Can Someone Hear Me? (Short Film)
Project Overview
“Can Someone Hear Me?” is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller short taking inspiration from The Thing and Alien that explores the inner conflict of wanting to react emotionally when the situation calls for a hard and logical response.
Our story follows Miller, a pandemic containment radio operator of an underground bunker, who while communicating with another bunker's operator, finds out that one of his base's colleagues is infected and that colleague's significant other wants to keep it a secret.
The film is a tight narrative set within a richer, larger world: an alternate reality where 1980s United States has a catastrophic malfunction regarding its nuclear stockpile and sends the world into a nuclear hellscape involving an authoritarian military government, a network of underground bunkers, and a lethal mutated fungal infection. Those infected would imitate regular human behavior to lure in its next host and spread the disease. It is nearly impossible to decipher between the voice of a parasitized victim and a healthy human.
This film will feature a bunker fully realized through a studio build with custom made set decoration and props. We want to provide a real world to audiences and allow our cast to fully immerse themselves into the minds of our characters.
We also have an original soundtrack planned which could be described as 80s synthwave ambiance with an eerie quality. It will dynamically reflect the increasing dread and fear our characters feel as they contemplate their growing mistrust towards each other and how to deal with the infection. We truly want to pay homage to the sci-fi thriller classics of the 80s.
We are currently hoping to cast the radio operator (Simon) who is talking to our main protagonist, Miller throughout the film, but is never actually seen. Our mic requirement would be an XLR mic equal to or better than the AT2020. Auditioning voice actors should also be able to do basic audio cleanup (removal of static). File type should be .wav 44.1 khz 16 bit PCM.
Our casted voice actor would be sent the full script and be given until around May 15th, 2019 to record their lines. They may also be asked in June to provide retakes or adjustments if our post sound mixer/designer feels there is a need for a better sounding take. In terms of compensation, our casted voice actor would receive an IMDB credit, a credit in the film, a copy of the film when ready, and footage for their demo reel when not conflicting with requirements of film festivals we plan on submitting to.

Casting Decision for Miller + Another Role Will Be Posted Soon!
Hey everyone! Thanks for submitting your auditions! We have decided to cast Jacob Williamson for the role of Simon. We will also be posting another VA role soon! Stay posted!
The perfect balance between fun and productive, Simon is the excellent radio operator of Relay Station North Star and cheerful friend of Miller. He always wants people to smile and enjoy themselves despite how dire their situation is. However, beneath his happy exterior, he is always attentive and on the lookout for signs of the infection. He is always making sure the infection doesn’t spread further, whatever the cost. His friendship with Miller and loyalty to his duties are tested when he notices Miller acting nervously greeting his returning colleagues and hopping back onto comms.
For the first audition line, you are casually and happily having a conversation with a good friend of yours, Miller. He's one of the few people who makes living in a radiation afflicted world bearable. You are curious about what his response will be and hope that everything is fine.
For the second audition line, you are getting quite concerned. Miller sounds panicked and you've never heard him like this before. You know that he's regularly a positive and calm person so whatever is freaking him out isn't ordinary. The fact that he's trying to pass off as being fine is worrying as he's lying to you. Worst case scenario is that his base has been compromised by the infection and you'd need to call in a cleanup squad. You'd lose your best friend but ensure your safety and the future of mankind. You really hope it doesn't need to come to that.
For the third audition line, you are really worried, almost angry even, as you don't like how Miller's lying to you and are truly fearing that his base has been compromised and that you need to sacrifice him in order to protect yourself and humanity. You bring up the keyword in a desperate bid to see if you're actually talking to the Miller you used to know and not some infected counterfeit. You really hope your worst fears of your best friend being infected isn't true.
Wanted to check in. You know what's taking your pals so long?
Are you okay Miller?
What the hell is going on with you Miller? What's the keyword?
A calm voice for the automated PA system in Station Pegasus, our live action characters' underground home.
For the audition line, it's just a calm voice talking about something occurring in the base.
