about getting portraits that feel like real people—people who carry things, who hold tension, who don’t broadcast everything they’re feeling on their face.

Most of these characters live in restraint. The emotion is there, but it’s controlled, internal, sometimes only visible in small shifts—posture, tension, the way they hold their jaw or their shoulders. That subtlety matters more to me than dramatic expression.

Project Overview

These portraits are for my novel The Weight of Silence (Faultlines series), a literary fiction project that leans heavily on interiority—what’s happening underneath, not just what’s visible on the surface.

I will be providing full character bios, not just physical descriptions. You’ll have access to how they think, how they react under pressure, and the patterns that shape how they exist in a room. I’m looking for an artist who can translate that into visual form.

The project has strong potential for ongoing work. I expect to commission at least 10 portraits over time, though not all at once. I’d like to start with 1–2 characters first to make sure the fit is right, then expand into the larger cast if the collaboration works well.

Style Direction

• Semi-realistic digital portraits

• Soft-rendered or painterly style, with clear form and readable silhouettes

• Bust or waist-up framing

• Minimal or clean backgrounds

• Consistent style across multiple characters

The goal is grounded, emotionally real portraits—not glamorized, not exaggerated.

What Matters Most

• Subtle expression (micro-emotions over exaggerated ones)

• Personality communicated through posture and body language

• A strong sense of presence, not just likeness

• Ability to interpret written character material, not just visual references

Production Requirements

These portraits will be used for printed merchandise (prints, bookmarks, stickers, etc.), so files must be suitable for print.

Please be comfortable providing:

• High-resolution artwork (300 DPI minimum)

• Large canvas size (3000px+ on the shortest side; larger preferred)

• Clean edges or simple backgrounds (for flexibility in layout)

• Final files in PNG (transparent background preferred) and/or layered PSD

Experience with print or merchandise design is a plus, but not required if you understand these constraints.

Usage

This is a paid commission with the intention of using the artwork for commercial merchandise related to my book/series. Full commercial usage rights will be required.

What to Include in Your Submission

• Portfolio (semi-realistic or character-focused work preferred)

• Any experience with print or merch, if applicable

• Optional: a quick note on how you approach translating personality into expression—this matters more to me than technical perfection

Accessibility Note

I am blind, so clear and detailed communication about your work is essential. This includes the ability to describe visual elements, expressions, and design choices in a way that allows me to fully understand and give feedback throughout the process.

If you are comfortable articulating your artistic decisions and describing subtle visual details, that will be a strong asset for this project.

What Good Descriptions Look Like

You do not need to be perfect at this. I am not looking for technical art vocabulary or overly formal descriptions—just clear, thoughtful communication.

For example:

• “His shoulders are slightly tense, like he’s bracing without realizing it.”

• “Her expression is neutral at first, but there’s a softness around the eyes that makes her feel approachable.”

• “The lighting is soft and even, with no harsh shadows—it keeps the focus on the expression.”

What matters most is helping me understand what you’re seeing and why you made certain choices. If you can walk me through your thinking in plain language, that’s more than enough.

In addition, straightforward facial descriptions are extremely helpful. I already have detailed written character descriptions, so clearly describing the face—features, proportions, expression, and any defining details—helps me confirm accuracy and give precise feedback.

If you enjoy character-driven work and the challenge of translating internal, restrained emotion into something visual, I’d love to work with you.
