ALONE (A Batman Audio Drama)
Project Overview
ALONE Is a multi-chapter story written by the ingeniuous wbss21 of which I have been a long-time fan. The general premise is that of The Joker coming into contact with the wife from his past, previously presumed dead, and the ramifications which follow. It's a Killing Joke lore-centric story that I've personally read multiple times and it is very near and dear to my heart.
Thus, I felt the need to pay homage to both a great writer and a great fan-story by producing it in a radio drama format.

The Joker once had a life removed from all this, different from what he'd become. But that life was gone, dead. He wasn't even sure if it had ever been real. That is, until she suddenly appeared, and now everything's become confused.

NOTE: If cast, you may be asked to do extra voices similar to your casting: i.e. Harley & Jeannie may be asked to play female extras, while Rory might be asked to play Jack as a child.

He's an ass with a good heart. Despite his condescending and no-nonsense machismo attitude, Harvey is one of the bestdetectives on the force.
He never mentioned anything bout his work with the mob? No names, no places... Not real talkative for a good husband, was he? Hey, easy now. I'm just trying to figure out how the Joker could have known to call you by a name only your husband knew. We're only looking out for your safety and your son's.
So, one of two suggestions. Feel free to try both/either/neither:
1. A Jack Nicholson esque voice. More the suave/gentlemanly monster than the second idea,
which would be:
2. Now this might sound ridiculous, but something not unlike Pete from the old mickey cartoons. Deep and severe. His voice makes you feel like you're two inches tall. Condescending.
Either way, he is described as a brick-wall of a man. Any front of kindness he puts forth is still mirthless and cruel.
He tells me this girl's his friend. Now I'm even more surprised, cause Jack here, he's got no friends. Especially friends who look that good. But he swears to me he's telling the truth. And low and behold, I guess he was! Just had to see it for myself, ya know?

This is not a kind Harley. She's entirely obsessed with the Joker and is NOT pleased with Jeannie's appearance in their 'happy life'. Arleen Sorkin or Tara Strong.
You don't know! You don't know nothin'! My puddin' needs me! He's… he's a genius! A God among men! But you're too stupid to know! You put him in here and, and, and call him a monster, but it's because you can't accept that he's right! You… you'd never stick by him like me! You just wanna hurt him! You'd leave him the second things got a little rough. I know you… I know you would!
He's intoxicating, isn't he? Strong. Brilliant. Handsome. And from what I can see, your "Jack" wasn't like that at all. I don't blame you for coming back and tryin' to get a piece of the action, wifey. Does it bother you that I got him at his best? As the man he was s'posed to be?

Whatever feels natural for you. This is a Batman in his 40's. I would prefer a Conroy-esque voice, but I am open to any interpretaion!
Most people who encounter the Joker, if they're lucky enough to make it out alive, they'd rather forget it ever happened. But here you are, looking up pictures of him.
He wasn't just… slapped around. His father tortured him. Severe physical beatings, mental and emotional degradation, extreme cruelty. He was made to think of himself as literally worthless. You consider his brilliant intellect, the intricacy with which he sees, how a mind like his would process and deal with that kind of treatment, and you might start to grasp the extent of what he suffered. What you just saw there was the result.

A classic gangster. Zucko is the loan shark who blackmails Jack to shut down the security system the night of the accident, threatening to kill Jeannie if he does not cooperate.
Good. Now, option one. I kill you right now for tryin' to cheat me outta money and then… and here's where I want you to listen carefully Jack, cause this is important. Then I go after that lovely little wife of yours, and I kill her too. Alright?
Now hold on a second kiddo. You ain't lettin' me finish. That's option number one. Option two, you go to work for me, pay me back that way, and maybe, just maybe, I'm willin' to forget this little, uh, transgression on your part. Huh? What do you say?

Detective Rios is the 'good cop' to Harvey's 'bad cop' routine. Kind, understanding, but no less capable than Harvey. They've dealt with matters surrounding the joker and other rogues before. Rios is not squeamish.
We don't want to take too much of your time, but you understand... He's the most wanted criminal in the state... Hell ,in the whole country. He's also the most dangerous. But, you know that...
We're not implying that, ma'am. Are we Harvey? We're just trying to be thorough The Joker is extremely dangerous. Any information which may lead to his whereabouts, I'm sure you understand, we have to follow through on.

I need a character actor! Someone who can throw their voice up or down. Be Dynamic and be creative!
Doctor: … You said you were scared. Do you want to talk about it? What are you scared of? ... No? Do you even know why you're here? Listen, I know that in the past you haven't shown much interest in these sessions, haven't shown an interest in progress, but if you want our time together to be productive, you're going to have to be honest with me.
Thug: Hey. Hello? Anybody home? Your bitch better not have called the cops... or we'll be back for her next. Understand? .... It's no fun when they stop fighting back.
[A monologue of your choice ]
Versatility is a must here. Joker & Jack are two seperate character voices entirely, but I want them voiced by the same actor.
For Joker I would prefer something along the lines of Mark Hamill and Troy Baker. Perhaps even grittier than the two of them, but not too far off.
As for Jack I'd like something similar, but tamed. Not that the 'joker voice' is drained of life -- Jack is a very bright/vibrant character, despite the horrors around him -- but that the... I don't know, if you just took out the sinister clown? Also,Jack is very prone to stuttering. He is severely nervous by nature.
Confusing, I know, but improvisation is encouraged! Just be as genuine as you can.
Feel free to do as many takes as necessary to show your different ideas. Improv if you'd like.
[Joker sample.] : "My dear girl… I can see you've convinced yourself of this particular delusion. That you really believe it to be true. It would be almost sweet, if it weren't so terribly pathetic. It's funny. They've got me locked up in here, and yet, there you are, clearly not operating in any sort of reality, but free to move about as you please. The absurdity of it is almost too much to bear.
[Jack sample] : Jeannie, I'm… I'm going to make it right. I'm going to make things right for us. We'll get out of the Narrows. We'll live someplace nice like… like you've always wanted to. I'll… I'll call Ace back up, I'll ask them if… if they still want me there, if… if they're still willing to put me through college… Things will be alright Jeannie. Things will be alright for you and the baby. I… I promise they will.

Jeannie is perhaps a more emotional voice than Joker or Jack. Not comedically so and certainly not over the top. She's a single mother who has been grieving her husband for fifteen years, never knowing what really happened to him, only to find that he wasn't dead, but the literal monster of Gotham City.
Be sincere. She is tired, worn, but not without kindness. She's been a support for everyone in her life and she is used to putting on a strong face.
(anger, disbelief) I thought my husband was dead! Do you honestly think that if I'd had even the slightest inkling Jack was alive, I would've left Gotham? I'm not here because Jack's the Joker, Harley. I'm here because the Joker is JACK. What will it take to get through to you?
(wistful, rememberance) He used to do that all the time. He had these characters he would make up, these different people who he'd pretend to be. He was so theatrical. I always used to tell him he could be a professional actor... but he had trouble around other people. People... for the most part... were mean to Jack.

A NOTE: You may be asked to play Jack/ The joker as a child. If you wish to improvise some lines for him, I would more than encourage it! If not, do not feel pressured.
Mom, is everything alright? You keep staring at the door... Like you're afraid something's gonna happen. Can't you just tell me what's going on? I promise I can handle it, whatever it is.

NEWS: : Thanks Tom. An update on the Joker story, the identity of the mystery witness has been released. Her name is Jeannette Reinking. She is a 5'6 blonde woman approximately age 40. If anyone knows her or if she is listening, Gotham PD has asked that they call the number listed to help with the investigation.
