20s-30s. An explorer and painter, charming, polite and adventurous. Arnold is from the real world (America to be precise), and so shouldn't sound fairytale-like in his delivery. He has a fiancée (who is very "down to earth" and wants him to give up painting) but is fascinated by Gertrude and her strange village, so different from our modern world of technology, efficiency, and practicality, and so appealing to his artistic soul. Neutral North American accent preferred.
[smitten] He would be foolish to give his word to someone as beautiful as you and then go back on it. He’d have to have a heart of stone [catches himself], which I’m sure he doesn’t.
[Speaking of his mother]
Her memory is failing her. Some days, she knows who I am. Others, I am my father, or a salesman she once bought a car from back in 1970-something.
But it’s alright. I like that she at least has someone there with her, even if it isn’t me.
She, my fiancee, Elyssa, she’s been trying to get me to move past this desire I have to be a painter. She’s not wrong, of course. She wants to start a family, eventually. I need to be able to support them, and I can’t do that if I can’t sell my paintings. But…
