Before the Chernobog incident, Zima was a middle school student. In school, she showed an enthusiasm for fighting and violence. Multiple tests have shown she has the strength and solid constitution innate for most members of the Ursus race. Currently, she is a captain of the Vanguard Operator squad.

An Ursus student from the Peterheim Middle School in Chernobog, Sonya was trapped with other students during the Chernobog uprising and are responsible for an "accident" which results in a conflict between the school's commoner and aristocrat students over the little remaining supply of food. It was during this time that Sonya was forced to kill (or at least, ordered the deaths of) "unruly" students to keep the rest in line until she managed to escape from the chaos alongside Anna Morozova, Natalya Rostova, Rada and Rosalind, and seeks shelter with Rhodes Island as the de facto leader of the so-called Ursus Student Self-Government Group, codenamed "Zima", and make use of her fighting skills against the Reunion who had destroyed her hometown by leading the charge with her hand axe, giving her the moniker "General Zima".The experience of having to kill other students, however, causes Zima to suffer from a severe PTSD where she is constantly having nightmares of those who had died by her hands and being confronted by her own conscience regarding her actions.
