BLACK BOOK

Project Overview

Welcome one and all! My name is Raymond McNeil, lead writer, director and executive producer of this humble project.

BLACK BOOK is the followup audiodrama series to my original story WHITEBOOK (video provided above).

The story of BLACK BOOK follows the exploits of the Journalist Ethan Kavanaugh and his mysterious encounters with the shadowy town of Whitebook, West Virginia. Intrigue and anxiety are the order of the day, pitting the unlucky reporter against the disquieted underbelly of this midwestern town.

Now, notes about the aduitions proper:

REQUIREMENT 1: Clean audio is an absolute must. With the direction we are looking to take this series we need sound that is as crystal clear as we can get.

REQUIREMENT 2: The range necessary in this project is varried. Screaming, shouting, whispering, whimpering; we will need your voice to be able to reflect the emotions of real humans in surreal situations.

REQUIREMENT 3: A strong constituion when dealing with the unnerving, disturbing and the macabre. This project is intended to be rated R for situations and themes that may cause emotional grief, stress or upset. Any applicants must be willing to work with scenarios that may ultimately make them feel uncomfortable.

REQUIREMENT 4: Skype, and to a lesser degree an available or amenable schedule. Our recording process utilizes Skype in order to perform full rehearsals of each script before recording proper. This is to ensure the most immediate direction and feedback, as well as to encourage actor interplay that could bring the spirit of each character to life. Email addresses would also be appreciated upon casting.

SUGGESTION: Play with each voice. While it is a serious piece, that does not mean it is devoid of humor or comedy. Finding how each character behaves will be a different experience with each person, and I suggest you attempt at least three different takes in order to feel out different expressions of the same character.

PAY: Each role is paid, though minimally thanks to independent production. The pay listed with each role is per performance in the series. Some roles are reoccuring, some are one-offs.

Thank you in advance for your auditions! I look forward to working the excellent voice actors on this site!

Role assigned to: angrytoastva

A young police sheriff in Charelston, West Virginia, though she was born in Whitebook. Is headstrong and prefers cutting to the chase. Often snaps at people though only when she is under considerable stress. Regularly redirects tangental conversation to the problem at hand.

Accent Notes:

Born in Appalachia (the American Appalachian Mountains), she could possibly have a Southern United States accent, ranging from moderate to sutble in strength. Preferably only a hint of her Southern roots, though variation is encouraged.

  • (Irritated, factual) If I have to tell you to shut up one. More. Time, I will turn this car around and personally shove my boot up your ass.

  • (recomposing, apologetic) Sorry, I lost my head there...

  • (evasive) I've... had a long shift...

Role assigned to: yunoe

Another Whitebook resident who grew up with a very pious lifestyle. She has an unyielding dedication to her profession, even when it may not be in her own best self-interest. Has a tendency to be snappy towards those that don't work for her, and has a soft spot for those who do. Knows when the situation is out of her control and accepts what she cannot change.

Accent Notes:

Born in Appalachia (the American Appalachian Mountains), she could possibly have a Southern United States accent, ranging from moderate to sutble in strength. Preferably only a hint of her Southern roots, though variation is encouraged.

Other Note:

The character's age is variable between teenaged and adult. Feel free to experiment in the audition.

  • (cold, sharp, commanding) Do what you have to, just get it done.

  • (hurried, dismissive) There's enough on our plate, we don't have time to deal with something like that.

Open to anyone with clean sound, there are several extra roles that can be filled by a variety of people. This will more or less be a pick and choose list; when we need an extra, we'll refer back to this audition spread in order to find the best talent that fits our needs.

  • (Whispering, chanting)

    Asperges me, Domine,

  • (concerned, calm, warm) Are you alright? Let's get you on the table and have a look at that.

  • (detached) Avoiding the inevitable will never help solve a problem; you need to tackle it at it's core.

Role assigned to: Joshua Magill

A young-to-middle-aged scientist from a University in the United States' North East. Determined and laser focused, with a cold demeanor when he is in the middle of examining the results of an experiment and making observations. Often plays the adult in the room when others squabble, though he has an undercurrent of pretention when it comes to his own intellect.

Accent Notes:

Hails from the North East, so his accent can range anywhere from the traditional 'Hollywood' American Accent to shades of a Bostonian or New Yorker accent. Subtlety is prefered.

  • (Confused, flat) Not entirely sure what you expect me to see; the depression is odd, yes, but it's far from unexplainable.

  • (aggravated sigh) Well… no one else knows we’re here, right?

  • (irritated) Driving cross the damned country should be a crime!

  • (placated, confident) This hubbabaloo? It'll all blow over eventually.
