Bound and Bonded - Magic: the Gathering

Bound and Bonded - Magic: the Gathering

Project Overview

As Wizards of the Coast continues to release their weekly Magic Story updates, it is our goal on the Voice of All podcast to bring these stories to life through audio.

The Guilds of Ravnica stories are each individual vignettes into life on the city world of Ravnica. Each is a look into the life of the lower classes as they participate in a guild and daily life and this week we feature a group of Selesnyan friends on an adventure! Our main character is also our narrator this week so if you are prepared for that, read on! You can check out this story in full here:

If you're interested in hearing our past works, you can listen to all of them here:

https://www.voiceofallmtg.com/

We can also be found on Soundcloud, Stitcher, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Podcasts! We are looking to keep up with the release of Wizards' stories as best as possible and will release our version the second following Friday, so expect to be cast this week and have your lines to me within a few days.

As a general casting note, I do not typically have any voice requirements in mind for characters. I would much rather hear your interpretations and choose from among them.

Role assigned to: beardyman

The elf Terrik is a former wurmcaller - he trained gigantic worm-like creatures for battle, until one day he accidentally caused a building to collapse full of innocent workers. He has since been filled with regret, unable to hold a job, losing his friends, and spending what little money he has to help an orphan whose parents died in the accident. Being Selesnyan, he does his best to always be polite and kind, but he's starting to fray at the edges.

Terrik is also the narrator of this story, so in addition to his in character lines, you will need to read narration for the story - about 20 pages (~8000 words) in total.

  • "Ambrellin, I appreciate your generosity of taking me into your home, but do you really think I'd be able to fit a half-grown wurm under my bed?" [still polite, but tamping down annoyance]

  • "Ma'am. I could really use your help. I've got a plan to free me and you and everyone else the pontiff's got bound by contract. All I ask of you is to do these two simple things . . ." [pleading]

  • [Narration Test] I open my eyes, and he's passed his staff to the thrull, who's only holding the dagger and Bazda's hair pins. Where did they hide the artifact? Bazda nods at me, then I look down, noticing a bump under my armor that wasn't there a moment ago. I discreetly feel along its edges, the shape of a crescent with a hole in the middle. Her quick thieving hands had planted it on me without me even noticing.

Ambrellin is a dryad and friend of Terrik whose been gracious enough to let him live with her since his fall from grace. By trade she is an artifact broker, with a keen eye for history and valuable items. Though extremely patient she is starting to get tired of Terrik and his inability to move on.

  • "That's good, Terrik. It really is. But at some point, we're going to have to talk about what's healthy grieving and what's obsession. Eventually, you'll have to forgive yourself and move on, and it'll be a lot easier if your emotions aren't tied up with the fate of an orphan."

  • "I doubt it. Word travels fast among antiquity brokers. I would have heard something."

  • "Okay I'm angry with you, are you happy? We've been patiently waiting for you to hit rock bottom, so we could help build you back up, but instead, you've managed to drag us down with you! Our get togethers are all about tiptoeing around your feelings, and you've thrown off our chemistry, and now Savaryn and Kellim are leaving because you've been so insufferable to be around!"

Role assigned to: Hannah Rite

A young girl who was orphaned during the accident Terrik caused. Being Orzhovian, her parents ghosts remain to work of their past debts, so they never get to visit or take care of her. She is a blunt, smartass of a twelve year old who is eager for adventure.

  •  "I've seen you around before. You drop off a bag of zibs every week, then stand around watching me. It's creepy. Are you a creeper?"

  • "They're not 'in a better place' if that's what you were going to say. They're in the same place, but worse, because they're spirits now. They're so busy working off their debts they don't have time to visit me."

  • "My father found it digging at the basilica,. Is it old?"

Role assigned to: Actaeon

A highly ranked member of the Orzhov (an organization part church and part crime family). Unscrupulous and greedy, he's holding countless spirits (and soon our heroes) in perpetual debt, searching for an artifact that will make him unfathomably rich.

  • "Faster! It's got to be buried around here somewhere."

  • "Ah, but the Orzhov Syndicate considers possession ninety-nine hundredths of the law. And now I possess them." [in response to "Those are mine!"]

  • "Oh, you're going to be in debt to my family for generations." [smiling]

Savaryn is a loxodon, an elephant man. He is big and burly and isn't afraid of anything (except mice). He is kind and gentle and very eager to maintain their friend group.

  • "Kellim and I have just come to share a bit of blessed news. I've been granted a promotion. The Kasarna training grounds have reached maximum capacity, so they're planning a new facility on the other side of the North Ridge Forest. I'll be the director, and Kellim has been hired to design it."

  •  "Terrik's right. A major bonding event in the form of an adventure would provide a positive transitional structure to a long-distance friendship."

  • "He doesn't look like the kind of guy who takes kindly to uninvited guests. Come on. Ambrellin wants to apologize, then we can work on getting out of here." [whispering]

The ghost of Bazda's mother, bound to serve the pontiff for generations. She is sad and nervous, hopeful to reduce her sentence.

  • "It mints gold coins out of copper, some Izzet invention that was stolen by Master's great-grandfather twelve generations back. He used it to amass a great wealth that launched him into a position with the elite, the family's dirty little secret."

  • "You shouldn't linger."

  • "We can't. We are bound by contract. The law magic would pull us right back here if we dared to run away."
