the Hatchetman

the Hatchetman

Project Overview

Nick the Hatchetman is a local legend in the northern California town of Pemberton. He leaves a hatchet embedded in a tree trunk, when someone takes his hatchet he hunts them down and chops them up. This is a horror story.

There is overlap with Nick the Hatchetman in some other animations I have planned.

The tiny town only has tourism from hikers for the beautiful wilderness surrounding the town, mostly redwood forest. The short follows a couple Jen and Ryan who arrive in town looking to hike to the hidden waterfalls of Seraph Fountain Falls. When they try to enter the general store of the town they're stopped by an old man who tries to spook them with a warning. A warning against touching any hatchets. They try to ignore him. In the store they buy a local topographical map, and the clerk ominously warns them about "the Hatchetman" in the area they inquired about. They start their hike despite the warnings. After several hours they realize the map is outdated and they should backtrack to a recognizable area. Before turning around Ryan spots a hut/shack sort of dwelling embedded in the side of a hill. Throwing caution to the wind they explore it. Inside a wolf bites onto Ryan's arm, Jen grabs a hatchet that was stuck into a nearby pillar, and hacks the wolf to death, a second wolf attacks and is likewise dispatched. As she tends to Ryan's wounds a large man enters the cabin calling for his pets...

This is a stand alone animation, depending on how long it takes I may make sequels.

Latest Updates

  • Forgot about the extras.

There are a couple kids that run out of the store as Ryan opens the door. I added them to the role call.
  • Great voices

There are so many talented people with amazing voices here. Making it hard to decide on the best fit for the roles. I appreciate the effort put forth by all of you. This is going to make "the Hatchetman" that much better as a final product.
  • Setting

I forgot to mention this takes place in the 1970's, hard copy maps and no widespread cell phones. That's also why the sheriff has the line about how the big city just got a fancy new thermal camera. Pemberton (the small town this takes place in) is in a rural area of the redwood forest.

Jen is adventurous and upbeat. A bit to reckless with her eagerness to explore. After the event she is driven for revenge.

  • [The old man has repeated his warnings of "if you see a hatchet stuck in a tree,  don't touch the hatchet" multiple times. He starts again with "don't touch-" but gets cut off by Jen] the hatchet,  we got it.

[dismissive, sarcastic. trails off at the end as they enter the store, try to say it quickly like she's keeping the old man from saying anything else]  'kay bye crazy old man.

  • [explaining away the crazy old man and clerk's warnings] This is a thing they do to mess with outsiders, and when they spook someone it ends up in the tabloids, and there's some increased tourism for a while from the sensationalism of it all.

  • [whispered to self, building determination, this is in the hospital after Nick killed Ryan and took out one of Jen's eyes and cut off one of her hands] I need a gun and justice, I plan on getting both.

City boy, unsure about this hiking thing. Not eager but willing to explore. Easily swayed by Jen to take on things outside his comfort zone.

  • [a sarcastic response to Jen's excitement about going all the way to the waterfalls. Should read as if he were sarcastically and faux-cheerfully saying, "oh yeah, it'll be a breeze"] And only a twelve mile hike?

  • [referring to the warnings, if you need context read the overview. Emphasis on "that's" he points at that moment] You don't think that's odd?

  • [frantic yelling as a wolf bites a hold on his arm. As if he were to say "it is not a dog"] Not a dog! Not a dog!

    [also general screams of pain]

[also if you can try a scream as if you're being skinned alive,  spoiler alert, Ryan gets skinned alive by the Hatchetman]

A typical small town sheriff. No specific accent needed, maybe Southern.

  • You were found trying to get into your car by some other hiking enthusiasts that were at the trail-head. Do you think you could show us on a map where this shack was?

  • Well, the Pine Ridge police have a fancy new thermal camera on their chopper. If he has a fire, we'll find him... Ahem. We may have more questions, we'll let you rest. Deputy Duggan, here, will be right outside for security.

The store clerk at the Musk General Store in Pemberton, CA. He adds some credibility to the warnings of the crazy old man outside his store.

  • [when asked if they know about a specific waterfall, holding back ominous warning of the Hatchetman] Yes, though not many going out that way recently.

  • [when asked why people don't go there, very dire] Nick the Hatchetman.

  • [cheerful/upbeat] That'll be seven fifty.

This is a kid that runs out of the store, a reference/easter egg to a larger project I'm doing later. Has to sound very young 8-10 years old. He keeps his soda in his pocket, so he refers to it as "pocket pop"

  • Hold up Frank, I'm trying to tuck away my pocket pop.
