Metpl is both the cousin and half-brother of Coal. He deeply wants to connect with his brother, though is always rejected. Metol can be rather two-faced, though it has a lot to do with how his mother raised him. He tends to be rather chipper. He's also rather ignorant at to the Pallen's family history up until the end of the book.
“Coal! You have come home to me, my love!”
“I just want to do with you what brothers do. Our mothers may have been half-sisters, but they still grew up together, so why couldn’t we?”
(Still in a happy tone) “Thank the Gods, she’s gone. I don’t like her.”
(narration) “I couldn’t help but raise my voice. I was hurt. Truly, I was deeply wounded. My older brother avoided me all of his life because of his mother, so I was OK with it because I imagined Furvus would do something terrible to him, but now he’s telling me that he betrayed her for some girl that I am pretty sure he hardly knew. Coal looked at me in his slightly alarmed way.”
(upset) “Really?! You did that for her of all people?!”
(remorseful) “Hardly. I don’t know if you realized, but we were practically strangers.”
