Clay Jensen, a shy high school student, returns home from school one day to find that he has received a mysterious package in the mail. It contains seven double-sided cassette tapes used by Hannah Baker, a classmate who has recently committed suicide. Each tape details a reason that she killed herself.

Clay is our main man here, our narrator and guide through the frightening world of Hannah Baker's last hours. Much of the action in this story takes place in Clay's head, which means we have some pretty good insight into his character. His voice is slightly on the lower side. He can be shy but also lashes out quite a lot as the story goes on. He will have a lot of lines so I need someone reliable and easy to access.
-Shy but happy -I like the hair. The short hair. Um I liked the long hair, too. And, um, I realize this makes me seem wishy-washy, and I should have said something the other night, and in truth I don't actually like change, but this change seems cool.
-Angry-You see all these 'don't kill yourself' posters up on the wall? They weren't up before. They put them up *because* she killed herself. And why did she do it? Because the kids here treated her like sh! (you don't need to finish the word because swearing will be bleeped)
Zach actually starts out as a sympathetic character, trying to comfort Hannah after the Marcus incident at Rosie's. But when Hannah rejects his kindness, Zach, number seven on Hannah's list, steals Hannah's notes of encouragement from her Peer Communications class. His voice is calm and low.
-Sincere-This isn't about Marcus. I never got the chance to say something. The thing is... you were the Valentine I was hoping for.
He has a short temper and a middle/low voice. Alex is a new kid, just like Hannah. In fact, he's one of the first people in town that Hannah hangs out with. He's on her list because he put her on a list, as the "Best Ass in the Freshman Class" (4.8).

Cheerleader Sheri Holland is number ten on the list. After an awful night at the ill-fated party, she appears to Hannah like an angel offering her a ride home. She is confident, peppy, excitable but also has a deep secret and crumbles. She has a medium/high voice.
