Anemoia - A Short Documentary about Cottagecore
Project Overview
The year is 2020, a year which we have famously dubbed the worst year of our lives. During these trying times, there seems to be a beam of hope piercing through from the abyss of the internet, namely, TikTok. Anemoia: Nostalgia for a Time You’ve Never Known, is a short documentary tasked with exploring the exponential rise of the cottagecore hashtag on TikTok during a global pandemic. This film will talk about this group of individuals who have come together to embrace and celebrate a simple and sustainable way of living. Anemoia is for those who long for an escape from our discouraging reality and the individuals who are suffocating from the feeling of being trapped indoors: Welcome to cottagecore.

For this short documentary, it is important that the narrator has a light and dream-like voice. Preferably female, as the aesthetic is heavily based in femininity. The narrator will be the audience's guide throughout the film, so it is very important that whoever gets this role has the proper aesthetic. This short documentary is roughly 4-6 minutes long, for reference.
Anemoia (ah-neh-moy-ah). An old word used to describe a longing for a time you've never known or experienced. Since the end of March 2020, when the world began its shutdown due to the global pandemic, people began to rely on the internet more than ever before.
Cottagecore is primarily an aesthetic, centred around femininity and charming cottage living.
An aesthetic that embraces girly dresses, treading through meadows and baking homemade focaccia bread.
At its roots, what makes cottagecore so unique and valued is its abundance of community, love and acceptance. A place for people to feel safe during uncertain times. A perfect fantasy that anyone can experience from the comfort of their own bed.
